Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/27-2/2

I spent some time at NAMM this weekend. It was my first NAMM experience, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’ve concluded that NAMM is just a big networking event. I had a great time running into old friends and making new ones.  I also caught some exciting showcases, picked up some ear plugs to try, and saw many a snazzy guitar, drum, microphone, etc. It was all quite exhausting and my feet are ready to go sit at a desk all next week. Except, of course, for the evenings when we have some fun musical options. Most of my top picks are on Monday. Good luck deciding between Zane Carney at The Hotel Cafe, Vanaprasta’s last residency show with Dear Boy, Andrew Ripp at Bardot, and another excellent round of singer-songwriters at Room 5 for the Monday Monday event.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/20-1/26

Last week I finally got to a show in 2014. Moon Taxi at The Troubadour. They made me dance. I am now excited about life again. I hope the fact that it took me 16 days to get to a show isn’t indicative of the year to come. Today I’m heading down to San Diego to see The Silent Comedy, Deadly Birds, and The Heavy Guilt at The Casbah, so that’s a good sign. A couple favorite bands at my favorite San Diego venue. Kristen’s 2013 Music Mix – Track 20 – The Kin

2013 was another excellent year for music. I put together a little mix of some of the songs and artists that meant something to me this year. Enjoy!

20. The Kin

The Kin FINALLY released some new material this year, an EP titled Get On It. They needed something to sell while on the road opening for Pink (!!!). The EP is only 5 songs, but showcases quite the range.  “Mary” has been one of my favorite The Kin songs for some time and I was thrilled that it was included. The Kin is one of the most talented bands I know and I very much look forward to what is next for them.

Kristen’s 2013 Music Mix – Track 19 – Tonight Alive

2013 was another excellent year for music. I put together a little mix of some of the songs and artists that meant something to me this year. Enjoy!

19. Tonight Alive

I was leaving Warped Tour for the day, when I happened to walk by the stage where this Australian band was playing and I was drawn in by their performance and their songs and the way singer, Jenna McDougall, dominated the audience. When their album, The Other Side, came out in September, this song stuck out as an instant favorite. I was slightly disappointed when the band failed to play “The Other Side” when I saw them again at The Roxy later in the year.

Kristen’s 2013 Music Mix – Track 18 – Dear Boy

2013 was another excellent year for music. I put together a little mix of some of the songs and artists that meant something to me this year. Enjoy!

18. Dear Boy

Out of the ashes of band love, Scarlet Grey, came Dear Boy. This is another one of my bands of 2013. I have been to most of the shows that this band has ever performed in the US. They released their very first EP in September and yours truly merited a thank you in the liner notes. This is a first for me so needless to say, I’m terribly excited and incredibly grateful to know such wonderful and talented people. “Come Along” was my first introduction to the sound of Dear Boy and I knew instantly it would make an appearance on this mix.
