Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 7/28-8/3

Posted on by .

Sorry for the delay in this week’s calendar. I was completely wiped out by my adventures at Comic Con this past week. One of the absolute highlights of my Con experience was interviewing a few music composers about their work in film and TV shows like Fargo and Hannibal. I had a blast getting into the psyche of the score composer. You can read my take on that (and other panels and press rooms) on the High Voltage website: http://iamhighvoltage.com/2014/07/25/behind-the-music-crime-death-and-resurrection/

Other quick Comic Con highlights were meeting so many amazing fans and new friends, getting to chat with creators and actors in new shows iZombie and Constantine, a signing with author Deborah Harkness, zip-lining through Gotham, panels from Arrow, Penny Dreadful, and The Big Bang Theory, everything Supernatural including meeting the cast and show runner, and nearly running into Orlando Bloom.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 7/21-7/27

Posted on by .

Comic Con is this week! I’m quite excited to be going down to San Diego to cover the event with High Voltage. The options are a bit overwhelming, but I’m treating it like SXSW and choosing one or two things each day that I “need” to do and then just enjoying whatever else falls in between. My big three shows this year are Penny Dreadful, Banshee, and Supernatural, so if you hear about anything in relation to these shows, let me know!

Along the line of overwhelming options, let’s talk about Monday night and the biggest show conflict of 2014. When I found out that Twin Atlantic plays at The Troubadour the same time as Queen Caveat hits the stage at The Roxy, my heart nearly dropped out of my chest. Not to mention that Irontom is playing at the same time across town. I don’t understand why favorite bands have to play the same night in different locations.

Also this week, opportunities to see Nightmare & The Cat, OK Go, Paris Carney, and all the way from Ireland, Gavin James! What a week…

ALSO: Martha Wainwright w/ Guests at The Hotel Cafe (7pm)
ALSO: Monday Monday at Room 5 (8pm)

ALSO: The Two Tens and The New Electric Sound at The Federal Bar (9, 10)
ALSO: The Basement Sessions Presents Lucy Scholl FREE at Hemingway’s (9pm)

Life has been a tad bit more stressful than usual lately, mostly due to some untimely housing issues that have yet to be resolved. However, in the past few weeks, as if you all have sensed my distress, I’ve had an unusually high number of encounters with friends, some expected or planned, some quite random, and a few with folks I hadn’t seen in a long time. This is absolutely what I need while I’m trying to piece together my life and I really appreciate all of the amazing people I have around me.  I had an especially good time last night at what was my very first “Pie” party. I started reading The Death Cure today. For those of you who don’t know, that’s the third book in The Maze Runner series. I read The Maze Runner based on a recommendation. I tend to like those dystopian novels. The Maze Runner was not my favorite, but I was invested enough in the characters to go to the end of the seemingly short tome. Then I reached the end and realized that it was not the end at all and that it was just book one in a three book trilogy! At this point, there was no turning back so I’ve spent the last few weeks existing in this treacherous universe where you constantly question the point of your own existence. I guess this is not really too far from graduate school, but I’ll be happy to finish off this book, hopefully get some closure, and move on.

Last week was fantastically show-heavy, highlighted by sets from White Sea, The Kin, Sean Watkins, and Semi Precious Weapons. I also discovered a few new artists to keep tabs on like LA’s Roméo Testa and San Digeo’s The Midnight Pine. This week will probably be show-lite for me, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of great things going on around town.

Here’s what I’d recommend:

Monday: Lime Cordiale, The Black and The White, LA Font FREE at The Satellite (9pm)
ALSO: Island Apollo (formally The Bolts) FREE at Silverlake Lounge (8pm)
ALSO: Not In The Face and Little Dove at The Viper Room (8pm)
ALSO: Monday Monday at Room 5 (8pm)

ALSO: Mia Dyson at The Hotel Cafe (9pm)
ALSO: The Mowgli’s with WATERS, Night Riots, and The Janks at The Troubadour (7pm)

Weds: The Mowgli’s with WATERS, Max and The Moon, The Lucky Lonely at The Troubadour (7pm)
ALSO: Sonia Rao and Terra Naomi at WitZend (7:30, 9:45)
ALSO: Kyle Riabko and Javier Dunn at Room 5 (8,9)
ALSO: Via Echo with Strangers You Know at Bootleg Hi Fi (8pm)
ALSO: Swear and Shake and Tyler Lyle at The Hotel Cafe (7, 9)

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar 6/23-6/29

Last Friday I actual took a day off *gasp* to head out to Pomona and go to Warped Tour. My full recap will be posted later this week, but it was a much needed (albeit overly hot) mini-vacation that left me musical re-charged and with an extreme craving for lemonade. Another musical highlight was my involvement with High Voltage Radio Hour where we chatted with our special guests from OK Go about their new video, time with the Muppets, and upcoming album. You can listen to that interview as well as our stellar musical selections here: http://iamhighvoltage.com/2014/06/22/good-writings-transpose-you/

This week is your last chance to see French Style Furs (Cold War Kids + Barcelona) for their June residency at The Satellite. Monday night also features the wonderfully cutesy/quirky/folky Carsie Blanton at The Hotel Cafe, Danish singer Nabiha playing with White Sea and Until The Ribbon Breaks at Bootleg, and a stellar line-up of singer-songwriters at Room 5 for Monday Monday. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 6/16-6/22

Work was particularly headache-inducing this week, but life was balanced out nicely with some fabulous musical adventures. They included dinner with the High Voltage crew at Dani Shay’s, an intimate Charli XCX showcase, a drop by casa de Semi Precious Weapons, a classic evening on the Sunset Strip that included Irontom and a run-in with the singer of The Neighbourhood, and two trips to The Hotel Cafe to see new band loves for the first time (Penny & Sparrow and Levi Weaver). I suppose I have absolutely nothing to complain about!

Speaking of High Voltage, show pick of the week is our show Wednesday at Silverlake Lounge featuring the aforementioned (and uber talented) Dani Shay.  Warped Tour also comes through So-Cal this week.
