New Music Tuesday 6/11/13 Featuring The Silent Comedy, Matthew Mayfield, Irontom

Lots of delicious music coming out this summer.  I don’t know how I feel about all the abbreviated EPs (versus full length albums), but I guess that is the way of things. As long as my favorites keep putting amazing new tunes in my ears, I cannot complain. Here’s what  I’ve been listening to this week:

The Silent ComedyFriends
Divide
EP

The wait for new Silent Comedy material has been somewhat
painful, but now I can rejoice as one of my favorite bands has released a
collection of new gems. As a whole, the record seems less aggressive than I’m
used to from a typically raucous Silent Comedy show, but there is still a familiar
edge and tell-tale musicality that can transport you another time and place
that long-time TSC fans might call The Church of The Silent Comedy. This is a
place where the whiskey flows and the world seems a better place, not because
it is not dark, but because in that darkness we know we are not alone.  In other words, go out and buy this record as
you’ll be better for it.

Matthew MayfieldIrons
in the Fire
EP

One listen to the first track off this EP and I’m sold. Matthew has an amazing ability to produce instantly impactful songs that have both an emotional intensity and rough, rocker edge. This EP translates the Mayfield magic to its recorded form surprisingly well making it a very easy purchasing decision. As a bonus, the EP includes a couple new versions of the smoldering “Fire Escape”.

IrontomNitro EP

This one came out last week, but as it has been on repeat in my itunes since then, I would be remiss to not mention it. LMN Band Love Irontom plays somewhat frenzied rock songs and after a few listens, it is hard not to get caught up and swept away in the band’s refreshing take on the genre. This band, for me, has become an addiction. Take a listen and join me!

Some other CDs out today worth checking out:

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 6/10-6/16

I have a powerful playlist of tunes going right now as I put
this calendar together. The new Irontom Nitro

has been the hit of my weekend after seeing them incite a mosh pit

forward to next week, I’ve added some rockin’ Queen Caveat tunes to celebrate
70’s night of their Monday Satellite residency and the Leogun EP in honor of my show pick of the week: Leogun at The Roxy

Show Review: Terraplane Sun at Hollywood Palladium (5/30/13)

It’s no easy task being a local supporting act for a sold out show where the majority of the audience consists of screaming and barely legally able to drink females. This was night #2 for Imagine Dragons at the Hollywood Palladium and the kind of show where the audience is so passionate about the headliner that they would just as soon skip the openers and dive
straight into the main dish. So the Venice Beach, CA five-piece Terraplane Sun had their work cut out for them when they took the stage at 7:30pm to an already packed room. That said, Ben Rothbard, Johnny Zambetti, Cecil Campanaro, Lyle Riddle, and Gabe Feenberg had no problem making  the room and the people in it their new BFFs with their Delta blues swagger and California sun. It’s as if the Doors, Johnny Cash and CSN decided to shack up, musically of course. What’s obvious is that these guys are accomplished musicians: everything from guitars to lap steel to keys to a mandolin to a trombone made an appearance during their set. What’s not so obvious is how they manage to seamlessly fuse what have to be many various tastes and influences, making vintage tones sound fresh and lively: somehow they do. Collectively they looked as comfortable on the large Palladium
stage as they do in club settings (even if you don’t know who they are, they’re hardly new to the game) and performing with a natural ease and showmanship to where, if you looked around the audience you were sure to spot a girl or two falling a little in love with at least one band member. Their set was short, but sweet and effective as they served up “Funnel of Love” and “Ya Never Know” highlighted by the lively steppers “Tell Me I’m Wrong”  (folks just loved Feenberg’s trombone solo) and their ode to going after what you want, their single “Get Me Golden.” Rothbard’s lead vocals were fortified by quality harmonies, Zambetti showed off his solid lead guitar skills, as rhythm sections go, Campanaro and Riddle were joined at the hip and Feenberg is probably that secret weapon that every band needs. When it was over, the applause and yells of approval spoke for themselves. As did the scramble for the EP’s that Rothbard tossed into the crowd.

New Music Tuesday 5/28/13 Featuring Bastille, Laura Marling, Dan and Matt Wilson

BastilleHaunt EP

It is difficult to find the words to express just how excited I am to have UK’s Bastille finally release some music here in the US. Bastille has been one of those bands I go to for comfort and inspiration and quite frankly, I was getting tired of putting music videos on repeat just to listen to the songs. The EP only has four songs (three from the band’s debut, Bad Blood and a new demo from which the EP gets its name), but I haven’t been this excited about a release since Biffy Clyro’s Opposites. If you just want to sample, iTunes has “Pompeii” available as their free download of the week…get on that one!

Laura MarlingOnce I
Was An Eagle

I was lucky enough to catch a live streaming performance of Ms. Marling’s the other day on via KCRW. She simply captivates in a way that reminds me of some of the singer/songwriters I grew up listening to from the 60s/70s. I’ve seen Laura Marling play a few festivals, but honestly, I find her music too intimate for large crowds. Just find yourself alone in a room with your thoughts and put Once I Was An Eagle on the record player and get lost. Through this lens, the record is perfection.

You can listen to the album via NPR first listen here

Dan and Matt WilsonMinneapolis
2013

You know I’m a huge Dan Wilson fan. Dan and his brother Matt have been in various bands over the years and they came together at the Pantages Theater in Minneapolis to play a show featuring songs spanning their careers. We are quite lucky that they recorded the show and this can now be purchased via their website as a digital download. They did this back in 2010 and although I’m not the biggest fan of live albums, this one I love. You can
stream Minneapolis 2013 on the site as well…

Also:

  • Imaginary Cities – Fall of Romance
  • John Fogerty – Wrote a Song For Everyone
  • Alice in Chains – The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here
  • Eisley – Currents
  • Guster – Live Acoustic
  • Rise Against – Rpm10
  •  CocoRosie – Tales of a Grasswindow

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/20-5/26

This message comes to you from The Mint where I am attending one of the coolest events I’ve been to recently, Overture Con. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of hanging out with Bad Wolf, Cadaver Dogs, Queen Caveat, and Semi Precious Weapons. There were informative panels about DIY activities, fashion in music, etc. plus some exclusive opportunities like a Bad Wolf acoustic performance and an advance listen to the Cadaver Dogs CD (made into an intense drinking game). The focus of the event is to connect super fans like myself to their favorite bands and by the end of the day everyone in attendance felt like family to me. Today promises to be similar with a new set of bands like Honor Society who, as I write this, is talking about the notion of living in a box and detailing the unique smell of their dressing room.

Later today, I will be on a panel talking about my life as a super music fan, part of which includes my obsessive desire to put together these calendars every week in my attempt to spread the music love…speaking of, this week promises to be another good one! I’m thrilled that Irish brotherly duo Hudson Taylor booked another show (Monday at Bardot) and I’m equally pumped about Atlanta’s The Shadowboxers who are finally coming to LA playing The Viper Room on Wednesday.
