So excited by what is going on in LA this week, music-wise. One of my new favorite Brit Bands, Leogun have returned to the area playing shows on Tuesday and Thursday. This along with shows from The Ten Thousand, Sabrosa Purr, Rival Tides, We Were Indians, Sad Robot, and of course the three-day Band of Skulls/Muse combo, suggest this will be a great week to rock out. Let’s do it!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/14-1/20

Only two weeks into the new year and I already have some new band obsessions. Last Friday’s show at The Hotel Cafe with Red Wanting Blue was the most entertaining and energetic show I’ve been to this year. The Ohio-based band doesn’t come to LA that often, but they had the room in a frenzy. They also have great taste in openers as they selected one of my personal favorites, The Young Romans. Since Friday, I have not been able to stop listening to Red Wanting Blue’s albums…except to listen to a few other recent favorites, The Delta Saints’ Red Letter Jubilee (out this Tuesday!), Mother Mother’s recent release, The Sticks, and European duo Boy’s Mutual Friends.

This year is already so musically bountiful!

This upcoming week looks pretty singer-songwriter heavy for me. I think I’m most excited about Saturday at The Roxy. I mean, how many years has it been since Teddy Geiger appeared on that canceled way too soon TV show about the music talent scout played by Tom Cavanaugh? I was instantly drawn to the show and the young promising talent.

Well, life did not that that long to get super overwhelming again. Just about a week into the new year and I’m back in the thick of it all…both the good and the bad. On the good end, there is an abundance of show options this week! It’s hard to say what my top pick/s would be. I’m looking forward to seeing Jonathan Tyler (of Jonathan Tyler and The Northern Lights) on Tuesday at The Hotel Cafe. Actually any day this month at The Hotel Cafe would be a top pick of mine. I hope you all have a great Christmas! I’m not really looking forward to three days of no live music, but I certainly have enough to do to fill the time. If you are on my mailing list, expect a little present later today or tomorrow!!

Speaking of gifts, if you’d like to do something for me, might I suggest helping out some worthy musicians, Danish indie synth-pop trio terminal, in their Pledge Music Campaign. terminal and their music came into my life last fall when I was going through some difficult times and listening to them really helped get me through. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/10-12/16

It’s been an interesting week. Mostly because I haven’t been able to talk now for nearly seven solid days. It really makes you appreciate how valuable one’s voice truly is. This isn’t the first time this has happened. I lost my voice the day my best friend got married and I had to croak out a Maid of Honor speech. I lost my voice in the middle of my teaching a course. Now, I lose my voice when I’ve been given the opportunity to interview the lead singer of my favorite band. You know, I wonder if there is a pattern emerging here…

Anyway, vocal problems aside, I got to see Biffy Clyro last week so life isn’t even remotely close to being bad. I was also treated to KROQ’s Acoustic Xmas last night which meant I got to see some heavy hitters like Garbage, Bush, and Linkin Park as well as personal favorites like Youngblood Hawke, Gaslight Anthem, and The Lumineers. There was also a Gwen Stefani/Gavin Rossdale duet which felt pretty darn special.

Speaking of holiday shindigs, The High Voltage Holiday party is this Tuesday at Silverlake Lounge. We’ve got some great bands, copies of our newest issue, and everyone who comes through the door gets a gift! I’d love to see you all there J

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/29-11/4

Don’t even talk to me about last week. I didn’t get out much. I did manage to have a panic attack or two due to the overwhelming situation I have found myself in at work. Things are not going well on that front. It makes me a bit miserable. I feel like a different person when I’m not out going to shows. I think I might have overcompensated Saturday night when I did get out to see Queen Caveat at The Roxy…I ended up on stage.

This week, I will do my best to get out to at least one or two shows, maintaining what I can of my sanity. I’d highly recommend Tuesday at TRiP to see the last show of my new favorite band, terminal, before they return to Denmark and take with them some serious sunshine.
