New Music Tuesday 1/24 Featuring Ingrid Michaelson, Foxy Shazam, Graffiti6, etc.

I know it’s been awhile since I was able to do one of these, but there are so many wonderful CDs coming out today and I felt it necessary to invest some time into pointing them out. I hope you, in turn, will invest some time into listening! Click on the artist’s name for more info on them and how to get their new CD.

Human AgainIngrid Michaelson

I first heard this CD about a month ago and I have been counting down the days for its release. I’m a huge fan of Ingrid Michaelson and she takes this record to darker places both musically and lyrically and I love it! My full review of the album will be printed in the winter issue of High Voltage Magazine, but suffice it to say, fan or not, I think you should check out this record.

The Church of Rock and RollFoxy Shazam

When I first heard this group (sight unseen) I thought they were being led by a powerful black woman. Imagine my surprise when I found out their lead singer was a diminutive white guy. The surprises are never ending with Foxy Shazam and their newest record, The Church of Rock and Roll, definitely pushes the boundaries of what is expected from a rock band from Ohio. Check them out if you want something refreshing for your ears. And when they come to your town, do NOT miss the opportunity to see them live.

ColoursGraffiti6

I had the pleasure of discovering these Brits at The El Rey last week when they opened for Augustana. They play the kind of music that makes it easy to smile and sway along. I got the CD that night and have been listening to it on repeat. My favorite song is “Free”. I hope it can make you smile as well…

Others I hope to look into:

That blank white page really is filling me with rage this week. My favorite Mumford & Sons tune will have to be performed without me in the audience tomorrow (Monday Oct. 18th) at The Palladium as I will be proctoring an exam that evening. It was quite painful to give away my ticket (purchased during the pre-sale mind you). But, as they say, life goes on…as does the music. With Joe Firstman tonight at the Hotel Cafe and a host of promising acts to fill the week, I’m sure I’ll get by ;).

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/11-10/17

These last couple weeks have been rough. My schedule has been commandeered by a little thing called teaching. In trying to maintain my busy schedule with the additional duties of being a teaching assistant I have managed to get sick again…I suppose the severe lack of sleep might have contributed. Anyway, the dearth of posting will most likely continue until December when my schedule can return to its usual merely busy state.

Unfortunately, this also means I have to cut back on my concert-going…I’m going to aim for a healthy diet of 2-3 shows per week and see if that can get me through. This week I am continuing my kick of going to see artists from the UK (like Biffy Clyro and Tired Pony). Fran Healy is branching out from his band, Travis, to do a solo album. He plays twice this week, once at Bardot and once at The Hotel Cafe (the latter being sold out already). Then on Weds., my last year’s band obsession, Frightened Rabbit, returns to LA to play at The Mayan. But those are only the tip of the ice berg when it comes to great shows going on around town this week. You will all have to double your efforts to go out in my absence. Here’s what I suggest:

Monday: Fran Healy (of Travis) at Bardot (11:30)…RSVP here http://itsaschoolnight.com/
ALSO
: Whispertown and Jessie Baylin at Bootleg (8:30, 10:30)
ALSO: Songwriters in the Round at Room 5 (9pm)

Tuesday: Fran Healy at The Hotel Cafe (7pm)
ALSO: Songwriter Round at Saint Rocke featuring Keaton Simons, Justin Hopkins, and Randy Coleman (8pm)
ALSO: The 88 at The Troubadour (10pm)

ALSO: Macy Gray at The Roxy (8pm)
ALSO: Alice in Chains at Gibson Amphitheater (7:15)
ALSO: The Script at The Wiltern (7:30)
ALSO: Punch Brothers featuring Chris Thile at El Rey (9pm)

Weds: Frightened Rabbit at The Mayan Theater (7pm)

Friday: Nicole Atkins at The Echo (9pm)
ALSO: Mike Doughty at Bootleg (10pm)

Kristen’s Concert Calendar 9/27-10/4

Epicenter was fantastic…fantastically hot. But fun was definitely had as I got to see some of my favorite bands, meet a couple new ones, and see some big groups I never would have seen otherwise. But the lesson of the weekend is definitely one Douglas Adams would approve of: always carry a towel! More on our adventures in Fontana to come.

My fave group of the weekend, Biffy Clyro, is playing Bootleg Theater on Thursday so if you weren’t able to make it to Epicenter over the weekend be sure to venture to Booleg on Thursday. But first, tonight (Monday), Semi Precious Weapons invades the El Rey. This group buts on the most insane show I’ve ever seen and it’s not to be missed.

Kristen’s SXSW ’10 Mix- Part 5

                   18. “New Improved Formula” – Spring Tigers

You may think that this is yet another British band on the list but actually these guys are from Athens, Georgia. Doesn’t mean I still don’t love this song…

                  19. “Butch” – Saint Motel

Last year, I discovered LA bands Nico Vega and Crash Kings and they are now staples in my life and my music calendar. I wonder if this will be the year for another LA band, Saint Motel?

                 20. “Jane Doe”- Never Shout Never

I saw Christopher Drew Ingel (AKA Never Shout Never) at Bamboozled and he definitely stuck out, but I’m not sure if it was in the best way. Then I came across his CD What Is Love? on sale and decided to give it a go. For some reason, I’m now loving it!

               21. “Oh Lord” – Foxy Shazam

Oh to see this performed live…I can only imagine. The perfect way to end any mix.

the end…or is it…?
