Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/4-11/10

This week has been weird and emotional, but it got off to a fabulous start Monday night at The Regent Theater downtown with Frank Turner hosting a rare, seated storyteller event. There were two sets; the second, with The Sleeping Souls accompaniment, traversed romantic entanglements via deeper cuts in previous albums and the opening solo set focused on select songs from the newest album, No Man’s Land. I had listened to the album and enjoyed the folk tales of previously unsung heroes, but what really struck me at the show was Frank’s enthusiastic intros to each of the songs. It hit me by the end of that set that although each of the song’s subjects were women (hence the album title), Frank never once pointed that out, instead claiming them all to be about important “people” throughout history.  Be still my little feminist heart! The evening ended, in more typical fashion, with a dance party singalong reminding us all about the importance of rock and roll (a very fitting conclusion to a successful Rocktober) Thanks, Frank Turner!

Next week we have some new November residencies, a BBMAK blast from my past, and Buzzbands.LA celebrating 11 years of supporing the local music scene Saturday night at The Hi Hat.

Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 10/28-11/3

Last week involved a step forward in my drumming, being on high alert for fires, and shaving a horse. Nothing musical got me out of the house. Despite being tempted to venture out, I couldn’t muster the energy. Maybe this week will be different but right now, my body is in recovery mode. Also, I’m in the midst of an argument with some external hard drives. One doesn’t want to copy all the info over and keeps getting stuck at “5 seconds remaining.” Send help!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/28-11/3

Highly Suspect and Hozier may not appear to have much in common, but last week I saw them both and noticed an interesting similarity; at both shows my heart rate plummeted while the artist was performing (thanks, Fitbit!).  Fun to note that my heart rate in a loud, crowded theater is lower than when sitting at my desk at work…  Conclusion: live music is medicine and I’ll be needing more of that, please!

Next week, we have the always cathartic Frank Turner in town at The Regent Theater Monday night. It’s also Halloween and while I usually try to avoid shows around Halloween, KidEyes is teaming up with Black Crystal Wolf Kids for a Halloween Spooktacular Thursday night that cannot be missed.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/21-10/27

New Band Love alert! I went to The Echo Saturday to check out an Australian band whose EP had landed in my inbox and subsequently into my songs of 2019 playlist.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was not the entire main floor of the venue turned into some sort of mosh pit. I found an enviable perch in the back and, once able to breathe, quickly fell in love with the dynamic energy and rock chords of The Faim (I think it was the keys…I’m a sucker for piano in a rock song).
