Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/10-11/16

This past week was just a blur. This could have something to do with the 16 bands I ended up seeing (most of which were new to me). Or perhaps I’ll attribute it to my intense week at work preparing for a big conference I’m going to next week. The mental fog that I’m currently sitting in, however, is most likely due to lack of sleep and the sheer exhaustion brought about by the previous two activities in combination.

As for next week, I’ll largely be out of town, but there are plenty of great shows for you! My show pick is Neulore at The Hotel Cafe on Tuesday. I met this Nashville-based band at SXSW, and have wanted to see them play ever since. Listen to their song, “Shadow of a Man” and you’ll hear why.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/3-11/9

I am particularly grateful for Daylight Savings this year. Last night’s epic Dead Sara show at The Viper room left me completely spent, emotionally and physically. It took me a bit this morning to even begin to emerge from the post show haze. That extra hour of sleep was necessary!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/13-10/19

Culture Collide is coming! This festival, based in the Echo Park area and with an emphasis on international bands, is one of my favorites. It’s always a good vibe and I usually walk away with a new band or two to add to my “must see” list. I have yet to listen to all of the bands, but SXSW pick We Met Tomorrow are playing several sets and I hope to make all of them! For more information on who’s playing, set times, locations, and ticket sales: http://www.culturecollide.com/festivals/losangeles/

Otherwise, we’ve got another great week of music ahead. Zane Carney continues his must-see residency at The Hotel Cafe, UK buzz band, Catfish and The Bottlemen hit the Echo before going back home to a string of sold out shows, and, speaking of sold out shows, Hozier is in town. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/6-10/12

This week, I found myself at a most thrilling baseball game. It was Cardinals/Dodgers and although I have nothing against The Dodgers, The Cardinals are my team and this particular game ended in my team’s favor. I went to the game with someone who knows a lot more about sports than I do and we had an interesting conversation comparing and contrasting the athletic industry with the music industry. One observation discussed was that in sports, the most talented players tend to actually get to the top, whereas the most talented musicians often remain in obscurity while lesser quality players rise due to other, qualities like personality, marketing, connections, etc.

Something to think about…

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/29-10/5

Last weekend was the rock fest (SSMF). This weekend I had the pleasure of attending Way Over Yonder at The Santa Monica Pier. The event is put on by the people who do the Newport Folk Festival and was headlined by the likes of Jackson Browne and Lucinda Williams. I’m still processing all of my pictures, but a full recap of the event will be posted shortly. For a preview, my three new must see acts: Bootstraps, Joe Pug, and The Lone Bellow.

Next week, so many great musical options. Lots of favorites in the mix: Sir Sly, Meg Myers, K.Flay, Irontom, but don’t miss out on Danish singer-songwriter, Tina Dico playing two sets at The Hotel Cafe Thursday night.

Here are all my picks:

Monday: Sir Sly w/ Wolf Gang and Secret Someones at The El Rey (7:30)
ALSO: Meg Myers and Royal Blood at The Troubadour (8pm)
ALSO: The Watkins Family Hour w/ Dan Wilson and Susanna Hoffs at Largo (8:30)
ALSO: Sam Smith w/ Broods at Greek Theatre (7:30)
ALSO: Ivory DeVille, Bones Muhroni FREE at The Satellite (10pm)
ALSO: Fenech-Soler FREE at The Echo (11pm)
