Well, I haven’t been able to speak for four days now…yay laryngitis! Being sick is a downright pain. I didn’t make a single show last week. The depression is beginning to sink in, especially since I’m still not 100% (I can kind of croak out some words which is an improvement).

But let’s look forward. The big event this week is High Voltage Magazine’s Fall issue release party on Thursday. Some days you just really need music to get you through. For me, today is one of those days. If you’re also having one of those days (or even if you’re not), here are some videos I’d recommend checking out!

Nothing cheers me up quite like listening to one of my very favorite bands. My love for Pawnshop Roses goes back quite a few years now and this song is quite simply one of the best songs ever created…especially for days like these.

I just saw Lovers Drugs last night and was reminded how much I enjoy this band. I’ve mentioned before the video project they did with their first EP. Here’s the most recent addition for the song “Velvet”. Chronologically it’s the first in the story.

Needtobreathe is one of the bands I’m listening to most right now. I’m slightly obsessed. Here’s a song from their new CD, The Reckoning.

This is just a cool video and I love Mutemath!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/19-9/25

This fall, High Voltage Magazine is coming back with print issues. The cover artist is Fitz & The Tantrums and inside there are interviews, playlists, reviews for new albums and more! I have the privilege of being involved with this project and I’m really excited about it. To raise some funds for the first issue, we have been running a Pledge Music Campaign with part of the proceeds going to The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF.

We have collected rare and unreleased tracks from artists such as The Silent Comedy, Taylor Locke and The Roughs, Billy Morrison, Hurricane Bells, and more. These songs form a High Voltage compilation album that can be obtained at our basic pledge value of $10. Looks to be another busy week ahead…and an especially good one for The Viper Room. I’m more than a little excited to finally see Our Lady Peace perform live…and on such a tiny stage (insert squeals of delight).

I’m also really looking forward to next Friday/Saturday as it is The San Diego Music Thing. It’s basically a mini SXSW in San Diego. Panels on music related topics then evenings crowded with shows, many of them at venues in walking distance from one another. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 8/8-8/14

SOOO many things to be excited about this week. Too many really. The Milk Carton Kids CD release and Nico Vega at Saint Rocke on the same night…it’s like making me choose which of my theoretical children I like more. And throw in John Elliot’s CD release, a rare Matthew Jordan performance, and a stacked line-up at The Hudson block party and well…can I be in like 5 places at once?

Also this week, some of my favorite out-of-state musicians are in LA. Nashville’s Andrew Belle, Philadelphia’s Adam Arcuaragi, and New York City’s Kill the Alarm are all must see performances.

And that’s just the start of all the great acts I’d love to see this week. It’s a good time to be in Los Angeles, that’s for sure! Hope you can all make it out to at least a show or two this week. There are certainly enough great ones to choose from.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar 7/4-7/10

This week has been kinda painful. Let’s just say I hate moving. My mom was in town from Pennsylvania to help with the move. She accompanied me Weds night to the El Rey to see Nightlands and Sondre Lerche THEN she came with me to On the Rox to rock out to Semi Precious Weapons’ last Empire gig…completely with late night dining at The Rainbow Room. We didn’t get home ‘til the wee hours. I just have to say that my mom totally rocks and I am quite lucky to have her.

Because of the move, my last week was a bit light on shows. Hopefully this week I’ll be able to turn it all around. This may be slightly problematic as my car currently doesn’t function properly…but The Silent Comedy is starting a West Coast tour with Saint Motel, hitting up The Casbah (San Diego) on Tuesday, Detroit Bar (Costa Mesa) Weds, LACMA (LA) Thursday, and Velvet Jones (Santa Barbara) on Saturday so…we shall just have to make something work, now won’t we!
