Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/10-2/16

Band Love Alert: I first saw Canadian band, Boniface, a couple years ago at SXSW. I was instantly captivated by this quiet, introspective presence whose songs would burst forth with an emotional intensity and swelling pop/rock melodies. I couldn’t look away! Two years later, Micah Visser (AKA Boniface) and their band is releasing a self-titled debut album THIS FRIDAY! I’ve been listening somewhat obsessively and last week had the fortuitous opportunity to attend an event showcasing artists from Manitoba and featuring Boniface!  The new music is a logical (and satisfying) expansion from what I heard two years ago, and the live show has an unexpected confidence that increases the palpable emotion as well as the odds of a spontaneous mid-show dance party.  If you need an advanced listen, check out recent single “Oh My God”, or my favorite song off the album, “Wake Me Back Up” and on Friday, give yourself a Valentine’s Day treat and listen to Boniface.

Leading up to Friday, we have a few other shows celebrating new releases including JP Saxe at The Echo and The Lone Bellow’s two nights at The Troubadour. For Valentine’s Day we have two evenings at The Peppermint Club with Evan + Zane celebrating both the lovers (Friday) and anti-lovers (Saturday).

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/3-2/9

T-1 week until The Oscars and I realized that I had seen none of the Best Picture nominees. I did my best to remedy that this weekend and now I’m down to three (considering that I will not watch 1917). Favorite so far is Jojo Rabbit, but I also enjoyed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood more than anticipated. I would say that a week gives me plenty of time to watch three movies, but it’s also a packed music week and you know what will win out there.  As for top picks we’ve got Dermot Kennedy, Mondo Cozmo, The Rescues and a few opportunities to get sneak peaks at SXSW picks Ryan McMullan, Almost Monday and Begonia.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/27-2/2

Goodness, this year is flying by! I’ve already lost track of my show count, am knees deep in SXSW artists and am currently on my second travel adventure of 2020, a quick trip to the Vegas area for a baby shower (a statement that has given me some fun looks). I’m on this adventure road-trip style to break in my new car. Hopefully all goes well.

Next week, I’m absolutely thrilled to have a ticket to see writer/actor/comedian Josh Thomas workshop his new stand-up show, Whoopsie Daisy. You may know Josh from his new show on Freeform, Everything’s Gonna Be Okay (which is fantastic!), but I know him best from one of my very favorite television shows, Please Like Me! Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/20-1/26

The exciting news is that people are gathering at my place tomorrow to celebrate the long weekend by attempting to make our own boba! I picked up some pumpkin juice from Hogsmeade today thinking boba + pumpkin juice is going to make a great pairing.

Speaking of obsessions, I have been listening on repeat to the Hadestown soundtrack since getting back from New York City where I saw the production on Broadway. As grand fortune would have it, next week the woman behind the music of Hadestown, Anais Mitchell, is in Los Angeles with her folk trio, Bonny Light Horseman (playing Lodge Room Tuesday night). If you want to take it a step further into my Hadestown obsession, the Hayden Triples, who sang as The Fates in the original 2010 recording (along with Anais Mitchell) are also in town for a record release Friday Night. What fantastic timing!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/13-1/19

I returned this afternoon from a successful, music/friends/boba-filled few days in New York City. Best discoveries were a love of Flushing, Queens (land of bubble tea and Chinese food) and new ways to get discount Broadway tickets (Jagged Little Pill standing seat for the win!).  Other highlights include my first Broadway play (Grand Horizons), New York style pizza, a museum all about dogs and, the impetus for the trip, seeing Hadestown live on Broadway! Anais Mitchell has written captivating songs to relay the Greek myth of Odysseus and Eurydice with a New Orleans flair. Bonus for some amazing vocalists including one of my fave rockers, Reeve Carney, who plays Odysseus. If you’re in NYC, check it out!

Meanwhile, this week in the LA area, the entire industry moves to Anaheim for 4 day of NAMM (the National Association of Music Merchants).  If you’re down there, be sure to check out some of the showcases both inside and outside of the convention center.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/6-1/12

Today, I had the unexpected pleasure of visiting both Hogwarts and The Good Place!  My favorite part of this trip to Universal Studios (my first since living in LA) was definitely the butterbeer, but I found the entire experience of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to be magically immersive.  I even got my wand, which I’m going to put to good use this week casting some spells to make life a little easier.  Things are going to be crazy at work. Plus, we have some truly exciting shows to help kick the new year in the right direction.  KidEyes at The Echo and Jesse and Friends at The Hotel Cafe would be my top picks, but I’ll be out of town for half the week, heading to New York City to see some music over there.

Kristen’s 2019 Music Mix: B-Sides

Because one album’s worth of songs describing my year is never really enough, here are some B-Sides:

.

  1. Deal Casino – “French Blonde” – A little quirky and a lot of awesome, this band with two Joes knows how to rock. Spent a bit of their unexpected UK tour with them, so clearly bonded for life.
  2. Donna Missal – “Girl” – Donna Missal is an inspiration. The message of this song I find particularly relevant.
  3. Avril Lavigne – “Head Above Water” I saw Avril Lavigne at The Grammy Museum and she blew me away playing songs from her new record (as well as a few oldies). This song was put on repeat.
  4. Jamie N Commons – “Heartbreak” – one of my favorite voices released a new EP, Fever Dreams.
  5. The Wrecks – “Freaking Out” – A music mix would not be complete without a song from my boys, The Wrecks, who I didn’t get to see as much this year aside from a dynamic set at the beach.
  6. Frank Turner – “The Lioness” – Frank Turner can do no wrong. His intimate storytelling tour in support of his album, No Man’s Land, was a departure from his usual mosh-inducing sing-alongs, but one of the most memorable and inspiring shows of the year.
  7. Matt Nathanson – “Used to Be” – I unexpectedly found myself at a Matt Nathanson show this year, reminding me of how brilliant (and fun) this artist was, and continues to be.

  8. SUR – “Only Road” – New SUR music! Must listen!
  9. Maverick Sabre – “Let Me Go” – 2010: The year I discovered Maverick Sabre 2019: the year I finally saw him live. Also, the show at which I got to play with a new camera phone (Pixel 3).
  10. Meg & Dia – “Lit Match” – Another old favorite reunites! Their show at The Troubadour was full of nostalgia, but they also released new music this year (Happysad) and this one got me.
  11. Dermot Kennedy – “Dancing Under Red Skies” – I love everything about Without Fear, Dermot Kennedy’s debut full length album. Here’s a deeper cut that I kept coming back to.
  12. Feeder – “Feeling a Moment” – I hadn’t thought about this band in years until I had the opportunity to see them in the UK. I took the opportunity and was transported back in time. Definitely felt that moment.
  13. Dean Lewis – “Half A Man” – Dean Lewis has come a long way since I saw him play The Moroccan Lounge a couple of years ago. With the release of A Place We Knew, I had the pleasure of seeing him several times this year, including a headlining gig at The Wiltern.

  14. Charlotte OC – “Satellite” (acoustic) – Charlotte OC came back into my life in 2019, reminding me that this powerful and passionate singer is one to watch.
  15. Barns Courtney – “99” – Regardless the stage, Barns Courtney will give his all. This year I saw him rock both The Fonda and a small Christmas event in Pasadena. He also released a new album, The 404.
  16. The Hunna – “IGHTF” – 2019 was a quieter year for The Hunna, but they released this song which was SUCH a crowd pleaser at the show they played at The Fonda.
  17. Tones and I – “Johnny Run Away” – This may be the artist I’m most looking forward to seeing in 2020.
  18. Joseph – “Fighter” – The harmonies on this alone make it a standout on the most excellent 2019 release from this sister trio (Good Luck, Kid).
  19. K.Flay – “Good News” – K.Flay has come a long way, this year releasing a new album (Solutions) and headlining The Wiltern!
  20. Banners – “Supercollide” – From the 2019 album Where The Shadow Ends, this guy continues to be one of the nicest and most talented around.
  21. Meg Mac – “Didn’t Wanna Get So Low But I Had To” – 2019: The year I finally saw Meg Mac!
