October is now upon us; post-season baseball, anticipation of cooler weather that doesn’t quite come as soon as expected, and THE busiest month for shows in the entire year (they don’t call it Rocktober for nothing).  Ushering in the very busy month, we have a packed week of musical options culminating in the one-two punch of Irontom and Reignwolf at The Fonda Theatre Friday night. This is also a fine week to pack your bags and move into The Hotel Cafe except for maybe Wednesday night when you’ll want to get over to The Hi Hat for the final residency night for my favorite LA band, KidEyes!

But before we say goodbye to September, let’s not forget about Monday night when Sam Fender comes to Los Angeles to play a sold out show at The Troubadour. For those not lucky enough to get a ticket, check out the new album, Hypersonic Missiles.  Sam Fender has been one of my top SXSW artists the last two years and I expect big things from the UK talent.

Last week was a 5 shows in 5 nights kind of week which was perfect for numbing against some workplace drama. It ended in a glorious, particularly cathartic, two nights of Gang of Youths at The Roxy.  Today, the good vibes continue as The Cardinals, after a grueling sweep of the Cubs at Wrigley, have made it into post season play for the first time since 2015.  Yay baseball!

I love a good music festival! Yesterday I was at Kaaboo in San Diego. I was mostly excited to see Badflower rock a festival stage, but I also enjoyed Switchfoot and OneRepublic, got nostalgic with Blind Melon and Brian Adams, and, for headliners, (surprisingly) preferred Black Eyed Peas to Dave Matthews Band.

This week we’ve got Gang of Youths (x2!), Yungblud w/ Missio, and the second residency date for KidEyes. It’s going to be a good one!

Here’s something I thought I’d never say…I think I have a favorite brand of candle.  Ever since I was gifted a Cleveland Snow scented candle (from Cleveland Candle Co.) in exchange for some cat sitting, I have grown somewhat attached.  SO attached that I found the shop online and ordered another one, as well as the seasonal scent, Ohio Harvest. This feels like extreme behavior, but I’m very pleased with the smells of Cleveland in my apartment.

Although the weather doesn’t feel much like it’s changing, the music calendar is feeling decidedly more fall-esque (read: busy!).  Next week we’ve got Sigrid, Morgxn, Greg Laswell and so many opportunities to discover some new music. Let’s do this!

Having one of those weeks where there is so much to do and it seems like I’m constantly doing something, but at the same time nothing is getting done…and I still have one more work-related item that needs to be finished “by Monday”, so we’ll keep this short. It’s not all bad, however; saw some great music last week, the Cardinals are on a tear, and I’m in the middle of the best book I’ve read in years (more on that later I’m sure)!

As for next week, another weekend, another summertime festival. This one brings headliners Cold War Kids and Phantom Planet to Golden Road Brewing. I wouldn’t miss it!

Exhaustion is the primary word I’d use to describe last week, but a successful exhaustion I suppose. Lot of movement with and presentations for projects at work, checked out quite a few new bands, and managed to catch a fair bit of both Echo Park Rising AND the Hermosa Beach Summer Series (The Wrecks for the wiiin!).  By the time Friday came around, a mechanic was trying to describe assumedly important “car stuff” to me and I had to stop him mid-sentence because no matter how simplified his explanation (he was even attempting a drawing), my brain was not going to process it in any sensical fashion.
