Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/5-5/11

This past week, well, it was a week. Full of highs and lows and more emotional turmoil than I’m comfortable with. Fortunately, I feel like the universe was looking out for me by presenting me with some fabulous musical opportunities/escapes. I saw one of the best shows of my year with Augustana at The Troubadour, I danced with Franz Ferdinand and reveled in special acoustic sets from Youngblood Hawke and All-American Rejects. I rocked out to Irontom, caught up with Tournament of Hearts, and got the opportunity to chat with Ryan Daly from Parade of Lights and Max Collins from Eve 6.

Speaking of Max, he has a solo album coming out this week and a residency this month at The Viper room with Jody Porter (Fountains of Wayne). Also, of note this week, Dead Sara begins their tour of LA venues. I heard them practicing yesterday and they are ready to tear up the town. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/28-5/4

I spent most of the weekend at work (in fact I’m sitting at my desk right now), so it hasn’t felt much like a weekend, but I’m surrounded by music and heavily creamed tea and a seemingly endless supply of bagels so I’m not really complaining. My playlist today has featured the likes of The Head and The Heart, new material from NEEDTOBREATHE, Augustana, and Paolo Nutini, and a couple songs by Highasakite that I’ll just put on repeat (new obsession!).

As usual, we’ve got some great shows this week. My show pick for the week is the incredibly intriguing double headliner of All American Rejects and Youngblood Hawke at The El Rey Thursday night. I wouldn’t necessarily expect these bands on the same bill, but what they do have in common are amazing live energy and performance so it’s going to be a great night. Come early and catch openers like In the Valley Below and The Lonely Wild. It’s a charity event so also come to support the fight against Lyme Disease.

I was not in a good mood last week due to some frustrating computer issues. The best way to turn my mood around is to spend an evening at my favorite music venue, The Hotel Cafe, so Friday night I ventured to Hollywood and spent 5 hours absorbed in the music and the people and I came out the other end feeling like a completely different person. Watching The Spectacular Now…again. I was at Best Buy for something else and realized I had money on a gift card so I splurged on one of my favorite films from last year. I’m currently watching with the director’s commentary which I always find insightful. It’s just such an honest movie. The characters are unexpected, but real. More movies like this, please!

As for music, we’ve got some good choices for you this week. Mosco Rosco (formally Harper Blynn) start their Monday night residency at The Satellite. I’m very interested in what their new sound is going to be.  However, show pick of the week goes to a young Brit, Nina Nesbitt who is playing an early show at Bootleg on Thursday. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/21-4/6

Yesterday, I became a radio DJ with High Voltage radio hour on The Independent FM. It was quite the experience! We’ll be doing a show every Saturday 6-7, so bookmark here and tune in (http://www.streamlicensing.com/stations/independent/listen.html). This week, I selected tracks by The Kin, Dear Boy, Parade of Lights, and the band that started it all, Pepper’s Ghost (that last one was a particular thrill).

Speaking of the band whose demise broke my heart, two of its members are in town this week playing with War on Drugs. My other picks this week are Betty Who also at The Troubadour (she’s fantastic!) and the killer line-up at The Satellite on Friday that includes The Record Company, The Janks, and Ume.

But really, that’s just the start of the great musical options. Here are the rest!:

Monday: The Strypes with Dinosaur Pile Up at El Rey Theatre (9pm)
ALSO: The Eagle Rock Gospel Singers FREE at The Satellite (11pm)
ALSO: Moses Sumney FREE at Bootleg Theater (11pm)
