Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/30-4/5

I tried a new boba establishment today. I went all the way to Little Tokyo to get it, but the brown sugar milk tea was top notch!  It was almost worth the ridiculous drive home fighting all the beach traffic. I guess this is what happens when LA decides to be ridiculously warm in March…sigh. I’m looking forward to next week when the weather (hopefully) cools down a bit. Next weekend is WonderCon in Anaheim. If you’re planning on being there, come visit The High Voltage small press booth. There will be some fun fill in the blank buttons!

As for music, my show pick of the week is Thursday  night at The Hotel Cafe for the Tim Jones record release show. Tim is a member of Truth & Salvage Co., one of my beloved LA bands (before they up and moved to Nashville). The special guest list looks includes Cary Brothers, Scott Kinnebrew, and Leslie Stevens. Last week was full of musical adventures. I heard new music from Dead Sara and Taylor Locke, discovered a great new band (San Francisco’s The Family Crest), and saw one of my favorites (Dear Boy). I also had the extreme pleasure of seeing The Matches, a band who went on hiatus years ago before I had the chance to see them live. That was an evening I will not soon forget. An added bonus was that most all of the events I attended last week were on the early side giving me more time for important things like sleeping and post-show hangs with friends.

There are more great show opportunities next week. If you’re really lucky, you scored a ticket to The Troubadour Tuesday night to see Brandi Carlile. I can’t stop listening to her new song, “The Eye”.

ALSO: Pete RG at The Mint (9:35)
ALSO: R5 w/ Magic Giant at The Roxy (8pm)

ALSO: Broods w/ Mikky Ekko at The Fonda (9pm)

Friday: Maudlin Stranters w/ Hunny and Yukon Blonde at The Satellite (9pm)

Oscar Sunday! I’m excited. Boyhood was one of my favorite films of 2014 and it’s not every year that one of my faves gets nominated. My other top films of 2014 were Only Lovers Left Alive, Obvious Child, and Locke. 2014 also had a few great movies about music. I loved Whiplash although it hit so close to home that  I spent much of the movie hiding behind my jacket. I also enjoyed Begin Again, but it didn’t quite live up to its director’s predecessor, one of my all-time favorites, Once. Finally, one music related movie you might not have seen is William H Macy’s directorial debut, Rudderless. This story about a father connecting with his deceased son through the son’s music had heart, a thought-provoking twist, and a cameo by Ben Kewller.

I’m still recovering from being sick, so I haven’t been going out much, but I’m hoping to get out a time or two this week. I’m especially looking forward to Dear Boy playing Bardot Wednesday night. I’ve also heard Taylor Locke’s new album, Time Stands Still, and it really makes me want to get out Friday to see him play downtown’s trendy new music spot, Mrs. Fish.  Both shows are free so I’d love to see you there!
