Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/26-12/2

As the holiday party invitations start to come in, I’m reminded that it’s time to put my end of year music mix together. For those of you who don’t know, every year I make a mix of all the songs and artists that meant something to me over the year…they are usually accompanied by a story and pictures. I work on this all year round, but the hardest part is pulling it together at the end and finding the time to create and produce the final product (aka Christmas gifts!). For this year’s mix, I had the first “rough draft” done for a couple weeks ago and and I’ve since made a few tweaks, but I’m still not 100% happy with it. However, if my first party is in just a couple of weeks, I’ll need to start manufacturing soon! Or maybe I should just accept the fact that my Christmas gifts will be late…again.

And who knows, maybe there will be a show this month that will change my life and alter the mix entirely (December 6th early show at The Satellite, I’m looking at you!). There are plenty of promising options these week. Here are my picks:

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/5-11/11

Last week was such a blur. I think this is mostly because I didn’t sleep very much. When you’re only taking 2-4 hr. “naps”, it can get quite difficult to keep track of things like days…and dinner time. My favorite Danes, terminal, left to go back to Denmark on Friday and I already feel the hole in my life. I often come across music that moves me, but for the people behind the music to be equally as touching…that is truly something special and I feel blessed to have had this band in my life the last month. I was very fortunate in that before I could wallow in their absence for too long, a conveniently timed facebook message reminded me that my favorite Aussie-born brothers, The Kin, are coming to town this week. Thursday night they play The Roxy. It feels like I have been waiting years for these guys to come back to play LA and I would strongly encourage you all to come out and see them Thursday night before they disappear again. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/29-11/4

Don’t even talk to me about last week. I didn’t get out much. I did manage to have a panic attack or two due to the overwhelming situation I have found myself in at work. Things are not going well on that front. It makes me a bit miserable. I feel like a different person when I’m not out going to shows. I think I might have overcompensated Saturday night when I did get out to see Queen Caveat at The Roxy…I ended up on stage.

This week, I will do my best to get out to at least one or two shows, maintaining what I can of my sanity. I’d highly recommend Tuesday at TRiP to see the last show of my new favorite band, terminal, before they return to Denmark and take with them some serious sunshine.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/22-10/28

Last night I went to Saint Rocke to see Stephen Kellogg & The Sixers on their HI-ATE-US tour. The idea being that the band is going on this indefinite hiatus, pursuing other projects, yada yada. This kind of thing always upsets me. I see bands akin to any serious relationship. You have a connection, so you start hanging out writing songs. You put out an EP and start touring, well you’re definitely dating. You get signed to a label do that big national tour, headlining venues, well my friends, you are married! All marriages have their problems and some are not as successful as others, but that doesn’t mean you give up on them! I don’t care if you’re a young marriage and your parents (ie your label) suddenly stop supporting you. I don’t care if you’ve been at it for years and are just “tired” of one another.

What hurts the most is “the other woman” syndrome. Just because something shiny and new catches your eye, doesn’t make it okay to leave your current relationship. You made a commitment and you should be faithful! I know there are many sides to these stories, but as a fan, I can only see it one way: a betrayal (I could equate the fan to God in this scenario, but that may be taking the analogy too far). I applaud SK and The Sixers for their clever title to their tour for at least they recognize what they are doing (not that any fan could ever hate a band they loved). It was an amazing show, but it still hurts.

On the other end of the spectrum, and giving me hope for all bands currently in the “indefinite hiatus” limbo, rock-outfit Silvertide (one of my favorites from back in the day when I was living in Philadlephia) have been making rumblings about something happening in that camp. On a quieter note, last night outside Harrisburg PA, members of Jealousy Curve took to the stage to deliver a few of their tunes.  They only played a few songs, but it is amazing how something so seemingly insignificant can fill me with so much hope, not just for a Jealousy Curve reunion, but for life in general.

Ok, sorry for the rant. I’ll get to the point now. Here’s my music schedule for this week. As for my top picks, I’m looking forward to finally seeing Belmont Lights who play Thursday at Molly Malone’s. I’m also, of course, excited about Queen Caveat’s return to LA Saturday at the Roxy (that is, of course, if they can get their van problems worked out: http://www.facebook.com/events/481540455213679/?fref=ts).

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/15-10/21

In the middle of a bit of a work-crisis, so I’ll keep this short. Actually this whole week has kind of been one work crisis after another…and sadly I do not see the end. I did get out Wednesday night to check out rocksters, Leogun, and I am pleased to report I have a new band love from the UK.

Speaking of recent band discoveries, I have a few this week I’d really like to see. Sad Robot continues their Silverlake Lounge residency Monday night and then my favorite band from Culture Collide, Denmark’s terminal, has a show Thursday night also at Silverlake Lounge. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/17-9/23

This weekend I was down in San Diego for The San Diego Music Thing. SDMT is the half-way marker of the year for SXSW and in a sense it is a mini version of my favorite music conference. I love walking the streets of North Park hopping from venue to venue sampling artists both new (to me) as well as old favorites. Despite the ubiquitous sound issues and the frustrating scheduling conflicts, I’d call the weekend a success. I caught some of my favorite LA bands like Queen Caveat and NO, some great out of town bands including Austin’s Ume, Seattle’s Ben Union and San Francisco’s The Stone Foxes and, of course, fun SD bands such as Dr. Seahorse and The Howls. This week I have a big presentation at work, and at least one, if not two trips to San Diego. There are also some fantastic shows at The Hotel Cafe this week: Wheeler Brothers, Teitur, and Harper Blynn playing two sets, one of original songs and one of covers featuring several of their very talented friends.
