New Music Tuesday 5/21/13 featuring 30 Seconds to Mars, Willy Moon, New Politics

Posted on by Amanda

Since Kristen is a bit indisposed this week, I’m filling in for her weekly New Music Tuesday post. This is also why it’s a few days late. While I haven’t had time to sample everything listed below, I can tell you that we are in the prime time for some awesome new music. Sample and enjoy!

30 Seconds to Mars– Love Lust Faith + Dreams

I bought this on pre-order because I have a bit of a soft spot for this band. From rather humble beginnings they have amassed a huge following. What I like even more is their ever evolving sound. Below is the music video for their single Up In The Air.

Willy Moon– Here’s Willy Moon

I remember Willy Moon from his catchy Apple ad and his crazy dance moves and awesome energy during SXSW. His debut album has finally been released in the states! If you’re up for a blended drink of old and new, check this out.

New Politics – A Bad Girl in Harlem

I’m not super familiar with this band but their single Harlem makes me dance in my car and that’s all I really care about sometimes. Their video is here and if you hop on their site, you can listen to the whole album. Try before you buy!

Also:

  • Emma Louise- vs. Head vs. Heart
  • The National – Trouble Will Find Me
  • Airbourne – Black Dog Barking
  • Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa – Seesaw
  • Winery Dogs – Winery Dogs
  • The Spring Standards – live album
  • JC Broooks and The Uptown Sound

I’m noticing how I start off every post talking about the weather. At least, I have been the last few times. In keeping with tradition, the weather is a wonderfully sunny 85 degrees outside. It’s been pleasant all weekend but all I’ve wanted to do lately is sleep. Maybe it’s because I’m finally done with school or maybe it has to do with being out 3 times in a row last week. I have to say that Friday night’s Jimmy Eat World and IAMDYNAMITE show was pretty epic. I’m smitten with IAMDYNAMITE and despite not being super familiar with Jimmy Eat World’s discography, I had a blast watching them play. Such good times. New Music Tuesday 5/14/13 featuring Cary Brothers, Better Looking People With Superior Ideas

Posted on by Amanda

I haven’t had much time this week to give many of these a listen, but just in case, you’re looking for some new tunes, here’s what I’d recommend…

Cary Brothers – Let Me Be

Cary Brothers has a knack for writing the saddest songs you’ve ever heard. Heartbreak oozes from every note, but Brothers is able to take this and make it beautiful.  I think my favorite is the gorgeous duet, “Disappear” featuring Garrison Starr.

Better Looking People With Superior Ideas – Better Looking People With Superior Ideas

This one was released several months ago, but it just came across my inbox and ears this week, so maybe it’ll be new to you too. The tracks create a very distinct mood…they make me feel like I’m in the middle of watching some obscure art house film about a human falling in love with a robot.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/20-5/26

Posted on by Kristen

This message comes to you from The Mint where I am attending one of the coolest events I’ve been to recently, Overture Con. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of hanging out with Bad Wolf, Cadaver Dogs, Queen Caveat, and Semi Precious Weapons. There were informative panels about DIY activities, fashion in music, etc. plus some exclusive opportunities like a Bad Wolf acoustic performance and an advance listen to the Cadaver Dogs CD (made into an intense drinking game). The focus of the event is to connect super fans like myself to their favorite bands and by the end of the day everyone in attendance felt like family to me. Today promises to be similar with a new set of bands like Honor Society who, as I write this, is talking about the notion of living in a box and detailing the unique smell of their dressing room.

Later today, I will be on a panel talking about my life as a super music fan, part of which includes my obsessive desire to put together these calendars every week in my attempt to spread the music love…speaking of, this week promises to be another good one! I’m thrilled that Irish brotherly duo Hudson Taylor booked another show (Monday at Bardot) and I’m equally pumped about Atlanta’s The Shadowboxers who are finally coming to LA playing The Viper Room on Wednesday.

It’s a scorcher outside! Whew! I’m glad I’m safely back inside with the air conditioning on because it’s kind of miserable out in the sun. Misery can easily be relieved if you chose to venture out to a show. With a cold drink in your hand and some tunes for your ears, you should be doing just fine. Unless the place you’re at decided not to turn on any air. I’ve been there. It’s not fun.
