Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 9/23-9/29

This is the first time I’ve been on my laptop since I left town on Friday morning for a wedding in New Hampshire. The wedding was super fun with good food, new friends, and some crazy good dance times. I got back in town yesterday and went to see Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, and twenty one pilots that evening. I totally forgot how much fun a big arena show with great production can be. I’m spending today recovering from all the travel and dancing the last few days have held because there is so much stuff going on this week. It’s almost noon on Monday and I’m still in bed. Not for much longer though. I officially go back to tomorrow because apparently I like to torture myself. I just had what you might call a ‘last hurrah’ at Disneyland yesterday after being a part of A Trolley Show featuring one of our favorite bands Youngblood Hawke. Only two weeks into the new year and I already have some new band obsessions. Last Friday’s show at The Hotel Cafe with Red Wanting Blue was the most entertaining and energetic show I’ve been to this year. The Ohio-based band doesn’t come to LA that often, but they had the room in a frenzy. They also have great taste in openers as they selected one of my personal favorites, The Young Romans. Since Friday, I have not been able to stop listening to Red Wanting Blue’s albums…except to listen to a few other recent favorites, The Delta Saints’ Red Letter Jubilee (out this Tuesday!), Mother Mother’s recent release, The Sticks, and European duo Boy’s Mutual Friends.

This year is already so musically bountiful!

This upcoming week looks pretty singer-songwriter heavy for me. I think I’m most excited about Saturday at The Roxy. I mean, how many years has it been since Teddy Geiger appeared on that canceled way too soon TV show about the music talent scout played by Tom Cavanaugh? I was instantly drawn to the show and the young promising talent.

Here’s what else is on my radar. Need more rock in your life? Try Thursday night at The Viper Room or sample The Ten Thousand at Los Globos as part of their January residency.

Happy New Year!! Whatever you end up doing to celebrate the transition into 2013, I hope you stay safe and have a blast. Once again I am foregoing my former tradition of staying in and watching Star Wars in favor of some live music. My concert of choice this year is Dirty Sweet at The Griffin in San Diego! A one-off reunion show from a band I love that hasn’t played in a couple of years. How can I refuse? I think more bands “on hiatus” should do this kind of thing.

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to so many shows coming in the New Year, starting with next week! I’m particularly excited about Thursday night at The Roxy with Lakes, The Active Set and Royal Teeth. I hope to see you all out at a show soon!

Here are my other top picks:

Monday: Vintage Trouble at The Roxy (8pm)
ALSO: Puddle of Mudd at Whiskey a Go Go (7pm)
ALSO: Petty Cash at Smoke (10pm)

Saturday: Keaton Simons, Steve Carlson, and The Borrower’s Debt at The Hotel Cafe (9,10:30, 11:30)
ALSO: Terra Naomi and Sonia Rao at WitZend (8, 10)

I hope you all have a great Christmas! I’m not really looking forward to three days of no live music, but I certainly have enough to do to fill the time. If you are on my mailing list, expect a little present later today or tomorrow!!

Speaking of gifts, if you’d like to do something for me, might I suggest helping out some worthy musicians, Danish indie synth-pop trio terminal, in their Pledge Music Campaign. terminal and their music came into my life last fall when I was going through some difficult times and listening to them really helped get me through. I’ve become a big fan and would love to see them succeed in their goal of raising funds to record some music. At any rate, go check them out, download some of their music (for free!), and if you feel so inclined make a pledge (just $10 will get you a download of their next album, Ignite the World part II).
