Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/30-10/6

Well, Rocktober is indeed upon us. It would be quite easy to do a show a night all month long and not hit a weak one in the bunch. It also involves making a lot of hard choices and, if your schedule doesn’t permit going to shows every night, a lot of sacrifices. My top shows this week are mostly bigger names: Frightened Rabbit and Augustines, Matt Nathanson and Joshusa Radin, and the rock band that defined my high school years, Travis!

New Music Tuesday 9/3/13 Featuring Bastille, The 1975, The Griswolds

Well, here’s what I’ve got on my radar this week…

BastilleBad Blood

The record has been out for some time overseas, but this week it was finally released in the US and I adore this band and album, so I thought I’d mention it again. It went up to number 2 on the iTunes album chart so I guess I’m not the only one. I’ve been enjoying Bastille in whatever bits I could get my hands on, but now I’m thrilled that I can finally digest the album in its entirety! From more well-known songs like “Laura Palmer” and “Things
Lost in the Fire” to the deeper cuts I wasn’t as familiar with (currently loving bonus track, “The Silence”), I’d say this is one of those albums to listen to front to back on repeat.

The 1975The 1975

I am very back and forth on this album from these buzzy indie rockers from Manchester. My ups and downs with the band go back to my first viewing at SXSW which didn’t leave me with the best impression. Then I slowly came back around after hearing some recordings. The first time I listened to this album, I was dancing around the room, but by the end of it, I was bored with its “sameness”. I think I appreciate this band and album most in moderation. I took my favorite tracks (“Sex”, “Chocolate”, “The City”) and put them in their own playlist and now I can’t stop listening. Take from that what you will…

of a Lion EP

Fun dance rock from an up and coming Aussie group. You can listen to the EP on bandcamp. I think these 4 songs are a taste of great things to come. I denote The Griswolds a band to watch!

  • Nine Inch Nails – Hesitation Marks
  • Neko Case – The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You
  • Okkervil River – The Silver Gymnasium
  • North Mississippi Allstars – World Boogie is Coming
  • RDGLDGRN – Red Gold Green
