Kristen’s SXSW ’11 Mix: Part 1

This year’s SXSW experience was a little different than in years past (ie I actually got to GO instead of my usual just listening to all of the artists). Still, I wanted to maintain the spirit of my annual SXSW Mix being a list of artists that are mostly new to me that I somehow discovered or was inspired to write about due to my SXSW experience.  I am so excited about every one of these artists/groups. I can’t wait for them to come through LA and play!

I’ve broken the mix down into several parts which will be revealed over the next several days…enjoy!

  1. “Something In the Water” – Brooke Fraser

She may have been quite popular for several years, but only just before SXSW this year did Brooke Fraser hit my radar. This New Zealand native played several showcases in Austin including one sponsored by my favorite venue, The Hotel Cafe. Check out her third ablum, Flags, for this tune as well as my other favorite BF song, “Who Are We Fooling” featuring Aqualung.

2. “Coming Down That Road” – The Deaf

Came across this song while cruising the SXSW artist pages. Instantly it caught my attention, putting this band from the Netherlands on my need to see list.

3. “Run Back Home” – The Blue Pages

The Blue Pages was one of many acts that I discovered form the All Together Now Showcase. These Brooklyn boys put on a captivating show. If you’re in the NYC area, go check them out at Bowery Electric June 23rd!

4. “Sail” – AWOLNation

One of the best crowds I was in at SXSW this year was for AWOLNATION’s set at Rusty Spurs. They made my list of top SXSW sets…I really can’t wait to see these guys again. Come back to LA already!

more to come…

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/13-1/19

I’m still feeding of the epicness that was The Black Crowes at The Palladium Saturday night. Being at the rail for the extra long (was it really three hours?) final set was an intense experience I won’t soon forget…and I’m not just saying that because I think that the incense they were burning on stage has permanently affixed itself deep inside my nostrils.

Hopefully the Palladium show, which also featured personal favorites Truth & Salvage Co.  was just an indicator of what is to come. FREE Music Downtown LA

Weds night I found myself downtown at Pershing Square for a free outdoor concert featuring the unlikely combination of Meiko and Purple Melon. I enjoy both the LA-based songstress and the British rockers and the show was very Hotel Cafe meets The Viper Room in a park with food trucks and free lattes (AKA awesome!).

What is also awesome is that Pershing Square offers these free shows several times a week ALL SUMMER long! Weds nights are sponsered by Beta Records and  Thursday nights go by Spaceland under the stars. Then the week culminates in another show Saturday night.

To check out the schedule go here

So many great artists to look forward to…I’m especially excited about The Janks on August 7th.

Seriously, how can you pass up free music in a park?

Cary Brothers CD Release at the Hotel Cafe

09 Something About You

I don’t have much time to share all the details of the fantastic night of music I experienced last Friday. The line-up at The Hotel Cafe included Joey Ryan (with Kenneth Pattengale, of course), Cary Brothers, and Truth & Salvage Co. (one of their last LA shows before hitting the road once again).

The whole night, however, was really about the release of Cary Brothers’ new CD, “Under Control”. I could go on and on about how much I enjoyed his set (yes he also played old standards like “Blue Eyes” and “Honestly”) or how I’m loving the new CD (current faves include “Ghost Town”, and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”), but I’ll just leave you with the track I find myself humming as I write this. “Something About You” is Cary’s take on the 80’s classic and is sung with the very talented Laura Jansen. Listen. Love. Go out and get Cary Brothers’ newest CD!

Joey Ryan Residency

If it’s a Thursday in March than it must be a Joey Ryan day! Joey’s March residency at The Hotel Cafe continues this evening at 8pm. Joey Ryan is a fairly new discovery.  Amanda and I both first saw him open for Carney last fall and he instantly went on my watch list. I have since seen him a couple times at The Hotel Cafe and every time I see him, I think I fall in love a little more. Especially since the release of his EP Kenter Canyon which is one of the best EPs I’ve heard in awhile (definitely so far this year).  To endear him even more (to my heart at least), his website says that, at one point, he was planning on attending graduate school to study neuroscience!

If you get a chance, come out and see Joey Ryan at The Hotel Cafe. He’ll sing some songs about the weather and then offer to give you a hug. What more could you want!?! Here are his residency dates:

TONIGHT: March 4th: 8pm- Hotel Cafe (also with Jim Bianco and Honeyhoney)

March 11th: 10pm (with Jim Bianco, Melissa Ferrick, and Caitlin Crosby and Jay Nash)

March 25th: 8pm- Hotel Cafe

Sadly ,he will be at SXSW for one Thursday in between (the 18th) which happens to be my birthday…

Local LA Shows For The Week

Nico Vega’s new music video for their song “Gravity” is FINALLY out! I was fortunate enough to be a part of it and so proud of how it turned out. We might as well call this Nico Vega week. Starts with a fantastic music video and ends on Friday with their show at the El Rey opening for The Soundtrack of Our Lives. And if you’re really crazy (like me), you might consider a midweek journey to San Diego to catch them at The Casbah…seriously…
