Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/26-12/2

As the holiday party invitations start to come in, I’m reminded that it’s time to put my end of year music mix together. For those of you who don’t know, every year I make a mix of all the songs and artists that meant something to me over the year…they are usually accompanied by a story and pictures. I work on this all year round, but the hardest part is pulling it together at the end and finding the time to create and produce the final product (aka Christmas gifts!). For this year’s mix, I had the first “rough draft” done for a couple weeks ago and and I’ve since made a few tweaks, but I’m still not 100% happy with it. However, if my first party is in just a couple of weeks, I’ll need to start manufacturing soon! Or maybe I should just accept the fact that my Christmas gifts will be late…again.

And who knows, maybe there will be a show this month that will change my life and alter the mix entirely (December 6th early show at The Satellite, I’m looking at you!). There are plenty of promising options these week. Here are my picks:

A Thank You Note…

The sun is shining, it’s 75 degree outside, I guess that means it’s that time of year again.  And no, I don’t mean Memorial Day weekend.  The holiday season has sneaked up on me this year.  I seriously don’t know where this year went.  Hi! My name is Ashley and Kristen and Amanda have been wonderful enough to let me hijack their blog again.

I work as a therapist for kids/teens with mental health disorders up in Palmdale.  If you don’t know Palmdale, think mountains, desert, Joshua Trees, and lots of poverty.  To bring something bright to the families we work with, we try to give a toy to every client (and siblings when we can) during the Holiday season.  I am an avid music lover.  The local So-cal music scene and I are great buddies.  As part of our “toy” drive, I have asked local and some not so local bands to donate to our clients for the holiday season.  I did this last year and got such a wonderful and inspiring response that I decided to do it again for 2012.  Let me tell you, the scene did not let me down.  So this is my thank you, to all the bands that have graciously donated to my clients. I really appreciate that gifts that you have sent.  I know from previous experience that the teens will really love what they receive and hopefully you’ll have plenty of future fans.  You guys truly rock!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/19-11/25

I can’t believe it’s Thanksgiving week. I wish I could be more excited about it, but since people tend to leave LA for the holidays, there aren’t as many show options. I’d like to say that I’ll be spending the extra time off working on my end of year mix and continuing to fill out my SXSW 2013 spreadsheet, but I will mostly likely be playing catch-up at work. I’m actually quite thankful for the opportunity to do this, so hopefully I’ll be able to make the most of it.

I’m also thankful for a couple notable returns to the scene this week. Josh Kelley back at The Hotel Cafe and Nico Vega returning to the stage after what seems like a very lengthy break. Unfortunately, The No Doubt show that Nico Vega is playing sold out before they were even put on the bill…but just knowing they are playing again makes me happy.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 11/12-11/18

I got out last week for some music *celebration* and I’m feeling much better about life as a result. I saw a couple artists that I have a long history of seeing and it got me thinking a lot about my past and how many amazing musical moments I have had in my life. After seeing The Kin Thursday night, I went back to my picture and video archives to re-visit some of my fondest memories associated with that band (the first time I saw them, the impromptu performance in an alleyway, the hospital incident, the first night I lived in LA, that SXSW adventure, etc). It all made me feel very lucky and it made me realize that I/we will get through all of these more recent tribulations and the memories most indelible will be the good ones, full of love and friends and music.

I’m going to try to stay focused this week, but still hope to get out a time or two. I am very anxious to see the long awaited return of Parade of Lights who are playing Bootleg Bar on Monday night. New Music Tuesday 11/6/12 Featuring Sad Robot, Makeshift Prodigy, Mrnorth

I’m a bit behind on all of this, but hey, better late than never, no? Here’s the new music I’ve been listening to this last week or so…

Sad Robot1.0

I wasn’t able to post about this when it came out, but I’ve been listening to this debut album from LA rockers, Sad Robot for a couple weeks now and I am loving it! With traces of Nico Vega, this female-fronted power trio takes rock to another level, reaching out beyond the tunes to convey a message of hope and strength that is much needed in my life right now. After an October residency at The Silverlake Lounge and song placement in the TV show, Bones, this band seems to be picking up some steam. I am really looking forward to seeing where they will go next.

Makeshift ProdigyIlluminate EP

Chicago’s Makeshift Prodigy made an impact on me a couple years ago with their stirring single, “Alive” off their 2010 album, mathematica.  The band had a new EP come out this week and from what I’ve heard of it, they seem to deliver on the rousing rock anthems that initially caught my ear.

MrnorthThis Isn’t Just Lightening

In 2007, Mrnorth’s album Fear & Desire blew my mind. I think I had “Sleeping Dogs” on repeat for weeks. A couple weeks ago the now NYC-based rock band released a live double album.   I haven’t heard much from this band lately, but I was tickled to see that they had so much new music for me to digest in this double disc live album recorded form. Easy download decision.

  • Rumer – Boys Don’t Cry
  • Kate Rusby – 20

  • Skye –  Back to Now
