This week was a fun one. I made it out to the Sunset Sessions showcase on Friday and sampled some new bands as well as enjoyed some familiar faces. I saw Augustana for the first time in almost 10 years! It was new and familiar all at the same time. In addition to some show fun, I was lucky enough to be a part of an epic shoot yesterday with Beware of Darkness, The Joelsons, Vessel Drums, and some of the Rowlbertos crew and some other amazing peeps at Big Fish Recording. The Olympics are ending. The two weeks had their share of triumphs and disappointments, but I’m going to miss watching Curling while eating breakfast, getting incomprehensibly invested in any kind of biathlon or cross-country event, and of course, everything figure skating/ice dancing, especially if it involved my new favorite duo of Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski.

Next up, Oscars week! I still am woefully behind on the nominated films, but I did manage to catch the animated and live action shorts this weekend, so I’m ready with my picks there.

This is a four piece originally from Sydney but they are now based in Europe. They have had their music featured in the multi-million selling FIFA 12 video game on EA Games, ABC’s Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution (Theme Song), The Bachelorette Wedding (commercial), The CW’s Gossip Girl and Reign, MTV’s The Hills, The Inbetweeners, Jersey shore, The Real World, The Challenge and many more.

Stone Cold Fox- January

This song by an Indie Rock band from Brooklyn, New York made it’s premiere earlier today on Huffington Post. The band is comprised of members from all over the US and are releasing their debut LP Memory Palace on May 6th. FILTER described the band as one that “blends a youthful and energetic sense of comfort through beautiful songs and simple aesthetics.”

This NYC based trio have a new EP out aptly name Chunk of Change. This EP follows up their self-titled debut album from November 2012. Their new EP will be out April 8th.

This week is kind of exciting for us in San Diego because the Sunset Sessions rolls into town. Last year, I had a blast discovering some new bands and watching old favorite. Two of the three nights are completely sold out (I wouldn’t mind seeing NEEDTOBREATHE. Just sayin’) which is pretty stupendous. The rest of the week is kind of light but there’s a lot happing on Thursday. I wouldn’t mind seeing Sir Sly play again at the Hard Rock Hotel’s 207 Club. Fancy. This weekend has been full of excitement. Friday night’s Biffy Clyro show got a bit intense, but it was worth it to see my rocking Scots finally back in LA. I’ve also got a bit of Olympics fever. I’ve watched a little of everything, but that shoot-out from the Russia vs. US hockey game was probably the most thrilling. On top of all that, there are a couple of small dogs running around the apartment, providing an excellent excuse for long walks and rolling around on the floor.

I don’t have so much a show pick this week as I do a venue pick. The Hotel Cafe any night next week will hold at least one act that I absolutely adore. What do I have to do to get a week-long venue pass?

Last week was a pretty mellow one for me. It involved the usual chores, 3 rental movies, some Will and Grace, a dash of Murder, She Wrote, and a sampling of the Sochi Winter Olympics. That might change this week with some of the shows in store. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/10-2/16

Last night’s Queen Caveat EP release event was nothing short of epic. I haven’t been to as many shows this year, but somehow I’ve managed to see a fair number of my favorite bands including Queen Caveat, The Silent Comedy, Moon Taxi, Imagine Dragons, Dear Boy, Truth & Salvage Co. (if you count their Tuesday evening online gatherings) and Irontom. Speaking of favorites, this week’s schedule really packs them in. My show list reads a bit like a list of my top artists of 2013.  We’ve got Irish brothers Hudson Taylor (lead off track of my 2013 mix), my dream combo of Irontom and Meg Myers, Augustines (their new album is worth the wait), Sir Sly, and Biffy Clyro (!!!) making their first LA appearance in over a year.  Too many options, really.
