Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 8/5-8/11

And once again it’s Sunday night. It doesn’t feel like I’ve
had much of a weekend as I spent most of it sitting in front of my computer,
working. I watched three movies today: The
Bumblebee Flies Away
, Girl
Interrupted
, and Der Krieger und die Kaiserin (The Princess and The Warrior). All of them largely take place in
some sort of hospital or mental institution. I found myself envious of the patients
which I suppose tells you something of my current mental state.  Hopefully next week won’t be so overwhelming
and I will be able to get to some shows (my much needed respite in this storm
of life).

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 7/23-7/28

Posted on by .

Made a somewhat last minute decision to go down to Comic Con
for a couple days. This ended up being a fantastic call. After a whirlwind 2.5
days (1 day longer than planned), I realized that Comic Con was very much like
SXSW (my favorite week of the year). There were fun panels, celebrity run-ins,
lots of giveaways and exclusives, free food, long lines, no sleep, extreme
scheduling crises, and yes, even music. On that front, we saw New Politics
Thursday night at an MTV2 party with the cast of Teen Wolf, Animals of Kin
played The Griffin on Friday and the How I Met Your Mother
panel on Saturday involved a surprising amount of singing.

Speaking of SXSW, a couple of my favorites from this year
are in town this week. Kid Karate playing a free show at Bardot on Monday and
Bastille is at The Troubadour Tuesday. We also have The 1975, Frightened
Rabbit, and Shakey Graves (more band recommendations from Austin) playing LA

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/22-4/28

Posted on by .

It’s been a busy week of deadlines. I didn’t really get out much and when this happens I can go a bit crazy. I might do stupid things like buy expensive concert tickets just to see a 20min set from the opening band (The Neighbourhood on Tuesday were amazing). I also might do things like go from a brilliant acoustic Young Guns set to see The Backstreet Boys just to avoid staring at the computer screen for a day.

And now it’s Sunday and despite working until 2am on Friday night, I’m so behind with what I needed to do this weekend. Hopefully things won’t leak over too much into next week as I’d really like to start going to shows again. Watching some season 1 Veronica Mars in honor of the super successful Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the VM movie. I’m excited (and yes, I pledged). I’ve seen these episodes so many times, it’s the perfect background for getting some work done.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/18-2/24

When I’m sick, I try to do the “right thing” and not go out at night. It’s hard. Then, when I can’t get my music fix live, I reach out in other ways. Let’s just say this weekend, I spent way too much money on CDs and concert tickets. The combination of delirium and withdrawal is simply not good for my wallet.

Hopefully this flu will be gone by Monday so we can get this week off to a good start. Monday night, High Voltage Magazine is co-sponsoring the A House For Lions Show at The Echoplex so if you’re planning on checking this band out one of these Mondays (and you should), this would be the Monday I’d suggest. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/5-11/11

Posted on by .

Last week was such a blur. I think this is mostly because I didn’t sleep very much. When you’re only taking 2-4 hr. “naps”, it can get quite difficult to keep track of things like days…and dinner time. My favorite Danes, terminal, left to go back to Denmark on Friday and I already feel the hole in my life. I often come across music that moves me, but for the people behind the music to be equally as touching…that is truly something special and I feel blessed to have had this band in my life the last month. I was very fortunate in that before I could wallow in their absence for too long, a conveniently timed facebook message reminded me that my favorite Aussie-born brothers, The Kin, are coming to town this week. Thursday night they play The Roxy. It feels like I have been waiting years for these guys to come back to play LA and I would strongly encourage you all to come out and see them Thursday night before they disappear again.
