I hope you all have a great Christmas! I’m not really looking forward to three days of no live music, but I certainly have enough to do to fill the time. If you are on my mailing list, expect a little present later today or tomorrow!!

Speaking of gifts, if you’d like to do something for me, might I suggest helping out some worthy musicians, Danish indie synth-pop trio terminal, in their Pledge Music Campaign. terminal and their music came into my life last fall when I was going through some difficult times and listening to them really helped get me through. I’ve become a big fan and would love to see them succeed in their goal of raising funds to record some music. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/8-10/14

I’m nearly done with the Culture Collide madness that has consumed the last several days. Today’s block party marks the end of this glorious event which, I must say, is the most fun I’ve had at a festival since SXSW…I think it’s the people. Everyone I’ve met and chatted with has been lovely and the vibe is friendly and music-centric. The festival also gives me a chance to see international acts I might not be exposed to otherwise. My favorites thus far have been the Danish band, terminal, Toronto’s The Balconies, Ewert and The Two Dragons from Estonia, and Scotland’s Admiral Fallow who is, I believe, the first band I’ve encountered that uses my favorite instrument, the clarinet, in their live performance.

Moving on to next week, here is my list of shows I’d love to attend. Top picks would have to go to Canada’s Reignwolf (Jordan Cook) who plays two shows this week and Leogun from London who plays a free show Wednesday at The Satellite. One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite LA bands and while it isn’t ‘sexy’ in terms of being a song about sex, it feels sexy to me. Maybe it’s the guitar. Maybe it’s about someone sinister. It might just be the lyric, ‘he’ll help you take off your dress, insist there’s more to confess.’ Is that a promise?

This weekend just seemed to slip through my fingertips. I swear I spent most of it in front of my computer working, but I certainly don’t have anything to show for it. I did manage to get out Friday night for a little Culture Collide (such a great festival!). Then Saturday night was an evening at The Hotel Cafe where I was taken on a journey back to 2004 with Michael Tolcher. Hearing Michael play some of my favorite tunes from that year made me realize just how connected certain songs are to particular years of my life…and that 2004 may very well be my happiest year. I’m not sure if that year’s greatness was more because of the music or because of the events that the music accompanied, but I do know that the bands and songs that I associate with that time will forever be my favorites.

This week brings us Filter Magazine’s Culture Collide Festival. This multi-cultural festival, primarily taking place in Silverlake, combines live music, film screenings and food from around the world. For more information, check out the website (http://culturecollide.com/). Festival tickets can be purchased for $20 and there is a free block party at the end of the week. I’m not overly familiar with many of the bands, but I’m looking forward to discovering some new international artists.
