Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/28-1/3

Yesterday I was able to check “go to Big Bear” off my LA bucket list. Actually I was able to check try downhill skiing off my list as well. I was pleasantly surprised at how music-friendly the mountain was. I walked up to the resort to one of my favorite Switchfoot songs, had lunch with some Band of Skulls and Imagine Dragons, and throughout the afternoon heard snippets of live music from the various bands. It was very tempting to give up the snow and skis for a smoothie and some live tunes.

This week, quite frankly, has too many shows I “need” to attend. Honestly, there is at least one thing every night that I’m super pumped about. I am going to have to make some difficult choices, so if anyone has anything to say to sway me in a particular direction, let me know. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/10-12/16

It’s been an interesting week. Mostly because I haven’t been able to talk now for nearly seven solid days. It really makes you appreciate how valuable one’s voice truly is. This isn’t the first time this has happened. I lost my voice the day my best friend got married and I had to croak out a Maid of Honor speech. I lost my voice in the middle of my teaching a course. Now, I lose my voice when I’ve been given the opportunity to interview the lead singer of my favorite band. You know, I wonder if there is a pattern emerging here…

Anyway, vocal problems aside, I got to see Biffy Clyro last week so life isn’t even remotely close to being bad. I was also treated to KROQ’s Acoustic Xmas last night which meant I got to see some heavy hitters like Garbage, Bush, and Linkin Park as well as personal favorites like Youngblood Hawke, Gaslight Anthem, and The Lumineers. There was also a Gwen Stefani/Gavin Rossdale duet which felt pretty darn special.

Speaking of holiday shindigs, The High Voltage Holiday party is this Tuesday at Silverlake Lounge. We’ve got some great bands, copies of our newest issue, and everyone who comes through the door gets a gift! I’d love to see you all there J

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/26-12/2

As the holiday party invitations start to come in, I’m reminded that it’s time to put my end of year music mix together. For those of you who don’t know, every year I make a mix of all the songs and artists that meant something to me over the year…they are usually accompanied by a story and pictures. I work on this all year round, but the hardest part is pulling it together at the end and finding the time to create and produce the final product (aka Christmas gifts!). For this year’s mix, I had the first “rough draft” done for a couple weeks ago and and I’ve since made a few tweaks, but I’m still not 100% happy with it. However, if my first party is in just a couple of weeks, I’ll need to start manufacturing soon! Or maybe I should just accept the fact that my Christmas gifts will be late…again.

And who knows, maybe there will be a show this month that will change my life and alter the mix entirely (December 6th early show at The Satellite, I’m looking at you!). There are plenty of promising options these week. Here are my picks:

Amanda’s Top Ten Musical Experiences (cont.)

I bet you thought I forgot all about this! Well, the truth of the matter is… I haven’t been home to write and when I am home, I’m sleeping. I’ve been out making new musical experiences for 2012! As such I’m giving you three more of my top musical experiences and I promise the top 2 won’t be far behind.

5.SXSW- I don’t really know how to describe SXSW to anyone other than calling it a musical orgy of sorts. There is so much to see and do whilst in Austin, Texas that it’s hard to keep your head on straight. Last year was my first year and I hope to be going every year after. The cool thing about SXSW is you really only need money for a place to stay and some food. We never went to any official shows (which is what badges are required for) and we had a hard time keeping up with all the musical options out there. During our time at SXSW we saw; Fierce Creatures, Viva City, Purple Melon, AWOLNATION, Neon Trees, The Head and The Heart, The Kin, Dead Sara, Fitz and The Tantrums, Tailor Made Fable, Keaton Simons, Liam Finn, Atomic Tom, Ivan and Alyosha, Queen Caveat, The Gallery, Sabrosa Purr,  The Greenhornes, The Silent Comedy, Mother Mother, Agnes Obel, Brian Wright, Brooke Fraser, Cary Brothers, Holly Conlan, Jim Bianco, Joey Ryan, Kenneth Pattengale, Laura Jansen, Little Red Radio, OK, The Milk Carton Kids, Deluka, Hugo, Meriwether, My Cousin The Emperor, Sinai, Taylor Locke & The Roughs, The Good Natured, Augustana, Doll and The Kicks, Empires, Lenka, Twin Atlantic, and The Stone Foxes. Well, you get the idea…

4. Blink-182- I was never a huge fan of Blink. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t change the radio station when their music came on or anything but nothing about them made me have a burning desire to see them live. In 2011, I saw them not once but twice and they will always have a warm spot in my heart. The first time I saw them was for the Honda Civic Tour. I was working with Kevin and Rebecca Joelson and doing some shooting of the event which means I was in the pit for the first few songs and was able to be side stage for the rest of their set. I was surprised at just how many Blink-182 songs I knew and Rebecca and I sang along from the sidelines. What really blew my brain was when they ‘finished’ their set and this giant rig comes down from the batons where all the lights are. I had been staring at it all night trying to figure out what it was. Well, it was a giant arm with a drum set attached! Travis got on this rig and was taken out over the audience while he played a solo for a few minutes. The rig would tilt down, back up and move around. It was mind blowing!!!! Needless to say, I was a fan after that.

3. Bonnaroo- In 2011, Bonnaroo was what Coachella should have been lineup wise. If you’ve ever been to or know about Coachella, think of Bonnaroo as the cooler sister who is both hippie and hip. Bonnarro is also held in a giant field and while it lacks the artistic attractions like the wandering robot and the giant hand that can kill a car, it has yoga and it’s own post office. Bonnaroo also has this giant fountain which I’ve been told gets painted different colors every year but it’s a great way to stay cool in the heat. Coachella doesn’t have that. Granted Coachella is easier to get to, but flying out gave us the chance to hang out in Tennessee and check out Nashville for a day or two. Our highlights from Bonnaroo were already posted on this site but we had a blast watching Eminem, The Head and The Heart, Portugal. The Man, Neon Trees, Kopeckey Family Band, Mumford and Sons, Cory Chisel and The Wandering Sons, Alberta Cross, The Black Angels, and The Decemberists. Bonnaroo is a new tradition in my book and I can’t wait to see the lineup for 2012!

See you soon for my top 2!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 8/15-8/21

Last week I kind of took it a bit easy. Let’s call it a conservation of energy tactic. Saturday, I went from 0 to 100. I stopped at The Hudson block party where I discovered a great new band (Nightmare & The Cat), did some dancing, ate some food, and witnessed a Wu Tang performance. I left early, missing out on a couple of my favorites (Dead Sara and Andy Clockwise). I had to get to Santa Monica for the Milk Carton Kids CD release event where I spent two hours on the brink of tears, either from laughing too hard or from the sheer beauty and brilliance of the music. Then I jetted from McCabe’s down to Saint Rocke just in time to be blown away by the powerful and empowering Nico Vega. So many great friends gathered at this final performance, I ended up talking/laughing/smiling through the wee hours. A day to remember for sure!

And really, yesterday was just the beginning of a week-long celebration of music and friends surrounding The Sunset Strip Music Festival. If you want to know what I’m up to next week, just go here: http://www.sunsetstripmusicfestival.com/.

And that’s not all? In fact, there are so many shows I wish I could go to this week but can’t that I’m beginning to think that I’ve done something to upset the universe. The cruelty of having TFDI’s So-Cal dates conflict directly with SSMF. The inhumanity of me NOT getting a ticket to see Muth Math at The Troubadour. The audacity of scheduling TWO Death Cab for Cutie/Frightened Rabbit dates when I cannot attend either one.

What a week! Here goes my list:

Monday: Automatique at The Viper Room (10:15)
ALSO: Robert Francis FREE at Bootleg Bar (11pm)

SSMF Lineup Announced!

I know we just got back to Bonnaroo and trust me, more on that soon. But today’s big news is the announcement of the lineup for the Sunset Strip Music Festival (SSMF). Once a year, the Sunset Strip puts on a gigantic block party featuring major artists from around the world as well as more local bands that might call the strip their home. It’s a three day party starting on Thursday August 18th with a tribute to this year’s honorees, Motley Crue at the House of Blues. Both Thursday and Friday, clubs around the strip (The Roxy, The Viper Room, Whiskey a Go-Go, Key Club, House of Blues) will host a variety of bands. Saturday the 20th is the daytime festival where headliners Motley Crue as well as Bush, Public Enemy, Matt & Kim, etc will play on an outdoor stage while other bands continue to fill the surrounding clubs.

For more information about the lineups, tickets, etc., check out official SSMF website: http://www.sunsetstripmusicfestival.com/

I’m excited about so many of these artists…especially seeing so many of my favorites on the bill. Based on my initial reaction, here’s what I’ll most likely be up to that weekend.

Thursday August 18th: The Veronicas, The Tender Box, and Run Run Run at The Viper Room

Friday August 19th: Amazing lineup at The Viper Room featuring Eli James, Taylor Locke and The Roughs, Lady Sinatra, and Purple Melon
ALSO: Buckcherry at The Roxy

Saturday August 20th:
Outdoor Stage: Motley Crue, Bush
The Key Club:  Deluka, Youngblood Hawke, Indians
The Roxy: Queen Caveat, Sabrosa Purr, Jordan Cook, Imagine Dragons, Semi Precious Weapons

More to come about this festival I’m sure…get your tickets now.

This festival is going to rock!!

SXSW Day 3: Recap

Sorry for the delay in posting…it’s been crazy. I wrote this as a recap of Friday’s events:

I’m sitting down at the end of the day thinking about all that I just accomplished in the previous 24 hours and I’m simply floored. I refuse to believe that it was this morning that I ventured into the British Music Embassay for some breakfast (egg buttys and chips) and tunes, yet I don’t recall a breakfast I’ve had since, so it must have been! Today was particularly special because it was my birthday (YAY!) and honestly I can’t think of a better way to have spent it. Here are some highlights

* the aforementioned breakfast (seriously the food here in Austin has been amazing)

* the aforementioned British bands (ie The Good Natured)

* meeting Bob Geldof on a random park bench

* Dancing for every single band on the amazing lineup at The Force launch party at Red Eye Fly (included Little Red Radio, My Cousin The Emperor, Purple Melon, The Silent Comedy, Taylor Locke & The Roughs, Viva City, Hugo, and Deluka among others…I mean seriously I have never danced that hard for that long)

* dancing on stage with The Silent Comedy

* FINALLY seeing SINAI (jaw on the ground)

* discovering another band from Philly that blew my mind (Meriwether)

* Keaton Simons (who just makes any day a much better one)

* finally getting to see Liam Finn

* again, all the really cool and interesting people met out on the street or at the venues

* fried pickles

Amanda’s typing up the Day 4 recap as I post this…coming soon!
