Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/20-12/26

This year has been bereft of the usual holiday soirees, but I did go to the Music with Friends show at the Hotel Cafe which featured some powerhouse vocalists who did bust out a festive tune or two. I also managed to attend the Jessie J show earlier in the week which was an experience special enough that I can attribute it to the Holidays.  Today, The Milk Carton Kids Livestream had me smiling. They ended with a uniquely Milk Carton Kids rendition of “O Holy Night”, one of my favorite Christmas songs.

I have a feeling there will be an increase in livestreams for the rest of the year and beyond as we deal with another wave of this pandemic.  Hopefully, it won’t take as long to figure out how we can safely return to our shows.  In the meantime, here’s what we’ve got:

My body feels a bit broken from all the walking I did last week on my “winter break”. A trip to Chicago did involve a few stray snowflakes, ice skating, and plenty of Christmas lights, but mostly I was there for some music including an intimate warehouse set from Morgxn, 2021 faves Cleopatrick, Badflower playing songs of their Temper EP (the best!), my first time seeing the incredible Evanescence, and a special holiday show staring Sarah Brightman.

This week, I will be particularly grateful for my car and sitting in traffic to get to shows instead of walking miles and miles after busses and trains decide not to work properly. As per usual I’ve been stuck at home. I’ve re-watched the Harry Potter movies a few times and am binging Friends and catching up on my usual tv programming. I wish I was able to go out and do more but I’m only two weeks out of surgery and my stamina is still pretty shite. The thing I’m most bummed about missing out on is seeing Kimmi Bitter at Northern Pine on the 17th. At least this is the time of year when things are winding down. If I was stuck on my butt in the midst of festival season or Rocktober, I would be a sad panda.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I spent most of my long weekend recovering from my covid booster, but I also managed to score an excess amount of pie (apparently pie sales were low this year), go for a hike, and help the police pursue a criminal because, for some reason, the guy decided to stop his thieving to talk to me about his bookclub.

What I am most thankful for are the live shows, which feel more precious this year than ever, especially as shows and tours continue to be cancelled (notice the absence of The Hunna on this week’s schedule).

The big excitement next week is the return of one of the best showcases for music discovery, It’s a School Night, to its home at Bardot in Hollywood. This week the showcase features a couple of my favorite up and coming artists, Windser and John-Robert.

Amanda’s weird back pain turned herniated disc has evolved into a hospital stay and last-minute surgery, so she’s asked me to post for her this week. This is all good news, really as it means Amanda will be back up and walking (and then show-going) sooner than originally anticipated.
