Happy Turkey Week! Or if you are of the vegetarian/vegan persuasion, Happy Tofurkey Week! I hope everyone is getting ready for a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family and loved ones with lots of good food to go with the good company. I’m spending my time with my mom and all the animals. San Diego Music Awards: Nominees Announced!

The San Diego Music Awards is an event that takes place every year celebrating local San Diego music and honoring some of the best SD bands. This event will take place Sunday Sept. 12th and will certainly be a must-attend.

This year’s nominees include some LMN favorites such as The Silent Comedy, Endoxi, Dirty Sweet, and Get Back Loretta…as well as some bands that have a place on my personal “to watch” list (Scarlett Symphony, The Loons, Republic of Letters, Transfer, The Burning of Rome, White Apple Tree, Nervous Wreckords, etc.). Most excitedly (for me at least), the list of nominees contains many names that I am unfamiliar with, presenting an opportunity to investigate new music!

Here is the list

Let’s start listening!

p.s. to get you started, a sampling of songs from nominees who happen to be playing in Los Angeles at The Viper Room THIS WEEK!

Transfer at The Viper Room Thursday July 29th (11pm)

Dirty Sweet at The Viper Room Friday July 30th (11pm)

Nervous Wreckords at The Viper Room Saturday July 31st (9pm)

Nico Vega at The Casbah – Kristen's Take

Yeah, so I drove down to San Diego with my friend Trina to see Nico Vega last night. This morning was tremendously painful, but it was definitely worth it. Nico Vega always puts on such a stellar show in San Diego. The audience was amazing, the other bands (The Loons, Soundtrack of Our Lives) were fun, and who doesn’t LOVE The Casbah?!? The set included a mix of the band’s newer songs (“Taxi Cab”, “Fe Fi Fo”) as well as some older fare (“So So Fresh”, “Blood Machine”, “Underground”), but regrettably left off a couple of my personal favorites (“Million Years”, “Protest ..?”). But of course they played “Gravity” and ended with what has to be one of the best closings songs ever, “Beast” (tied with Carney’s “Testify” of course!). The set was SO good that the audience continued singing well after the band was offstage, a plea for an encore that, unfortunately, never came.  Trina said knowing this band was kind of like being in a cult, and I tend to agree. Once you are introduced to them you can’t turn away. Your life is forever changed and your soul will forever belong to the power trio that is Nico Vega.
