Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/1-4/7

Happy Easter! After a long and tiring week, it is really nice to relax and celebrate. When I moved to Los Angeles 5 years ago, one of the things I knew I would miss would be sharing these big holidays with my family, but I’m pretty sure that first year celebrating Easter in LA was when I realized what a great new family I had made here. And in the subsequent years this gathering has become my yearly reminder of how many wonderful and inspiring people I have since met and claimed as my own. I’m pretty sure this year is our largest gathering yet. I mean, the leg of lamb my roommate brought home yesterday…well, I wasn’t even sure it would fit in the oven!

I hope to extend my celebratory mood into the week with the help of some excellent shows. I think the two I’m most looking forward to are the amazing string of acts at The Hotel Cafe Wednesday and Sunday nights. People often ask me what my favorite venue in LA is and I have to say The Hotel Cafe because there is no other venue that can so consistently put together solid lineups from front to back. As much as I venue hop, sometimes it’s nice to see a bunch of your favorites all in one place…

Just got back from the San Diego Safari Park. Such a fun experience! Two amazing facts I learned today. 1) the cheetahs have canine companions. Seeing the two creatures so disparate in my mind being so chummy was a tad mind blowing. 2) There are only 8 black rhinos in the world. They are all past reproductive age so there will never be more than 8, only less. I saw two of them walking around today. Again, mind blown.

I’m in San Diego for a conference where I will be presenting tomorrow. It’ll be an all-day affair, so I thought I’d get my calendar done and out early. If you’re in LA tonight (Saturday), I’d strongly recommend heading to Molly Malone’s to catch Zane Carney play at 10pm.

I survived the weekend in the desert. I think my body is still recovering from the shock of not being in the 100+ degree weather. I’m hoping to write up a post featuring the highlights of my Coachella experience and some pictures. Happy Easter everyone! It’s a time for rebirth and I certainly feel like my life is changing. I have this horrible feeling like the decisions I make in the next couple of weeks will have a profound influence on the rest of my life. At Easter mass, I prayed for the strength to make the right choices. Currently I’m failing at boiling some eggs for dying so clearly my prayers have not been heard quite yet.

Friday night, I was lucky enough to be at The Bootleg Theater to watch Garbage “rehearse” for their upcoming tour. Shirley Manson and company are still on top of their game, rocking out a lengthy set list of Garbage hits as well as a couple new tunes from their forthcoming record. Just got back from the long drive from Austin, TX where we spent a glorious week immersed in the musical insanity that is SXSW. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/17-10/23

Another week, come and gone. I’ve been so busy lately just about every hour of every day has to be planned out in order to even get some of my to do list accomplished. I pulled two all-nighters last week and still I cannot keep up with all of the tasks coming in. This week I add “grade exams” to my list, so I’m not hopeful that life will get easier any time soon. Hopefully, I’ll be able to squeeze in some shows. There are quite a few goodies. Monday, once again, offers a jam packed evening of amazing (mostly free) musical options. I’m also super excited about the return of Harper Blynn to Los Angeles. They will be doing a fall residency at The Hotel Cafe starting this Weds playing with Melissa Ferrick! The week rounds itself out with a performance by indie darlings and my home town (Philly) natives, War on Drugs.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/11-10/17

These last couple weeks have been rough. My schedule has been commandeered by a little thing called teaching. In trying to maintain my busy schedule with the additional duties of being a teaching assistant I have managed to get sick again…I suppose the severe lack of sleep might have contributed. Anyway, the dearth of posting will most likely continue until December when my schedule can return to its usual merely busy state.

Unfortunately, this also means I have to cut back on my concert-going…I’m going to aim for a healthy diet of 2-3 shows per week and see if that can get me through. This week I am continuing my kick of going to see artists from the UK (like Biffy Clyro and Tired Pony). Fran Healy is branching out from his band, Travis, to do a solo album. He plays twice this week, once at Bardot and once at The Hotel Cafe (the latter being sold out already). Then on Weds., my last year’s band obsession, Frightened Rabbit, returns to LA to play at The Mayan. But those are only the tip of the ice berg when it comes to great shows going on around town this week. You will all have to double your efforts to go out in my absence. Here’s what I suggest:
