Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/23-1/29

Last week was a phenomenal week of shows. I believe I was out every night save the weekend (I much prefer staying in on the weekends anyway). My weekend was also fairly “epic” but in another sense. I made my third batch of 2011 mix CDs while watching the third Lord of the Rings movie (Return of The King) and I started re-reading the third book in the Inheritance cycle. I rather enjoy retreating into worlds full of elves and dragons where epic battles are won and heroes come from the unlikeliest of sources. And as I listen to Annie Lennox sing “Into the West” I am disheartened at the thought of returning to my somewhat less glorious real life.

Life does have a few treats in store for me this week, however. Bonnaroo highlight (and ’11 mix artist) Cory Chisel will be in town Tuesday night at The Echo, San Diego faves, Endoxi, will be rockin’ The Roxy Thursday, and LA love Queen Caveat is back in action with their first show of the new year Friday night at The Viper Room. Merry Christmas! Happy New Year!! Because it’s the holiday season, this week is a bit light on shows. I would like to think I’ll be using the time to catch up on my movie and tv watching, but I’ll most likely spend most of it catching up on work and suffering from live music withdrawal.

I think I just about holiday-partied myself out last week…but by the end of The Hotel Cafe Christmas party last night even I was beginning to feel some holiday cheer! Now there is just one more week of frenetic deadlines and important meetings at work before I get some time off (to catch up on more work! Yay!). To help get me through, there is the music. Today I’ve been busy watching the baseball game (Go Cardinals!), grading exams, and trying to ignore this sore throat that’s been building over the last few days. There is just too much going on in my life to get sick! Last week was fairly epic musically. I made it to at least one set a night, saw several of my favorite bands (Imagine Dragons, Harper Blynn, Lakes, etc), and even got in a couple top notch national acts (St. Vincent is a marvel).

This week marks Youngblood Hawke’s last residency date at The Satellite, so if you haven’t caught them yet, don’t miss it (and bring your dancing shoes). It’s also week two of Harper Blynn’s Hotel Cafe residency. I still can’t believe how lucky we are to have these NYC boys with us until Thanksgiving!

This week brings us Filter Magazine’s Culture Collide Festival. This multi-cultural festival, primarily taking place in Silverlake, combines live music, film screenings and food from around the world. For more information, check out the website (http://culturecollide.com/). Festival tickets can be purchased for $20 and there is a free block party at the end of the week. I’m not overly familiar with many of the bands, but I’m looking forward to discovering some new international artists. All of my recommended musical events associated with the festival will be marked with a CCF.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 8/29-9/4

I’m still sad about the cancellation of Sunset Junction. While I enjoyed the psudeo-Sunset Junction party in the backyard of Dangerbird Records yesterday (I’m definitely getting the new Butch Walker record out this week), I was really looking forward to the Belle Brigade/Rooney/Hanson line-up today. I guess it’s all for the best. Now I have some time to catch up on work! Yay.

Other highlights from last week include my feat of epic proportions, finally seeing Brett Hite (such an amazing voice), the intimate Hotel Cafe performance from Needtobreathe (I was a puddle on the floor after that one) and seeing Michelle Branch again after six years (brought back so many happy memories).

What I’m really looking forward to this week is the recently scheduled TFDI performance at Room 5 Monday night. Here I was thinking I was going to miss all of their Southern California stops. And playing with Garrison Starr! I expect nothing short of amazing.
