This week, I made it out 6/7 nights for shows, all of which got high marks. I guess you could say that my April is off to a good start! Between this week and last, I’ve got over half the rainbow of wristbands riding up my arm from the El Rey alone. In addition to the music, inspired by watching the pilot episode of A Discovery of Witches TV series at WonderCon, I’ve plunged into a re-read of the book series upon which the television show is based.  It is very rare to find a character whose life I connect with so well, but the historian/academic central protagonist is written into a world in which I feel instantly familiar…even with the witches, vampires, and daemons….

While I hope to get in more reading this week, the call of the live show is strong.  I’m particularly eyeing Tuesday night which holds quite a list of musical options including Ben Rector who is headlining at The Theatre at Ace Hotel.  This really is blowing my mind as it feels like it was just yesterday that Ben’s early set at The Hotel Cafe started one of the grandest of my grand musical adventures.

I have a weird sense of humor. And by that, I mean I don’t find funny the things a lot of other people find funny.  This was the topic of conversation at my department meeting last week.  When asked for an example of something I would laugh at, I busted out a video of Joey Ryan explaining the history of the ampersand in the middle of The Milk Carton Kids show.  I am SO ready to laugh this Monday at Largo as The Milk Carton Kids present the Sad Songs Comedy Hour!  It’s the start of a big week.  Hopefully I’ll be ready. Tomorrow begins another journey to Austin for that magical week that is SXSW Music.  Combining my two greatest passions, live music and research, I can’t wait to hit the ground running (sometimes literally) from venue to venue discovering all the up and coming bands from around the world.

I went to a fiber arts brunch today to catch up with some friends. People were knitting socks and sweaters, crocheting hats, sewing bags…I crafted this concert calendar!  It was lovely to have some quality chat time, especially since there seems to be a lot on my mind lately in the vein of workplace frustrations.  I am very much looking forward to getting away in a week for SXSW. Oscar Night! I don’t have a clear favorite this year, but excited (as always) to see who will end up the big winners.  The big winner last week was clearly long-time band love, Badflower, whose debut album, OK, I’m Sick, was released to chart topping success and a killer live show at The El Rey.  It’s rare to find a band whose new material continues to inspire, but these guys have reached new heights (and a new audience it seems) with an incredibly contemporary album that absolutely rocks.  I’ll need to see them again ASAP as they neglected to play my new favorite Badflower song, “Wide Eyes”.

The exciting shows continue next week with more favorite bands and several opportunities to check out newer artists.  Show pick of the week must go to Lukas Graham at The Grammy Museum.  Speaking of Lukas Graham, it looks like their big show at The WIltern has been rescheduled to October.
