New Music Tuesday 2/12/13 Featuring The Stone Foxes

The Stone FoxesSmall Fires

All hail The Stone Foxes, a fearsome foursome from SF whose album, Small Fires, comes out today. If you’re a fan of bluesy rock with a hint of face-melting guitar, this album is for you.  If you favor songs that simmer for a bit before coming to boil, this album is for you.  If you don’t like movin’ and groovin’ (or at least foot tappin’), then maybe you shouldn’t bother with this album as its tunes are the type that infect. The infection can be slow, but before you know it you WILL be bobbing you head and you will get odd looks from your co-workers (okay, maybe that last one is just me).

For a taste, here’s the video for the first single off Small Fires, “Everybody Knows”

More Top Picks from Recent Releases:

I’m behind on my music acquiring/listening, but that doesn’t mean you need to be…

Frightened RabbitPedestrian Verse

I haven’t heard this album in its entirety, but I love this band so I’m sure it will be a must-have for my collection.

The Shadowboxers– Red Room

I recently discovered this Atlanta-based band, but I liked them so much their track “Sidewalk” made it on my 2012 Mix B-Sides. A couple weeks ago, they released an album, Red Room. I still need to dig into the album, but it’s near the top of my queue.

Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 1/14-1/20

It’s almost noon on Monday and I’m still in bed. Not for much longer though. I officially go back to tomorrow because apparently I like to torture myself. I just had what you might call a ‘last hurrah’ at Disneyland yesterday after being a part of A Trolley Show featuring one of our favorite bands Youngblood Hawke. I guess my point is to please excuse this ramble because my brain still isn’t fully functional.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/14-1/20

Only two weeks into the new year and I already have some new band obsessions. Last Friday’s show at The Hotel Cafe with Red Wanting Blue was the most entertaining and energetic show I’ve been to this year. The Ohio-based band doesn’t come to LA that often, but they had the room in a frenzy. They also have great taste in openers as they selected one of my personal favorites, The Young Romans. Since Friday, I have not been able to stop listening to Red Wanting Blue’s albums…except to listen to a few other recent favorites, The Delta Saints’ Red Letter Jubilee (out this Tuesday!), Mother Mother’s recent release, The Sticks, and European duo Boy’s Mutual Friends.

This year is already so musically bountiful!

This upcoming week looks pretty singer-songwriter heavy for me. I think I’m most excited about Saturday at The Roxy. I mean, how many years has it been since Teddy Geiger appeared on that canceled way too soon TV show about the music talent scout played by Tom Cavanaugh? I was instantly drawn to the show and the young promising talent.

Here’s what else is on my radar. Need more rock in your life? Try Thursday night at The Viper Room or sample The Ten Thousand at Los Globos as part of their January residency.

SXSW Recap: 3/13

It’s 3:30 am (again) and despite having droopy eyes, I’m somehow awake (again). I’m not complaining mind you. I’m just making a statement about life during SXSW. Today was the unofficial start of the festival if you will. This is a day filled with long lines, wristband and badge pick up, hustling, waiting, and all kinds of running around. It isn’t till the evening time that the music really starts. And that, is magic.

Somehow I’ve already amassed 4 wristbands, 3 badges, and a bag of swag. Also managed to score a wonderful free veggie dog from the Hot Dog King cart courtesy of @girlshbo. And this is only day 1. Tomorrow promises to be even crazier but tonight was an excellent start.

Our musical night started with He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister playing as Rain Bro at Bayou Lounge as part of the ATN showcase. Following that was Viva City at Chuggin Monkey (dance party!), and was topped off with a healthy dose of Saint Motel at Treasure Island. It was great to finally see He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister and what better time than at SXSW?! And I must say, it was lovely to have that dance party with Viva City. A year is far too long to wait. And what can I say about Saint Motel other than what a great way to finish off the night. It made my night complete. Also, they have a free download if you head to their site!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/27-3/4

This week’s concert list is brought to you from an Academy Awards viewing party. So far, Hugo is winning a lot more than I anticipated, but I’m still pulling for The Artist for the win. I did pretty well seeing all but one of the best picture nominees (sorry War Horse, not gonna happen). I’m sad that there weren’t more original song nominations…and that we aren’t going to see a live performance of “Man or Muppet”. Although, I am enjoying the live music playing out to commercials (was that an electric guitar?).

I can’t believe next week we enter the month of March! It’s almost SXSW time!! In preparation, I may be a little light on show-going next week. Alternatively there are some great shows on the West Side this week which will really save me on travel time.
