Kristen’s Top 5 Coachella Set Recommendations

I won’t be making it to the desert this year, but if I were, here are the 5 sets I wouldn’t miss…

1. Tom Odell: Friday noon, Mojave Tent

Get a spot where you can see him playing the piano

2. Bastille: Friday 5:25, Mojave Tent

And to think, just a year ago they were playing The Troubadour

3. Saints of Valory: Saturday noon, Outdoor Theater

A recommendation from my Rock Boat friends.

4. Frank Turner: Sunday 3:55, Gobi

I know there’s a whole tent for crazy dancing, but this is the set where my hands would be waving wildly in the air.

5. John Newman: Sunday 8:50, Gobi

Because I can’t get this song out of my head and I’ve yet to see this guy live

If you’ll be in Indio, stay cool, stay hydrated, and discover some great new music!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/7-4/13

Watching The Spectacular Now…again. I was at Best Buy for something else and realized I had money on a gift card so I splurged on one of my favorite films from last year. I’m currently watching with the director’s commentary which I always find insightful. It’s just such an honest movie. The characters are unexpected, but real. More movies like this, please!

As for music, we’ve got some good choices for you this week. Mosco Rosco (formally Harper Blynn) start their Monday night residency at The Satellite. New Band Alert: Mosco Rosco

Here’s one that I’m glad I caught (but almost didn’t). LMN Band Love, Harper Blynn, has re-named themselves Mosco Rosco. Along with the new name comes what I’m told is a new sound! Not exactly sure how I feel about this as I adore the sounds of Harper Blynn, but I am optimistic. Regardless, the four gentlemen of Mosco Rosco are one of the tightest groups I have seen, musically. No doubt whatever sound they want to produce will be done incredibly well…and with some pizzazz!

For a hint at what is to come, here’s a listen to their song, “I Wanna Love You” featuring Reggie Watts. It’s got a very 70’s feel and makes you want to groove so I’m into it!

If you’re in LA, the band is doing a Monday residency the month of April at The Satellite!

New Music Tuesday 4/1/14 featuring Caught a Ghost, Nickel Creek, Hurrah! A Bolt of Light, Manchester Orchestra

I have been woefully behind on all the new music coming in, but this week, there are a few that got me excited so I wanted to share.

Caught a Ghost – Human Nature

This album is an absolute gem! From song one it will get you up and have you groovin’. The single, “Sleeping at Night” is a good representation of the album’s feel, but I can’t get over the lead off track, “No Sugar in My Coffee”. As a whole, the album has a unique blend of more modern styles with a very classic blues-y, even motown-esque vibe. Definitely one for the collection. If you’re in LA the band is celebrating the album’s release Friday at Bootleg Bar.

Nickel CreekA Dotted Line

When I first heard this band was re-uniting for a new album, I screeched like a little fan girl. I adored this band’s previous three albums and was heart-broken when this folksy bluegrass trio seemed to go their separate ways seven years ago. But now, new Nickel Creek is here! Listening to A Dotted Line, I am thrilled, but time will tell if it will have the staying power in my playlists as previous efforts. Regardless, I am very much looking forward to Nickel Creek’s show at The Wiltern May 21st.

Hurrah! A Bolt of LightHurrah! A Bolt of Light

This new offering from this indie rock/pop band from NYC reached our inbox and my ears at just the right time. I was searching for something new to listen to and there it was. A couple songs in and I was still invested. Each song is refreshing and fun but has its own unique flavor. If you’re also in the market for something new for your ears, here you go!

Manchester OrchestraCope

I stumbled across a stream of this one the other day…let’s just say that I was up way too late that particular evening. I couldn’t stop listening! Spin calls it “unrelenting” and I think that’s the best possible description.

Other albums I’m hoping to get around to checking out:

  • Band of Skulls – Himalayan
  • Kaiser Chiefs – Education, Education, Education & War
  • Fartbarf- Dirty Power
  • Cloud Nothings  – Here and Nowhere
  • Chevelle – La Gargola
  • Various Artists- Looking Into You: A Tribute to Jackson Browne
  • Saintseneca – Dark Arc

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/18-3/23

Let the SXSW recovery begin! Although, I’m not sure if by “recovery” I mean getting some sleep and return to a more normal routine or if I mean go out to shows every night to hold on to the SXSW magic for as long as possible. Like Amanda said, many of the bands we enjoyed at SXSW are in town this week. My top pick would be Hozier at The Hotel Cafe as he is someone I just didn’t quite make it to see in Austin. However, if you want to hang out and hear all my SXSW stories (and there are some good ones), come to Harvard & Stone Thursday night for The Silent Comedy!
