Local Music Nation

I thought I had lucked into tickets to see Beck and Phoenix last week until I found out that they couldn’t give tickets away to that show because people didn’t want to brave the prophesized traffic nightmare caused by the Taylor Swift concert taking place next door. Turns out, traffic wasn’t bad at all (when you arrived early and parked a mile away), the show was quite fun (highlighted by Phoenix dancing around to tunes from my favorite of their albums, Alphabetical), and watching the Taylor Swift sparkle parade navigating the streets of Inglewood was valid pre-show entertainment.

Coming up, we’ve got some great singer-songwriters including Annabel Lee for Beck Pete’s residency, Hayley Warner and more singing at Jesse & Friends, and Tegan & Sara at the Bellweather Monday night.

It’s been a week full of outdoor shows cementing some strong summertime vibes (as if the heat wasn’t indicator enough). This weekend was a dance party featuring Almost Monday and Weathers followed by what may be the first in a series of shows thrown by American Authors at Frogtown Brewery. The inaugural event featuring American Authors themselves along with Young Rising Sons and Tillie!

I’ve been driving around listening to Andrew McMahon full blast on the stereo, inspired by another riveting performance at the Sad Summer Festival where he surfed the audience on an inflatable llama, brought out the “Synesthesia” parachute, and featured his daughter Cecilia on her eponymous hit.  Although Andrew’s newest album, Tilt At The Wind No More, might be one of my favorites from his catalogue, the set highlight for me was Something Corporate oldie, “Hurricane”. Those SC songs will always strike an emotional chord.  

We’ve got some special shows next week including two nights of Local Natives at the Ford, a Candlelight concert from LeAnn Rimes, the return of Ernie Halter to the Hotel Cafe and a free show featuring American Authors and Young Rising Sons at Frogtown Brewery.

I just got back from San Diego Comic Con. With many major studios pulling out and almost no actors to interview, it was a very different Con experience from my norm, but I’m happy to report that the passion and excitement that motivates most Con goers was still very present and it gave me the sense that the event will be thriving for many years to come.
