I’ve been getting in some solid reading time these days. My preferred genre is whatever will take me furthest away from reality, but it feels like everything I have read recently has some uncanny relevance to the current moment. First, my book club book, Isaac Asimov’s Foundation which, while taking place in a seemingly distant galaxy, reads like a primer on how to manipulate an entire empire under the guise of education, religion, and economics.  Tonight, I’ll finish Shades of Grey by Jasper Fforde which takes place in a world where hue-based color perception is not only a genetic variant but a determinant of societal standing.  As delightfully absurd as the book reads on the surface (think Douglas Adams), its innards reveal a veiled reflection on how an entire society can be kept in the dark about certain realities by a deceptive governance.  Maybe I should pick up some sort of romance novel next. That, surely, will be the most distant reality…

My musical tastes last week drifted towards the more low-key sounds. Sets from Jay Nash (with Garrison Starr!), Ben Sollee, and Dylan LeBlanc were just what I needed. Not that I didn’t sneak in a few lovely rock numbers from Billy from the Subways, King No-One and the last of the Corella Saturdays.
