I am heading out of town to spend Thanksgiving with a friend of 20+ years (definitely counts as family). Do you ever have one of those weeks when so many little things go wrong that you get the strong impression that you are not meant to leave your bed?  Like you go to Starbucks and order a chai tea latte only to take a sip and discover they put coffee in it.  Or you try to run a 10 minute errand and get stuck in traffic for an hour.  Or how about when an oil change takes almost 4 hours even though you have an appointment. I’ve spent a lot of time catching up with various people this week. My day to day has felt a bit unstable lately and it’s so grounding to chat with friends who aren’t a part of that.  Unfortunately, this means that my to do list is expanding rather than shrinking and I’m sitting here wondering just how long my car’s oil change light can be on before it becomes a real problem…

Halloween is upon us once again. I will be spending mine participating in some workplace shenanigans and a very special day-long High Voltage game event at Meltdown Comics.  I come into the ghoulish week motivated by a weekend spent at LA Comic Con where I had the privilege of seeing my favorite witch, Sabrina Spellman (of the formally teenage variety) AND two of my favorite zombies, Liv Moore and Blaine DeBeers (iZombie).  I also met a vampire, Jasper Hale (Twilight)!

This week, I’m looking forward to the rare west coast appearance of NEEDTOBREATHE as well as returning to the Moroccan Lounge to see Banners.  Maybe this time I’ll make it in time to try something off the delicious sounding happy hour food menu.

I’ve had a very work-centric weekend.  I spent some time in a clinic getting a new research study off the ground, I joined a community service project that took me back to my gardening days,  I went to support some coworkers manning a company booth at a dance event (where I ended up trying an aerial silk workout),  and I made progress on a presentation that I hope to give at some point next week.  Now it’s about to be Monday and I feel like I need a weekend!

Thankfully, there are plenty of events to look forward to next week, most notably my favorites, The Wrecks, rocking out at the Moroccan Lounge and and evening at The Hotel Cafe with a Butch Walker cover band called Dieter Von Conth & The Throat Rippers that will consist of people who bear a striking resemblance to Butch Walker and his band…

Wishing I was in Fresno today. Nothing But Thieves is playing Fresno tonight. I have been obsessed with the band’s second album, Broken Machine, so much so that I saw them in LA and San Diego this week. The original plan was just to see them in San Diego, but I felt drawn to the El Rey Thursday night.  I knew I made the right decision when, running from another show, I found the best parking spot straight away. I was also able to pick up the physical album which made the drive to San Diego (right after the El Rey show mind you) quite the party.

Lots of great shows next week, but I am particularly looking forward to Parade of Lights at The Peppermint Club, the perfect excuse to check out the new-ish venue!

You know it’s been far too long since you’ve seen an artist play when you’re at the show and they break out an “old tune” that you still consider to be one of the newer ones.  That’s what happened to me Saturday night when I went to see Garen (AKA Kill The Alarm) at The Hotel Cafe.  The whole experience was a blast from the past as Garen was a favorite from my college days.  Thankfully, word on the street is that Garen will be moving to LA next year so hopefully my old vs new song classification will be more accurate in the near future.

We’ve got some tough choices to make next week, music-wise, mostly of the singer-songwriter vs. rock show variety.  Wednesday night, however, is the last night of Zane Carney’s residency at Black Rabbit Rose before he heads off to Europe. Don’t miss out on that one.
