Just got back from a crazy evening of awesomeness and feeling grateful for so many things: My friends for kicking me out the door and keeping me company all night, The Viper Room simply for being there, Duke’s for having some fairly amazing cuisine, my new friends for sharing some fun stories and being crazy cool, and most importantly, Dead Sara, my new band love that blew my MIND. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/6-12/12

Tonight marked the final performance of LMN mainstays, Mississippi Man. I first saw this band play with Get Back Loretta at The Bootleg. I thought they were good. The thing about Mississippi Man, however, is that every time I’ve seen them since, they’ve gotten better and better. They came back from a tour with The Silent Comedy in particularly good form. I’m sure that tonight, their final performance, was their absolute best. But I am sad that I will not get the opportunity to continue to watch them grow and improve. If you haven’t already, you should check out their most recent record, A-OK. Mississippi Man will be missed.

Let’s focus on the flip side of seeing a great band’s last performance; seeing your new favorite band play for the first time. In remembrance of Mississippi Man, let’s make it a point this week to discover some new amazing music. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/11-10/17

These last couple weeks have been rough. My schedule has been commandeered by a little thing called teaching. In trying to maintain my busy schedule with the additional duties of being a teaching assistant I have managed to get sick again…I suppose the severe lack of sleep might have contributed. Anyway, the dearth of posting will most likely continue until December when my schedule can return to its usual merely busy state.

Unfortunately, this also means I have to cut back on my concert-going…I’m going to aim for a healthy diet of 2-3 shows per week and see if that can get me through. This week I am continuing my kick of going to see artists from the UK (like Biffy Clyro and Tired Pony). Fran Healy is branching out from his band, Travis, to do a solo album. He plays twice this week, once at Bardot and once at The Hotel Cafe (the latter being sold out already). Then on Weds., my last year’s band obsession, Frightened Rabbit, returns to LA to play at The Mayan. But those are only the tip of the ice berg when it comes to great shows going on around town this week. You will all have to double your efforts to go out in my absence. Here’s what I suggest:

Currently watching the latest episode of Supernatural. This afternoon, I’m starting my birthday week off by heading to the PaleyFest Supernatural panel so I want to be prepared. Then it’s time to go to Austin! SXSW will be insane!! Hopefully there will be time for updates, but check out my list of the artists I’m most looking forward to seeing. When I get back I’ll work on preparing my annual SXSW mix.
