Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 7/7-7/13

I started reading The Death Cure today. For those of you who don’t know, that’s the third book in The Maze Runner series. I read The Maze Runner based on a recommendation. I tend to like those dystopian novels. The Maze Runner was not my favorite, but I was invested enough in the characters to go to the end of the seemingly short tome. Then I reached the end and realized that it was not the end at all and that it was just book one in a three book trilogy! At this point, there was no turning back so I’ve spent the last few weeks existing in this treacherous universe where you constantly question the point of your own existence. I guess this is not really too far from graduate school, but I’ll be happy to finish off this book, hopefully get some closure, and move on.

Last week was fantastically show-heavy, highlighted by sets from White Sea, The Kin, Sean Watkins, and Semi Precious Weapons. I also discovered a few new artists to keep tabs on like LA’s Roméo Testa and San Digeo’s The Midnight Pine. This week will probably be show-lite for me, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of great things going on around town.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar 6/23-6/29

Last Friday I actual took a day off *gasp* to head out to Pomona and go to Warped Tour. My full recap will be posted later this week, but it was a much needed (albeit overly hot) mini-vacation that left me musical re-charged and with an extreme craving for lemonade. Another musical highlight was my involvement with High Voltage Radio Hour where we chatted with our special guests from OK Go about their new video, time with the Muppets, and upcoming album. You can listen to that interview as well as our stellar musical selections here: http://iamhighvoltage.com/2014/06/22/good-writings-transpose-you/

This week is your last chance to see French Style Furs (Cold War Kids + Barcelona) for their June residency at The Satellite. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 6/16-6/22

Work was particularly headache-inducing this week, but life was balanced out nicely with some fabulous musical adventures. They included dinner with the High Voltage crew at Dani Shay’s, an intimate Charli XCX showcase, a drop by casa de Semi Precious Weapons, a classic evening on the Sunset Strip that included Irontom and a run-in with the singer of The Neighbourhood, and two trips to The Hotel Cafe to see new band loves for the first time (Penny & Sparrow and Levi Weaver). I suppose I have absolutely nothing to complain about!

Speaking of High Voltage, show pick of the week is our show Wednesday at Silverlake Lounge featuring the aforementioned (and uber talented) Dani Shay.  Warped Tour also comes through So-Cal this week. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 6/2-6/8

I’ve been doing a lot of “career” work this week, bulking up the Linkedin, going on job sites to see what’s available, making lists of my skills, etc. I go back and forth between being excited and panicked, thinking I’ve accomplished a lot and wondering what I’ve done with my life. I actually got a headache this week which is a rare thing for me…it’s hard to stare into the future when it’s so fuzzy!

At least I have my short term music plan worked out. This week brings some exciting shows at The Hotel Cafe (Max Collins, Curtis Peoples, Penny & Sparrow, etc.). I’m also looking forward to seeing Chicago rockers Empires Monday night at Bardot.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/26-6/1

Music and memories often go hand in hand. I have certain artists that I associate with particular traumas in my life because they were playing at the time of the incident. For example, Sheryl Crow goes with that time I got run off the highway in rural PA and Fall Out Boy is paired with the time someone smashed into my car in South Carolina (completely his fault, but of course my car was totaled). I added a new one to the list this week. James Blunt will now forever be associated with that time I fainted at a show. Before anyone asks, I am okay. At least I feel okay now. It’s just kind of sad that I’ll never be able to listen to Back to Bedlam again without feeling a little woozy.

So, last week didn’t go exactly as anticipated, but here’s to hoping this week doesn’t have any similar surprises. There are several great show options this week, especially on Wednesday, but show pick of the week must go to Irontom who are playing along with The Janks Tuesday night at Townhouse & The Del Monte in Venice.

Here are the rest of my picks. Happy Memorial Day!
