Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 12/5-12/11

Last week was a blur of music and French fries ending with a lovely birthday party at a park where there were cupcakes, live music, balloon animals, some coloring with markers…okay, the party was ostensibly for a 2 year old and the live music involved a few creative rounds of “Wheels on the Bus”, but I was given ginger beer which made me feel like the party was for me too!

I’m getting in a little Harry Potter reading and watching this weekend (reading Goblet of Fire, watching Order of the Phoenix). Normally, I spend Thanksgiving weekend with Harry, but this year I’ll be in Stars Hollow with some Gilmore Girls.  Although there aren’t many musical opportunities on the holiday itself, a few local venues are participating in the Gobble Gobble Give Potluck party to feed the homeless. For more info: http://www.theecho.com/event/1386044-gobble-gobble-give-los-angeles/.

I’m struggling with a slight addiction problem to Badflower’s new Temper EP.  I’ve slowly been going through the thousands of unread emails in my inbox and finding new music to listen to, but I keep coming back to Badflower. The Record Company headlining at The El Rey Thursday night will certainly be one to remember.  I’m also excited that Lapsley has come to town.  I’ve been listening to her album, Long Way Home, since she blew me away as a surprise guest at a SXSW showcase I attended.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/31-11/6

Posted on by .

The best Halloween concert is one that does more than merely dress up a band to play an otherwise ordinary show. I’ve been to a few memorable themed shows (Nico Vega’s Witch Hunt comes quickly to mind), and last week seeing the gents of Dear Boy break their typically unyielding mold in the spirit of Halloween will be added to that list.  I guess there is something about wearing skeleton onesies that inspires a musical freedom complete with instrument swapping and the covering of punk rock songs with abandon.

Next week brings with it a new month and several exciting bands from overseas. Top on my list are Walking On Cars and the combo of The Hunna and The Struts who will be sure to dominate the stage of The Fonda Thursday night.

Here is the rest of my list:

ALSO: Calum Scott at The Troubadour (8pm)
ALSO: Sound Collective w/ Josh and Kira FREE at Saint Rocke (8pm)
ALSO: Emo Nite LA at The Echo and Echoplex (9pm)
ALSO: Super Tuesday’s FREE at Butter’d Up (10pm)

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 10/24-10/30

Posted on by .

Since I am no longer pouring over journal articles every day, I’m upping my dosage of reading for pleasure.  This past week I revisited an old friend of mine, Anne Shirley of Green Gables.  I hadn’t read any L.M. Montgomery since I was a child and it occurs to me now how influential the notions in these books might have been to my young mind.  The necessity of kindred spirits, the value of a vivid and sustaining internal world, an appreciation for the smaller pleasures, and putting a premium on intelligence over external beauty are all lessons from Anne of Green Gables that one might argue are key components of my personality today.

On the docket for next week is a little Douglas Adams.  I was lucky enough to attend a screening and panel for the new HBO show, Dirks Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency (loosely based on a couple of Adams’ books) last week.  The tease of the first episode got me craving the beautifully random insanity often associated with a Douglas Adams novel.

Music-wise, I’m pleased to report I made a fair number of shows last week and my “current faves” playlist has expanded with new music from Badflower, Young Rising Sons, and Night Riots. Next week I hope to add new Reeve Carney music to the list after seeing him play Monday night at Molly Malone’s. This is a particularly meaningful show for me as many of my fondest early memories of living in Los Angeles revolve around seeing Reeve at Molly Malone’s.
