This week we officially enter the fall season which is my favorite for concert-going. September is off to a very strong start with a few heavy hitters coming to town. I can’t imagine what traffic is going to be like Saturday night with big shows in various parts of town. Personally, I’m inclined to avoid them all and head to downtown for some sweaty warehouse moshing with Wargasm or enthusiastic arm swaying with rising folk-country crooner Max McNown (but I would not say no to a last-minute Oasis invite).

It’s a good week all around for both rock and folk. Here are my top picks:

The Echo Park neighborhood really showed up for Echo Park Rising this weekend. Bars had lines out the door on Saturday and music seemed to be pouring from every storefront. It was a fun opportunity to sample local bands, but my weekend highlights were discovering new neighborhood spots including a chocolate dispensary and a tea house that specializes in Taiwanese oolongs (my favorite!).

Next week we have Yungblud in town celebrating my favorite release of the year, Idols, Augustana with an intimate night at the Venice West and SXSW discovery Monobloc rocking the Kibitz Room.

I’d like give a shout out to The Summer Set for really doing a record release right. The new album, Meet Me At The Record Store, comes out August 15^th, but last week they performed the whole thing for a very pumped up crowd at The Roxy. It was an absolute delight to hear new songs live for the first time in a room full of fans.  The band also played a second set full of more familiar fare and hosted a pop-up shop outside the venue where anyone could purchase the new album and additional merch. Well done!

Next week, there are a surprising number of larger venue shows I might have to look into, but I’m most looking forward to a few rising Brit artists Olivia Dean and Wunderhorse at The Fonda.

Gearing up for one of the most intense weeks of my year at San Diego Comic Con. Once again, I’ll be working with High Voltage to interview talent, promote activations, and cover parties and events. This year, there are several bands playing that I’m thrilled to include in my schedule.  The All-American Rejects, Magnolia Park and the one and only Foxy Shazam are all playing parties or other types of events and I am here for this, Comic Con!

Warped Tour is also coming through California (Long Beach) and we have some of those bands playing other stages in LA and the OC. Notably, Royal & The Serpent bringing her All Grl Jam to the Echo Thursday night as just one option on a very packed night of girl power groups.
