Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/24-12/30

I hope you all have a great Christmas! I’m not really looking forward to three days of no live music, but I certainly have enough to do to fill the time. If you are on my mailing list, expect a little present later today or tomorrow!!

Speaking of gifts, if you’d like to do something for me, might I suggest helping out some worthy musicians, Danish indie synth-pop trio terminal, in their Pledge Music Campaign. terminal and their music came into my life last fall when I was going through some difficult times and listening to them really helped get me through. I’ve become a big fan and would love to see them succeed in their goal of raising funds to record some music. At any rate, go check them out, download some of their music (for free!), and if you feel so inclined make a pledge (just $10 will get you a download of their next album, Ignite the World part II).

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/17-12/23

Last week was a blur of holiday parties, sleepless nights, and dwarves. Saturday night, I attended the annual Hotel Cafe Holiday party and after hearing the gentlemen of Broken Anchor do their traditional Christmas rap followed by Cary Brothers and Harper Blynn merging their talents on what might now be my new favorite rendition of “O Holy Night”, it officially feels like The Holiday Season! Now, if only I could get some elves over to finish up my Christmas gifts, I’d be all set!

This week hosts another Holiday tradition, Camp Freddy at The Roxy. Instead of every Friday in December, this year the super group + unknown special guests are doing three nights in a row this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I can’t wait to see what surprises are in store for us this year.

The other must-see this week is Tuesday at The Hotel Cafe. This marks the last night of Harper Blynn’s residency. If you haven’t gotten around to seeing this amazing band, this is your last chance. DO IT!

New Music Tuesday 10/2/12 Featuring Three Days Grace, Hannah Georgas, and Tristan Prettyman

I’m hitting up the music store later. Here is what’s on the top of my list:

Three Days GraceTransit of Venues

I cannot believe it’s been almost 10 years since the release of Three Days Grace’s self-titled album. I guess it has been awhile if the way I discovered them was one of their music videos being played on the television. Anyway, the Canadian hard rockers are back with a new CD, their first since 2009. I am listening right now and can already see this one joining the ranks of their other CDs in heavy rotation on my iPod. The band does catchy angry-rock like no other. Here’s a taste:

Hannah GeorgasHannah Georgas

I stumbled across this one via twitter. I started listening and I just couldn’t let go. I’d say that’s a good sign. Here’s a stream of the song “Robotic”  from this Canadian chanteuse.

Tristan PrettymanCedar + Gold

This San Diego singer got me with this video released today for her song “I Was Gonna Marry You”. It feels relevant, so I wanted to share. The rest of the album continues to showcase Prettyman’s lovely vocals in a slightly more upbeat fashion. You can stream it here http://www.facebook.com/tristanprettyman/app_367300559972921

Other albums to look into today:

Kristen’s ’10 Music Mix- Track 2 – After Midnight Project

2. “The Becoming” – After Midnight Project

listen to the song here

An acoustic version:

After Midnight Project (AMP) is my great local band discovery of 2010. Something inspired me to check them out at Bamboozled…and from the very first song, they had me under their spell. At that same show, I was able to sneak into the VIP section to see AMP play an acoustic set. It is a mark of a truly great rock band if they can still blow you away playing acoustically…AMP takes top marks here. We ended up going to two different stops on the Warped Tour solely to see these guys play again. Then, the year culminated in an AMP headlining show at The Key Club…they brought out all the stops (new songs, a piano, members of Papa Roach and SOTY, confetti!) and cemented a spot on the list of my favorite bands. AMP’s album, Let’s Build Something to Break, is one of the best purchases I made all year.

Countdown to Epicenter Twenty Ten: 5 days!

As previously mentioned, next weekend, Epicenter Twenty Ten is the place to be! One of the bands I’m most excited to see that I’ve never seen before is Papa Roach. I’ve always been a casual fan, loving the obvious tunes like “Last Resort” and “Scars”, but I’ve never had the opportunity to see them live before. They recently released a new album featuring a mix of new tunes and live versions of old favorites. LMN’s friend Theresa, a long time Papa Roach fan, wrote a review of the new CD that definately has me excited about their live show. Check it out below:

Time for Annihilation: On the Record and On the Road

Album Review By Theresa Bickleman

For most bands, releasing a ‘greatest hits’ album takes years in the making and the album consists of only the chart topping hits that have made them successful. This isn’t the case for Papa Roach. It has been ten years since they have hit the mainstream music world and nothing seems to stop them. Their 7th studio album Time for Annihilation: On the Record and On the Road that was released August 31, 2010 it has five, new tracks and the rest of the album is a live version of their hits and their misses. It was about time Papa Roach decided to make a live record. There’s no denying the energy that this band has on stage and that energy blasts though the speakers. These four guys certainly know how to put on an electrifying rock show. There’s nothing fake about it.

The five new tracks are nothing but heavy hitting rock songs. Papa Roach slows things down just a little bit with the passionate ‘No matter What’ tune. ‘Kick in the Teeth’ was the first single off the record to be released. This was the perfect song to set the stage for the rest of the album. The song lets everyone know that these guys are ready for anything and aren’t going anywhere quite yet. “When it feels like a kick in the teeth I can take it”, and I’m pretty sure they can with the other three songs, ‘Burn’, ‘Enemy’, and ‘One Track Mind’. Not sure whom these lyrics are about, but I’m sure that Jacoby Shaddix and Co. mean business.

“Getting Away with Murder’ and ‘Between Angels and Insects’ are two great songs that made cut to be on this album. These songs will never get old being played live. Both of these songs can make any Papa Roach crowd go crazy. So it was only natural for these songs to have a place on the album. ‘Hollywood Whore’ from the 2009 Metamorphosis album can be considered a miss but it still has a catchy beat. That Album’s first official single, ‘Lifeline’ also took a spot on the live record. ‘…To be Loved’, ‘Time is Running Out’ and ‘Forever’ from the 2009 Paramour Sessions album are excellent crowd sing-a-long songs.

Two songs that would have been cool to see on the record would have been ‘Broken Home’ from their 1999 Infest album, and ‘She Loves Me Not’ from the 2002 LoveHateTragedy album. ‘Broken Home’ is one song that gets the crowd off their feet and gets mosh pits started.

Time for Annihilation would not be a complete compilation album without ‘Last Resort’ off their Infest album and ‘Scars’ from 2004’s Getting Away with Murder, which were two songs that really put Papa Roach on the Rock and Roll map.

I give this album an A. Not just because I’m a fan Papa Roach but also, because this album exceeded my expectations. If the five new tracks are a little taste of what is to come from this band, bring it on! Papa Roach is a band known for their live show, so therefore they had to make an album that makes you feel like your front row and they did exactly that with the live songs. You can’t even tell the misses are the misses. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, that just means you haven’t seen Papa Roach live.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/20-9/26

I’m doing my best to ignore the emails and updates about shows tonight. The fact that Jake Newton is now playing with Austin Hartley Leonard at The Foundry…I’m not listening. I need a night in! Not that I’m complaining. This past week has been fantastic. The number of new bands I was able to check out and enjoy for the first time include Everest, The Daylights, Jennifer Knapp, Assemble the Skyline, Electric Touch, Deluka, Taylor Locke and the Roughs, and Heavy Young Heathens. Plus, I saw the most bizarre combination of acts I could possible imagine in one evening: Trace Adkins and Primus. All in all, not a bad week for music.

And this next week is shaping up to be just as good! Weds night I would especially recommend coming to On The Rox to check out the fantastic night of music featuring another band I’ve been meaning to check out, Lakes.

Then the week will cap off with the Epicenter Twenty Ten festival out in Fontana, CA. I’ll be counting down to the event all week with posts about some of the artists I’m most looking forward to check out over the weekend.
