2013 was another excellent year for music. I put together a little mix of some of the songs and artists that meant something to me this year. Enjoy!

I was leaving Warped Tour for the day, when I happened to walk by the stage where this Australian band was playing and I was drawn in by their performance and their songs and the way singer, Jenna McDougall, dominated the audience. When their album, The Other Side, came out in September, this song stuck out as an instant favorite. I was slightly disappointed when the band failed to play “The Other Side” when I saw them again at The Roxy later in the year.

Out of the ashes of band love, Scarlet Grey, came Dear Boy. This is another one of my bands of 2013. I have been to most of the shows that this band has ever performed in the US. They released their very first EP in September and yours truly merited a thank you in the liner notes. This is a first for me so needless to say, I’m terribly excited and incredibly grateful to know such wonderful and talented people. “Come Along” was my first introduction to the sound of Dear Boy and I knew instantly it would make an appearance on this mix.

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with The 1975. When I saw them live, I was not impressed…at all. But then their album came out and this song somehow became my most played song on iTunes of 2013. It’s a great get up and start the day with some dancing tune.

Sir Sly is another of my favorite 2013 discoveries. From their February residency at The Echo to their packed headlining show in November, this band has come together and matured at an alarming rate. They have the songs, they have the performance, and they even have that air of mystery. I anticipate great things from Sir Sly so pay attention!

I adore Meg Myers. This year she tantalized us with this single, the show stopping “Heart Heart Head”.  She is one of those artists that has the ability to take you to another place with her music and live performance. I had the pleasure of seeing her perform a couple times this year. Meg Myers is unforgettable.

I’ve been a causal Gin fan for a few years, but this summer at Warped Tour was the first time I was able to see her live and I really connected with her music and brand of girl power. If I were a singer, I’d wear comfy t-shirts and shorts while my band dressed in suits and ties. Seriously, “everybody’s doing it so why the hell should I”

One of my 2012 discoveries released their debut album this year and I continue to be in love with their brand of rock n’ roll. Despite their British home, the trio spent a lot of time in the US this year and I had some fun adventures with them in both LA and Austin.
