Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/5-3/11

Last week, my evenings were largely devoted to SXSW prep. I’d like to say the same for this week, but there are just too many good shows. Dan Wilson (my fave songwriter) is playing three shows at The Hotel Cafe along with Rachel Yamagata, Queen Caveat has their EP release show Thursday, and Friday night The Strip delivers the powerful one, two punch of Twin Atlantic at The Viper Room and Nico Vega with Street Drum Corps at The Roxy. And honestly, that’s just the beginning of the great shows this week in LA. Here are the rest of my suggestions:

Well, I had a delightful Thanksgiving full of adventures down in San Diego. It actually felt like a holiday which is a rare thing for me. I’m not really looking forward to facing my massive to do list tomorrow, but I am quite excited about this week’s show schedule. My beloved LA rockers, After Midnight Project, are doing their first show in what seems like years Monday night in North Hollywood at The Federal Bar. Another highlight is Tuesday when songstress Rachel Yamagata comes to The Troubadour to regale us with tunes from her fantastic new record, Chesapeake. Kristen’s Concert Calendar: 11/21-11/27

Since I got back from my east coast trip, I feel like I have been running full speed ahead non-stop. I can’t believe it’s already Sunday eve and despite working most of the weekend, my to do list barely has a scratch. I didn’t get out to too many shows last week, but the ones I saw were phenomenal. The Hours and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds at Royce Hall and Milo Greene and The Civil Wars at The Wiltern were both top notch musical experiences. And let’s not forget LMN’s show tonight featuring Wires in the Walls, Holy Rolling Empire, and Sunken Ships…an excellent night of music!

Despite it being a holiday week, there are still a few promising shows. I’m basically going to have to take it on an hour by hour basis, but those of you fortunate enough to be able to plan ahead, here’s what I’d recommend:

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/24-10/30

Today I’ve been busy watching the baseball game (Go Cardinals!), grading exams, and trying to ignore this sore throat that’s been building over the last few days. There is just too much going on in my life to get sick!  Last week was fairly epic musically. I made it to at least one set a night, saw several of my favorite bands (Imagine Dragons, Harper Blynn, Lakes, etc), and even got in a couple top notch national acts (St. Vincent is a marvel).

This week marks Youngblood Hawke’s last residency date at The Satellite, so if you haven’t caught them yet, don’t miss it (and bring your dancing shoes). It’s also week two of Harper Blynn’s Hotel Cafe residency. I still can’t believe how lucky we are to have these NYC boys with us until Thanksgiving!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/19-9/25

This fall, High Voltage Magazine is coming back with print issues. The cover artist is Fitz & The Tantrums and inside there are interviews, playlists, reviews for new albums and more! I have the privilege of being involved with this project and I’m really excited about it. To raise some funds for the first issue, we have been running a Pledge Music Campaign with part of the proceeds going to The George Harrison Fund for UNICEF.

We have collected rare and unreleased tracks from artists such as The Silent Comedy, Taylor Locke and The Roughs, Billy Morrison, Hurricane Bells, and more. These songs form a High Voltage compilation album that can be obtained at our basic pledge value of $10. Enjoying a lovely Sunday afternoon catching up with friends via email or phone and listening to George Stanford from the comfort of my home. Maybe this live stream thing isn’t such a bad thing after all. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 7/11-7/17

This past week has been incredibly rough. From all the problems resulting from the new apartment to my car breaking down and work stuff just not…working, I haven’t been in the best of spirits. I am very grateful to have friends who made the effort to drive me to/from a couple shows, without which I would descend into madness. I at least made it to two of the four The Silent Comedy shows. Those boys never fail to deliver a good time. Their show at the LACMA with Saint Motel was particularly enjoyable as it included a tour of the Tim Burton exhibit AND it got done early enough for us to catch a little “Weatherman” from Dead Sara at The Viper Room.

My favorite show last week, however, was Truth & Salvage Co. with Brian Wright Monday night at The Hotel Cafe. I discovered Truth & Salvage Co. at this venue over two years ago and seeing them play my favorite stage once again was like a homecoming. This band has the ability to transform the energy of an entire room making it impossible to not feel a strong sense of communal love, happiness, and an overwhelming desire to dance. And let’s not forget about the Brian Wright icing on the Truth & Salvage cake! That man is a marvel…and is incidentally playing a last minute gig tonight (Sunday) at Piano Bar at 10:30 (told you something would come up)

This week I start an intensive two week training course so my evening adventures will again be diminished. Nothing will stop me, however, from Parade of Lights Thursday night at The Viper Room. I’ve mentioned these boys before and am incredibly excited to have them back in Los Angeles. If you can make it, I’d love to see you there.
