The Delaware Mind Grape Conspiracy Theory

Obviously this blog is called Local Music Nation, so my first thought when the lovely Miss Amanda Bard asked me to guest as a writer was to write about local music. With the global takeover of the World Wide Web, the universe has shrunk to fit into an icon on our desktop. You can touch a few keys and have information from pretty much anywhere come flying through the digital expanse of space and time to your phone, laptop, mac or preferred electronic device. Do we even understand how crazy awesome this is? This is straight up magical. We could impress Gandalf and Dumbledore with this kind of wizardry. In order to listen to new music from deepest darkest Delaware or Denmark, all we have to do is log on to a search engine and start looking. We have signals that travel up to space, ping some satellite floating around up there and bounce the signal back down to us so that we don’t have to wait even a few seconds to hear a brand new song by a brand new band. This is a miracle in the holiest sense of science and technology and it happens millions of times a day. However, this is the opposite of local music because, while sit immersed in our overwhelming vast online catalog of endless possibilities, down the street there is a great local band busting its balls on stage trying to stir up some kind of following. Although I wouldn’t discourage following some band from Delaware, as a culture we should open up our ears to what is being home grown, like going to the farmer’s market for your tomatoes.

Local music allows you to connect to your community. I would have never met Amanda or Kristen if it weren’t for a mutual love of a local band. In fact, most of my good friends are friends because of our interaction at a local show. Just like buying that tomato from your local farmer, buying tickets and drinks from your local music venue stimulates your local economy. Instead of paying three hundred dollars for Coachella, (where you will become a sunburned, sweaty, dirty, smelly mess) spend that money on tickets for thirty different local shows and make new friends and become a local legend. It’s always exciting when an out of town band rolls through town and you get to catch a live show that you may only get to see every once in a blue moon. Local bands play more at home. This means more shows, more happiness, more dancing, more fun, and overall a longer life expectancy. Okay, I may be lying about the life expectancy thing, but it means better quality of life for sure. This past January I was able to see one of my favorite bands live five times. This is amazing.

It’s really okay to leave your house. I promise, the world is scary, but it’s exciting and in full resolution all the time. Your DVR will record The Walking Dead and if it doesn’t then you can watch it online or on demand or streaming or pirated or something new that they invented in the last thirty seconds. When time passes in real life, it doesn’t repeat itself. Go out and experience it. You will never be lovelier than you are now. Listen to music as it’s being played, be connected to a song in a way that doesn’t exist outside of live performance. Shout, “I AM ALRIGHT!” over and over again with two hundred other people and be part of something real and tangible. Then eat a California burrito at 4 a.m., cause that’s being alive. Take a chance, venture out your front door and you may find something worth your while. Plus the internet is stealing our mind grapes.

New Music Tuesday 1/31 Featuring Adam Arcuragi and Carsie Blanton

Another great day for music releases. There are several new records I’m interested in checking out, but I’m going to put the spotlight on two amazing artists based in Philadelphia that have new music out today. Adam Arcuragi and Carsie Blanton are both part of the folk/coffeehouse scene in Philly. I have enjoyed both artists for many years and am most excited to hear what they have been up to lately.

Adam’s deep, soothing and soulful voice is mesmerizing. I’m writing this as I stream his new album, Like a Fire That Consumes All Before It from NPR and I find it casting a spell on me. The songs seem to maintain a folk/indie sensibility but with a quiet beauty that reminds me of a Ryan Adams song. I can’t wait to delve deeper into the record!

Carsie Blanton is the epitome of sweet. I love her folksy songs and candy-coated voice.  She could be singing the most depressing tune, but you still couldn’t help but smile at the inflections in her voice. From what I’ve heard of Idiot Heart it sounds like another charmer. You can download the new CD here. http://carsieblanton.bandcamp.com/album/idiot-heart

I was unable to find a video for a song from her new album (which you can stream from her website), but here’s a fun song off her album, Buoy.

Here are a few more I’d recommend looking into:

New Music Tuesday 1/24 Featuring Ingrid Michaelson, Foxy Shazam, Graffiti6, etc.

I know it’s been awhile since I was able to do one of these, but there are so many wonderful CDs coming out today and I felt it necessary to invest some time into pointing them out. I hope you, in turn, will invest some time into listening! Click on the artist’s name for more info on them and how to get their new CD.

Human AgainIngrid Michaelson

I first heard this CD about a month ago and I have been counting down the days for its release. I’m a huge fan of Ingrid Michaelson and she takes this record to darker places both musically and lyrically and I love it! My full review of the album will be printed in the winter issue of High Voltage Magazine, but suffice it to say, fan or not, I think you should check out this record.

The Church of Rock and RollFoxy Shazam

When I first heard this group (sight unseen) I thought they were being led by a powerful black woman. Imagine my surprise when I found out their lead singer was a diminutive white guy. The surprises are never ending with Foxy Shazam and their newest record, The Church of Rock and Roll, definitely pushes the boundaries of what is expected from a rock band from Ohio. Check them out if you want something refreshing for your ears. And when they come to your town, do NOT miss the opportunity to see them live.

ColoursGraffiti6

I had the pleasure of discovering these Brits at The El Rey last week when they opened for Augustana. They play the kind of music that makes it easy to smile and sway along. I got the CD that night and have been listening to it on repeat. My favorite song is “Free”. I hope it can make you smile as well…

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/23-1/29

Last week was a phenomenal week of shows. I believe I was out every night save the weekend (I much prefer staying in on the weekends anyway). My weekend was also fairly “epic” but in another sense. I made my third batch of 2011 mix CDs while watching the third Lord of the Rings movie (Return of The King) and I started re-reading the third book in the Inheritance cycle. I rather enjoy retreating into worlds full of elves and dragons where epic battles are won and heroes come from the unlikeliest of sources. And as I listen to Annie Lennox sing “Into the West” I am disheartened at the thought of returning to my somewhat less glorious real life.

Life does have a few treats in store for me this week, however. Bonnaroo highlight (and ’11 mix artist) Cory Chisel will be in town Tuesday night at The Echo, San Diego faves, Endoxi, will be rockin’ The Roxy Thursday, and LA love Queen Caveat is back in action with their first show of the new year Friday night at The Viper Room.
