Biffy Clyro: I am SILL obsessed with this band. Their CD, Only Revolutions, has joined Jealousy Curve, Alright Junior, and MUTEMATH as a permanent staple in my car. The band recently released a new single for their song “Bubbles” along with some additional unreleased tracks. Unfortunately, they will not be accompanying the release with a US tour…I will have to make do with the new video. I love this song. I love this CD. I love this band.

So instead of writing up some grand summary of the events of last weekend (Nico Vega/Metric at The Hollywood Palladium, San Diego Indie Music Fest, Bamboozled), or trying to post some of the 300+ pictures I’ve taken (they’ll come up eventually on facebook), I just wanted to share with you the story of my newest band obsession, After Midnight Project.
These guys were the first band we saw Sunday at Bamboozled…such a great way to start the day! The crowd wasn’t very big so it was easy to get up front and take some pictures. The set was elevating…the band has a great dynamic and the energy on stage was transferrable to the audience (always a good sign). I instantly fell in love with the sound and the songs.
After the set we ventured over to the merch booth and met their lovely merch guy, a fellow Cardinals’ lover (I was sporting a hat showcasing my favorite baseball team). We purchased the band’s CD, Let’s Build Something to Break, and chatted a bit with the band. Turns out they are from LA (YAY!) although they don’t really play local shows (not so yay). So, if you’re in LA and want to catch them, you’ll have to wait ‘til Warped Tour.
Next comes the amusing story. The band announced that they were going to do an acoustic set later in the day…and, as you may know, I’m a big fan of rock bands breaking it down acoustically. When we ventured over to the acoustic venue we weren’t exactly sure how it worked. I just walked in, but Amanda was stopped outside. Turned out, the acoustic set was a VIP only event. With one of us in and one of us out, what were we to do?!?
But, in case you didn’t know, Amanda is awesome. She told me to stay where I was and a set and a half later she appeared at my side…having gotten in with the band. Turns out, After Midnight Project is really great to their fans. When Amanda told them of our predicament, they were more than happy to help out!
And I’m so glad it all worked out because the After Midnight Project acoustic set was definitely the highlight of my day (well, right after seeing Something Corporate again after so many years). They even pulled off the song entitled “Scream For You” which involves screaming from both the band and the audience. After the set, we got to hang out a bit more and meet some of the After Midnight Project family.
Anyway, another band to add to my list! I haven’t stopped listening to their CD since I got it (I’m finally able to take that Biffy Clyro CD out of my car stereo). If you want to see After Midnight Project live (as you should), they are currently touring with Story of the Year so be sure to catch that show if it comes to your area. And if you go to Warped Tour be sure to check them out there. Personally, I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for a local headlining show at The Roxy or something…

So although I’m still a little sad I missed out on The Silent Comedy/Transfer night 1 at The Casbah, I am mostly just glowing over the amazing night I did have. Afterall, it involved half naked Scotsmen, mind altering music, a gift from the heavens, and an American Idol contestant.
I went to The Troubadour to the sold out Manchestra Orchestra show. Due to typical LA traffic, I missed the first band. Thankfully, I got there in time to catch Biffy Clyro . I was initially put off by their appearance-three heavily tattooed men on stage without shirts, but they quickly won me over with their music (and charming accents). At first, I couldn’t decide what type of music they were playing. Some of their songs were slow and melodic…and then they would bust one out so loud and pounding it felt like a metal show. Then I realized what I loved about them was their unpredictability. Even in their beats…they never took them where I expected them to go. I found myself transfixed by the novelty of it all. I immediately purchased their CD, but I have a feeling that what I witnessed transcends the confines of an audio recording.
The second band I saw, The Features , was also a bit of a paradox. Its lead singer looked like a woodsman yet would break out into this hard rock screaming. My favorite part of this band was the drummer whose deft movements on his drum kit gave the distinct impression of floating on air…a joy to watch. Their song, “Lions” sounded like something from a commercial (if not, it should be).
Manchester Orchestra started off with a folksy dedication to 50 Cent…I knew then that it was going to be an amazing set. Manchester Orchestra is one of those bands that really know how to work the lows and the highs of a song. They do this so well that they are somehow able to keep the audience on this perpetual high. I got so lost in the songs that I had no sense of time or space. I started floating back down to reality as they were playing their hit “I’ve Got Friends” and I realized that their set was coming to an end…and that my feet really really hurt…and that somehow in the hour or so that they played I had managed to move a good ten feet or so. Thankfully they had the presence of mind to close with a slow tune; carefully bringing us all back down to Earth.
As I was exiting the venue a piece of paper floated down from the sky above and landed at my feet (very reminiscent of the whole secret Wolfmother show incident). On one side was a large note written in sharpie that said “No More Scotch.” On the other, was the set list for the show I had just witnessed. I felt like it was God sending me a message telling me I was in the exact right place and time…or maybe to lay off the scotch (!?!).
To cap off my excellent evening I ventured to nearby Millions of Milkshakes. Turns out I was in line in front of American Idol contestant, Aaron Kelly and family who were in town for the show. I would never have known this if it weren’t for the two guys standing outside the shop who stopped me as I came out to ask me if, indeed, I was standing next to the reality show contestant. I ended up talking to his family and discovered that some of them are from a town very close to where I grew up! Suddenly I felt oddly compelled to participate in the American Idol voting…I went home and immediately watched this week’s episode.

Happy Labor Day Weekend (whatever that means to you)! I hope you are all able to get out and enjoy the weekend. As for me, I haven’t seen much of the sun in the last couple of days. I’m trying to get some work done in order to clear my schedule for important events happening over the next few weeks. Fortunately, my writing companion is Biffy Clyro’s Revolutions: Live at Wembley DVD which helps keep me focused…sometimes.
I did see the blue moon Friday night and I celebrated by going to The Hotel Cafe see one of my favorite bands, Truth & Salvage Co. play a secret show under their former name, The Denim Family Band. This filled me with nostalgia as it was the year I moved to LA that I discovered this band and saw them at The Hotel Cafe numerous times. Ah, memories…

Hope everyone’s gearing up for the holidays…after the Hotel Cafe Christmas party I attended on Friday, I’m finally starting to feel the spirit of the season. Unfortunately I am WAY behind with all the practicals (preparing for holiday travel, gift manufacturing, etc.). Doesn’t help that my new computer is just not up to snuff (I need a tech savvy robot for these things).
Usually I venture to Philadelphia for the Christmas season. There is a fantastic show that takes place on the 26th each year supported by local radio station, WMMR. This year the Mistletoe Jam features IKE, SINAI, The Shakers, Venice Sunlight, and Anthony Renzulli Band. I wish I could be there. But instead of spending the holidays with my musical family in Philly, I am opting to see my actual family in Missouri (to the grandparent’s house I go!). Have yet to look into concerting options in the Show Me State, so if anyone reading this happens to know of any good venues or local bands in the St. Louis region, let me know!
Unlike Philly, where over the holidays everyone is in town and local bands shows are plentiful, LA seems to disappear and shows become scarce. Still, here’s what I found:
