Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 7/7-7/13

I started reading The Death Cure today. For those of you who don’t know, that’s the third book in The Maze Runner series. I read The Maze Runner based on a recommendation. I tend to like those dystopian novels. The Maze Runner was not my favorite, but I was invested enough in the characters to go to the end of the seemingly short tome. Then I reached the end and realized that it was not the end at all and that it was just book one in a three book trilogy! At this point, there was no turning back so I’ve spent the last few weeks existing in this treacherous universe where you constantly question the point of your own existence. I guess this is not really too far from graduate school, but I’ll be happy to finish off this book, hopefully get some closure, and move on.

Last week was fantastically show-heavy, highlighted by sets from White Sea, The Kin, Sean Watkins, and Semi Precious Weapons. I also discovered a few new artists to keep tabs on like LA’s Roméo Testa and San Digeo’s The Midnight Pine. This week will probably be show-lite for me, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of great things going on around town.

New Music Tuesday 7/1/14 f. Red Wanting Blue

New music recommendations as follows:

Red Wanting Blue – Little America

The newest album from Midwestern rockers Red Wanting Blue is an enjoyable listen. At the forefront are the vocals of Scott Terry with their grainy texture that gives the tunes an instant sense of comfort whether they are slow and contemplative or more light and humorous. My favorite aspect of this album is the lyrics which relay both a depth and humor and have really given me something to latch onto, making me both smile and think.

Little America starts with the celebratory “Halleujah”, setting the tone for the album with a lightness betrayed by words like “We’re lost I’m sure of it. I don’t know if we’ll ever be found. So we’ll run from town to town to make our way home.” Themes of being on the road, change, and relationships impacted by the musician’s life make the album feel very personal and give it an emotional charge. The heart of the album is found in the three tracks I’ve been playing on repeat. “The Rest of Our Lives” is an inspiring and reflective tune packaged in a compelling rock melody. “Leaving New York” is a slow and yearning lament that speaks to anyone who has had to leave a place they’ve fallen in love with. “Black Canyon” is another bittersweet anthem about life on the road, but it does the best job at pulling at my heartstrings and contains my favorite line in the album, “children don’t look down, count on the ground being there every time”.

Before you think the album is too heavy, turn to songs like “Dumb Love” or “Drawing Board” which is a song about figuring out life, but sung as country-ish knee slapper with cute lines like “success requires one of us to bring home the bacon.”

Little America is an album for contemplation, but enjoyable on several levels. Here’s the video for a fun little ditty “You Are My Las Vegas” which features the mothers of the band members.

Happy Monday friends! It’s a grey day from where I’m currently sitting but that’s no reason to feel gloomy. This is the last week of the Del Mar Fair, excuse me, San Diego County Fair. I’m hoping to go one more time on Wednesday and ride some rides and watch Lit play that evening. We also have the Beatles Under Cover night tonight at the Office Bar with tons of people from local San Diego bands. Summer is in full swing. Last week was Warped Tour, today was a baseball game, next week is 4^th of July. I am quite excited about the 98.8 block party which has a great line-up with headliners, Semi Precious Weapons. If you’re going, be sure to go early enough to catch Brick + Motor. I sampled them at SXSW and look forward to catching an entire set from the up-and-comers from New Jersey.

Warped Tour Pomona 6/20/14

Living in Los Angeles, seasons are not demarcated as much by changes in temperature or what is falling from the sky. Instead of spring, summer, winter, and fall my seasons are SXSW, festival season, Rocktober, and end of year music mix-making season. Currently we are smack dab in the middle of festival season. Finances are restricting my full participation in this most joyous of seasons, but happy circumstance and good friends lead me to the Fairplex at Pomona last Friday for one of my favorite festivals, Warped Tour! This year felt a bit different for me. Instead of running around in the hot sun like a maniac trying to catch every single band I sampled and found promising, I focused on a select few. It was a year of celebrating firsts and lasts and I wanted to share a few highlights.

My favorite first: Queen Caveat

My LA band love, Queen Caveat knows how to rock so it makes sense that they would find themselves invited to take the Warped stage. I have experienced several firsts with this band and I did not want miss seeing them play their first Warped tour. The trek out to Pomona and suffering through the heat, crowds, and a few questionable musical offerings was all made worth it seeing the crowds mesmerized by the four-piece, particularly fierce front-woman, Lauren Little who drew people in by offering to share her water (smart move on a hot day). My favorite new fan had to be the front man for Japanese band, One OK Radio who had just played the adjacent stage. After greeting some fans, he stuck around and watched Queen Caveat’s entire set from backstage. Can we say One OK Radio/Queen Caveat tour through Japan?!?

My last dance with Anberlin

After Warped Tour, Anberlin are doing one massive farewell tour and then are calling it quits. I saw Anberlin play Warped Tour back in 2007 in Atlanta and remember after their set standing in a looong line to get their album, Cities, signed. I’ve seen them a handful of times, but that moment, was one of my favorites. I found it fitting to see them one more time at Warped Tour. The band came out blasting “Feel Good Drag” and I was instantly reminded how incredibly dynamic and infectious they are. I smiled ear to ear as they played several of their older tunes, brining me back to ages and Warped Tours past. I’m really going to miss this band…

The end of the moshing era

Signs prominently displayed on all the major stages emphasized the seriousness of Warped policy against moshing and crowd surfing. While I certainly appreciate this effort (and yes, it was enforced), it definitely changed the dynamic of the event which in my mind has always been closely associated with massive circle pits and rowdy crowds. While I still observed a few crowd surfers, there was no band that egged it on. Gone are the days of trying to set records for crowd surfing or mosh attendance. Although I didn’t really see any of the uber aggressive hardcore bands, I’m left wondering how those fans are celebrating that music, if not by shoving into one another…

Other notables from the event

K.Flay – I’ve been a fan of this Bay area indie hip hop artist for a few years now, but when I heard her new album Life As A Dog, I started craving another K.Flay show so I was thrilled that she was on the bill for Warped this year. Her unique style which, as best as I can describe, is a slowed down vibey hip hop, is a great fit for Warped which, despite what some people might think, does a great job at covering an array of genres.

Bayside– Bayside is one of those bands that take me on a journey through memory lane. I only caught a bit of their set, but I love their high energy performance.

The Acoustic Basement– The Acoustic Basement is one of my favorite parts of Warped Tour. I was slightly dismayed this year when I realized that I wasn’t the only one with that sentiment. Just about every time I wanted to sample an artist in that tent, I could barely even see the tops of heads through the crowd. If I could do multiple days of Warped, I would spend one just sitting in this tent all day. I discovered some great new names this year including Nick Santino, Rob Lynch, and Front Porch Step. And as long as we’re discussing acoustic acts, I also quite enjoyed This Wild Life.

One Ok Radio– These guys played right before Queen Caveat so I caught most of their set. They were great, but what really surprised me were their fans. For a band I hadn’t heard of before, they had quite the devoted audience.

New Music Tuesday 6/24/14 f. K.Flay, My Goodness

K.Flay – Life As A Dog

K. Flay is like none other. She crafts lyrics like a hip hop artist and has no problem conquering the straight up rap style, but she couples this with slowed down indie synth beats and adds a punk-rock edge to create a unique sonic experience. Life As A Dog is her newest album, self-released with the help of a Pledge Music campaign. This is the kind of record that is easy to get lost in with its lazy beats and K. Flay’s laid back, transfixing vocal. My favorite tracks are the somewhat more punchy “I’m Good” and the single, “Thicker Than Dust”, an anthem of friendship which feels lyrically relevant and has me singing along by the second chorus. I’m always in the market for something refreshing and compelling, and this album is just that. I highly recommend you checking it out!

My Goodness – Shiver + Shake

I’ve been looking forward to more from this band since I heard their single, “Cold Feet Killer” last year. Listening to the stream of this album, I hear everything you might want from a promising rock band. They’ve got the punch, the guitars, the bluesy accents, the howling vocal, the beats that make you want to bang your head and move your feet…more of this in my ears please!

Yesterday was the first time in about a year that I took my horse in a jump show. Honestly, I don’t remember feeling so tired and sore after a long day out in the sun. Thankfully, I was able to unwind in the evening with a lovely sold out show from The Milk Carton Kids. Today will be spent in recovery mode for me especially because getting off the couch is a difficult thing for me to do right now.
