Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/29-11/4

Don’t even talk to me about last week. I didn’t get out much. I did manage to have a panic attack or two due to the overwhelming situation I have found myself in at work. Things are not going well on that front. It makes me a bit miserable. I feel like a different person when I’m not out going to shows. I think I might have overcompensated Saturday night when I did get out to see Queen Caveat at The Roxy…I ended up on stage.

This week, I will do my best to get out to at least one or two shows, maintaining what I can of my sanity. I’d highly recommend Tuesday at TRiP to see the last show of my new favorite band, terminal, before they return to Denmark and take with them some serious sunshine.

New Music Tuesday 10/2/12 Featuring Three Days Grace, Hannah Georgas, and Tristan Prettyman

I’m hitting up the music store later. Here is what’s on the top of my list:

Three Days GraceTransit of Venues

I cannot believe it’s been almost 10 years since the release of Three Days Grace’s self-titled album. I guess it has been awhile if the way I discovered them was one of their music videos being played on the television. Anyway, the Canadian hard rockers are back with a new CD, their first since 2009. I am listening right now and can already see this one joining the ranks of their other CDs in heavy rotation on my iPod. The band does catchy angry-rock like no other. Here’s a taste:

Hannah GeorgasHannah Georgas

I stumbled across this one via twitter. I started listening and I just couldn’t let go. I’d say that’s a good sign. Here’s a stream of the song “Robotic”  from this Canadian chanteuse.

Tristan PrettymanCedar + Gold

This San Diego singer got me with this video released today for her song “I Was Gonna Marry You”. It feels relevant, so I wanted to share. The rest of the album continues to showcase Prettyman’s lovely vocals in a slightly more upbeat fashion. You can stream it here http://www.facebook.com/tristanprettyman/app_367300559972921

Other albums to look into today:

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 6/24-7/1

Currently listening to all the bands on the Warped Tour line-up…trying to decide if I want to go to Ventura’s date. I’m leaning towards yes, mostly because I want to see Dead Sara, but sadly I feel there are more bands on my “to avoid” list than my “to check out” list (yes, I have made lists). Regardless, I’m putting together my calendar a day early just in case…

Plenty of good shows this week. I’m most excited about seeing some local bands I haven’t seen in a while (Lovers Drugs, The Active Set, Sabrosa Purr, NO, Standing Shadows, etc.).  If you want to experience some great LA rock bands, it’s a good week to get out!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/12-12/18

Last Friday night, I had another one of those epic evenings on the Sunset Strip. I started at The Viper Room to see San Diego’s Kevin Martin. Then I ran to The Key Club to catch Jon McLaughlin and Stephen Kellogg and The Sixers with what must have been one of the most polite audiences I’ve ever been a part of. In drastic opposition, I stopped by The Roxy to witness some of the magic that is Camp Freddy. This week’s special guests included Neon Trees, Linda Perry, Sebastian Bach, Paul Stanley (KISS), and Fred Durst. I was going to head back to The Viper for the after party, but got sidetracked by some friends and pizza at Frankie and Johnny’s. Nights like these remind me why I love The Sunset Strip.

Monday night I’ll be back on The Strip for High Voltage Magazine’s Holiday Party at On the Rox. Musical Tastes (On a Date)

Every once in awhile, I go cruising through the interwebs all day and happen upon something rather golden. This time, I was going perusing through a particular site I like to visit on occasion called The Frisky (I have my girly moments, alright?) and came across this article about musical tastes on a date. Well, it wasn’t so much an article as a list from another site called How About We… and includes bands like Nirvana, The Ramones, The Pixies, Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes, Best Coast, Tool, Oasis, Prince, The Strokes and the like.

I’ve pulled some rather choice excerpts but you can view the full list here and part 2 here

David Bowie: You’re selective, but slutty.

The Arcade Fire: You spend the first third of relationship in a romantic frenzy and the last two trying to justify it.

AC/DC: If you’re a woman, you’re the kind of person who lets a guy move in with you after three dates because he’s temporarily homeless. If you’re a guy, you’re temporarily homeless.

LCD Soundsystem: You’re not the type to let your strong sense of irony ruin your good time.

Belle and Sebastian: If you hook up, it’s gonna get weird.

R.E.M.: You’ve got a big heart.

The Mountain Goats: You’re very serious about your feelings.

Van Morrison: You’re a romantic. Possibly with a slight drinking problem.

Nirvana: You’re angry and hurt.

Radiohead: You’re angry and hurt. But you’re open to getting some professional help.

Bob Dylan: You’re an asshole, but you don’t know it.

The Clash: You’re willing to work for it, but you’re kind of pissed that you have to.

The Cure: You fall in love WAY too easily.

Best Coast: You fall in love way too easily, but only for, like, a week.

Guns N Roses: You’re going to have to sex in the bathroom and regret it.

Joan Jett: You’re going to have sex in the bathroom and not regret it.

Leonard Cohen: You’re the kind of person that people get obsessed with for years. Too bad you’re too depressed to appreciate it.

Depeche Mode: You’re screwed up, but you know it, which actually does help.

Gogol Bordello: You sweat a lot and you have a nice smile.

Coldplay: Missionary position only. But lots of kissing and eye contact.

Paul Simon: You’re sincerely insightful about your relationship issues, but in the end you decide that it’s not your fault.

Green Day: You get upset over nothing all the time, but bounce back quickly.

Prince: You’re a little weird, but you make up for it by being a total sex machine.

U2: You’re very loving, but prone to fits of irritating self-righteousness.

Lady Gaga: You’re sort of obnoxious, but people can’t help but like you.

I can’t really pick just one from the lists. I have some R.E.M. with some Van Morrison and Depeche Mode thrown in. What about you?

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 6/20-6/26

This weekend was supposed to be SO much fun, but I ended up spending most of it sleeping. I guess I can only run away from sickness for so long. Fortunately, before the fever descended, I was able to spend an amazing night Weds at Empire, the weekly party Semi Precious Weapons throws at On the Rox (bar above The Roxy). So many of my friends were out, celebrating a few birthdays. SPW put on a stripped down miniset, including a slower version of their new tune “Free Booze” that I might just enjoy more than the original. Finally, we all danced the night away to tunes provided by my favorite DJ (DJ High Voltage). Such a memorable night! There are only two more Empires left (this Weds and next) so if you haven’t been, be sure to get on the list and go!

As for the rest of the week, here’s my wish list. At the moment, I can’t really fathom going out, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to. So many good shows this week. You’ll have to enjoy them for me until I’m back on my feet.
