Between Aurora’s headline show at The Mayan and a Sandra Oh Q&A following a screening of The Chair, it’s been a week of inspiring women. It’s always refreshing to see people use their talent to spark conversation and community in a way where camaraderie is not built at the expense of others (looking at you politicians, businessmen, and football…).

Thanksgiving next week means time to start working on my End of Year Music Mix! One band that is sure to make the cut, The Record Company, is playing Teragram Ballroom Monday night. It will be a fun reminder of that time I played “Coachella party goer” in the music video for “How High”.

Last week, my show-going might suggest some sort of multiple personality disorder. Monday was Grady Strange and Leslie Stevens, Tuesday took me from Billy Raffoul to Betcha, and Wednesday had me pumped up with Boston Manor and then brought down with David Ramirez. I alllmost went from singer songwriters to Reignwolf on Friday, but the timing didn’t quite work out, so I merely did the jump from country to alt-pop.  People often ask me what kind of music I like, and I don’t really have a good answer to that one.

One thing I will say is that I like checking out new music and next week, we’ve got Dar Williams, Aurora, Young Rising Sons, Charlotte Cardin, and Inhaler, all having released excellent new albums this year!

It’s been a few days since I’ve been out for music and I feel very tempted to go to a show this evening, knowing it’s not really the best idea. The nail in the coffin of this notion is that I am staying at a friend’s place and wouldn’t be able to find easy parking when I got back late.  I feel like I’d have a very different life if I had to rely on street parking in Los Angeles. Today, I am extra grateful for my reserved parking space!

Saturday was a blast from the past at Chain Fest, a day featuring some of the great pop/punk bands from my earlier life including the recently resurrected The Summer Set, Mayday Parade playing songs off 2007’s A Lesson in Romantics, and staples from the soundtrack of my youth from Anberlin and Jimmy Eat World. The best part of the event was the seat location, close enough to provide a great view but also allowing me to dance from a seated position (I suffered zero foot, knee or back issues at the end of 8 hours of music)!  Several of the bands vocalized respect for the seated dancing move and my appreciation grew for bands that age along with their fans. The experience felt in severe contrast to other shows I attended last week *cough*Alexander 23*cough*

Next week we have a stacked Monday night highlighted by a TRISHES album release party at the Hotel Cafe, a week of Wolf Alice events, and several Halloween show opportunities (I’ll be spending the holiday weekend hiding out with a couple of dogs who will NOT be put in costume).
