Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/12-3/18

It’s beginning to feel a lot like South By….evvvverywhere I go!  From last night’s dance with The Wrecks and Dreamers to this morning’s random free drink at The Coffee Bean, I might as well already be in Austin for my favorite time of the year, SXSW Music Week!  My actual trip begins tomorrow.  Per usual, I’ve listened to all the artists, compiled a 20+ page schedule of events, and packed a suitcase full of comfortable walking shoes.  Top artists to see include faves like Frank Turner, SUR, and morgxn, but I’m also looking forward to checking out a ton of new (to me) artists like Sam Fender, Bad Pony, half*alive, and Jade Bird. We shall see which new artist or band meets (or dare I say exceeds) “the Graham Bar”, so named for Lukas Graham the year that band blew everyone else out of the water.

If you’re in LA and also want to discover some great new music, go check out Findlay or Bobi Andonov playing Monday night. And if you just want to see some favorites do NOT miss the AWOLNATION, Nothing But Thieves, Irontom extravaganza coming to The Wiltern for two nights!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/5-3/11

Had a bit of an adventure Friday night when, driving to First Fridays at The Natural History Museum, I got a flat tire.  It was raining, rush hour, and most auto shops were closing, but I was surprisingly calm as I called for the tow, figured out where I could go to get it fixed that night, and somehow, miraculously made it to the Natural History Museum in time for the main event, Mondo Cozmo.  I’m not sure if it was because of the car troubles or the fact that I hadn’t been to a show all week or the beautiful friends that I ran into at the event or maybe the buffalos the band was playing in front of, but the night turned into one of the most uplifting and transformative Mondo Cozmo experiences (and they are all quite good so this is saying something).

I know I’m not supposed to be going to many shows next week either, but with so many faves (Dear Boy, Dreamers/The Wrecks, Hudson Taylor, A Silent Film, HAWAI) and a plethora of highly anticipated acts (The Academic, Charlie Cunningham, Mt. Joy, Billy Raffoul) coming through, we’ll see how much I can hold to that. Either way, I anticipate a sleep-light week.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/26-3/04

One of my greatest, self-ascribed purposes in life is to introduce my people to my bands (hello reason for this calendar!).  Second to that, I also quite enjoy introducing my friends to one another.  Last night, in the unlikeliest location of Silver Spring, Maryland, worlds collided as college friends and grad school friends came together to enjoy an amazing night of music featuring my LA loves, Irontom who are currently on tour with Nothing But Thieves and AWOLNATION.  ‘Twas one for the books!

And while I would much rather continue on the road following that tour to their next location, I am, instead, on a plane heading back to Los Angeles.  Fortunately, there are plenty of shows in LA this week and while my personal show schedule is going to be slightly usurped by SXSW prep,  I’ll need to make it out at least a time or two…eyeing First Friday at The National History Museum featuring Mondo Cozmo!

Kristen’s Concert Calendar: 2/5-2/11

There were so many birthdays and related celebrations this past week, I could not keep up!  I’m exhausted, but it was nice to break the routine a bit (don’t worry, I still saw 13 bands).  In addition to the music, I discovered truffle avocado toast, ate unicorn tears and Rainbow fries, taught a few people how to play Rummy and went down a slide that overlooked the entire city.  I also won a game of ping pong, but that might have a lot to do with the fact that it was doubles and my partner had the wingspan of an albatross…

Next week poses a few musical conundrums, especially Wednesday and Thursday nights.  I’m not even sure what to recommend. Just go out! Do something! Celebrate!
