Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 7/16-7/22

I feel like I missed out on a lot this weekend. Mostly, everything Comic-Con related: The Firefly reunion, the Lost Girl and Supernatural panels, all those new TV pilots, The Questionable Content guy, the Aushole gathering…I’m still a bit sour about the whole thing. It was also my 10 year high school reunion this weekend, but honestly, that would have probably been more awkward and uncomfortable than being immersed in a sea of costume-wearing Trekkies speaking in Klingon.  I did, however, get two references to Engelbert Humperdinck two days in a row, so…that’s exciting.

Moving forward, we have another great week for music ahead of us! If you haven’t made it out to Terraplane Sun’s Monday night residency at The Satellite, this would be a great week to do so. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 7/9-7/15

I’ve been doing a lot of writing this weekend. I can’t write without listening to music, so I’ve been doing a lot of that as well. After seeing Joe Firstman Friday at WitZend play one of the best shows I’ve seen in a while (from anyone), I’ve got his entire catalog on repeat. I’m also mixing in The Young Roman’s Tiger Child and the live EP Twin Atlantic gave out last week which has a particularly compelling acoustic version of “Make A Beast Of Myself”. Finally, last night, while at The Satellite to see Queen Caveat, I discovered a new band from Portland called Rags & Ribbons so I’m absorbing and slightly obsessing over their album The Glass Masses.

Soon, however, I’ll have to switch over to The Silent Comedy to pump myself up for their show tonight at The Echoplex. I can’t imagine a better way to end the weekend than a TSC dance-party.

Next week starts off strong with a show from Tony Lucca at Room 5. We’ll see how much Tony’s popularity has increased since his showing on The Voice. My other pick of the week might have to be Saint Motel’s record release at The El Rey on Saturday. I’m so proud of these LA locals, rising in popularity to headlining status at The El Rey! There are also several great shows at The Hotel Cafe this week including one by LMN Band Love Tournament of Hearts.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 6/24-7/1

Currently listening to all the bands on the Warped Tour line-up…trying to decide if I want to go to Ventura’s date. I’m leaning towards yes, mostly because I want to see Dead Sara, but sadly I feel there are more bands on my “to avoid” list than my “to check out” list (yes, I have made lists). Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/30-5/6

This week has been all about paper reading/writing…not a lot of music listening…although there has been some Veronica Mars watching and that show has an excellent soundtrack. Also, I did make it out to The Wiltern Friday night for Ingrid Michaelson. I am a big fan of her latest album, Human Again and, as I anticipated, the new songs translated quite well to an exciting live show. Plus, LMN faves Harper Blynn opened and they are always a treat.

New Music Tuesday Featuring Harper Blynn, Butterfly Boucher, Neon Trees, and William Beckett

Another Tuesday, more great new music for your ears. Here’s what we recommend:

Harper BlynnBusy Hands

Harper Blynn is a NYC-based band, but they have been spending a lot of time in LA this year…probably working on this record. Basically taking up residence at The Hotel Cafe, I had the pleasure of seeing the band play quite a few times. In addition, they played one of my top SXSW 2012 sets.  This LMN Band Love is offering their new CD, Busy Hands, for free on their website so no excuse really. Go get it!

Butterfly BoucherButterfly Boucher

One of my favorite Ten out of Tenn artists, Australian native, Butterfly Boucher has been on my playlist since I first heard her song “Life is Short” off her debut album Flutterby (2003). She did a show recently in LA at Room 5 and I got to hear some of the new songs off her newest, self-titled album. I’m sold!

Get the album here.

Neon TreesPicture Show

Neon Trees is my newest addiction and I’m so happy to have a follow up to their debut album Habits (2010). According to singer Tyler Glenn, Picture Show was written “as if it were a soundtrack” and encourages people to “listen this album as a piece or choose the songs that fit your moment.” It’s available on Amazon for only $7.99 to boot!

William Beckett– Walk The Talk EP

A new day has dawned for singer of now defunct band The Academy Is… William Beckett. He is newly liberated and flowing with musical juices (so he says). Today marks the release of his first of three eps. If you want to catch up with Mr. Beckett, you can catch him on Stage It or on tour. The ep is just $4 and available from Amazon in mp3 form or in a physical form here.

Also coming out today:

  • Jason Mraz – Love is a Four Letter Wordi
  • Dar Williams – In the Time of Gods
  • Our Lady Peace – Curve
  • Eric Hutchinson – Moving Up Living Down

Kristen’s ’11 Mix – Track 9 – Ben Rector

9. “When A Heart Breaks” – Ben Rector

LMN spent some time in Nashville this year exploring a bit of the local music scene. I realized that I’ve been listening to quite a few Nashville-based artists. Butterfly Boucher, Matthew Perryman Jones, Gabe Dixon (and all the Ten of Tenn-ers), Neal Carpenter, Bonnie Bishop, Matt Wertz, etc. It was hard to select just one for this mix, but the one who had the greatest impact on me this year was probably Ben Rector.  I first heard of Ben a couple of years ago but this year was the first opportunity I had to see him, first opening for Matt Wertz at The Troubadour and later at The Hotel Cafe as part of my epic 4 venue/7band evening.  Ben Rector had a new album come out this year called Something Like This, which I quite enjoy, but I’m still hung up on Into The Morning which features “When a Heart Breaks”
