I might need a few days to recover from seeing alllll the bands at the When We Were Young Festival in Las Vegas over the weekend. Celebrating emo music from 15-20 years ago means mostly male-fronted bands, but the festival did a service to all by including some more contemporary female-fronted rock bands, a couple of which play LA this week (Nessa Barrett, PVRIS). Next week we also have the big Dear Boy album release and Joe P (formally of Deal Casino) opening for Australia’s Spacey Jane.

The biggest highlight and disappointment of my week is that I will be headed to Vegas for the When We Were Young Fest by way of LA to see You Me At Six. It’s a highlight because… well, have you seen the lineup? I’ll be mentally back in 2010, reliving my peak emo days. It’s a disappointment because it means missing The Silent Comedy’s last show of the year at the Belly Up with Little Hurricane. If I could teleport or split myself in half, this is one of those instances where I would do it. Alas, we are not there yet. If you’re not at the fest, I highly recommend that show as well as these others…

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/10-10/16

Aside from a couple sold out shows from Dermot Kennedy and Bear’s Den, it felt like last week was full of lightly attended concerts. Was it the LA gloom? I don’t generally mind a light crowd, but fewer people can lead to draftier venues so next week I will wear more layers, particularly at The Echo and The Venice West (these venues really pump the AC!). Speaking of The Venice West, Ivan & Alyosha make a long-awaited return to LA at that venue next week bringing one of my newer faves Evan Bartels to open. Also in the long-anticipated return category we have Jim and Sam, Joe Pug, and My Chemical Romance whose reunion tour hits the LA leg.

It’ll be a week of tough choices, but here’s what I’m thinking:

Yours truly took a jaunt up to La La Land to see Michelle Branch and got transported back to the early 2000s. It was a lovely and super fun time at the Troubadour! I’m still wearing my wristband from that evening. The following night was spent watching Eliza & the Delusionals open for the Silversun Pickups at the Observatory in North Park. A super fun way to kick off Rocktober! Lots of great stuff going on this week and not a bad day to choose from. Have fun!
