T-minus one week until leaving for SXSW (aka the best week of my year).  I go back and forth between being incredibly excited and incredibly overwhelmed…with not much in between. My schedule is coming along nicely. It’s mostly full of new and potentially exciting bands to investigate, but there are a few known favorites sprinkled in there to help give me perspective. I hope to make some time this week to put together my top ten list of anticipated acts, so keep an eye out on the site for that.

I’ve done my research, but I have yet to fill out my official Oscar ballot. I don’t feel like there is a clear Best Picture winner this year which should make things a tad more exciting. I think I need to get a good walk in to finalize my selections before people come over.

In the meantime, planning for next week has me excited about seeing some new bands. We’ve got Rivvrs Tuesday night and Brothers and I on Saturday, two bands I’ve been listening to but have yet to see. And let’s not leave out The Wreks, who I had the pleasure of seeing open for Nothing But Thieves and are playing a free show downtown Monday night.

Watching a documentary about the history of sound. It just touched on how an accident with a vacuum tube basically created the rock and roll guitar noise. This is a nice break in a weekend that has consisted largely of playing airplanes with a three year old (read: I’m exhausted!). I was happy to take the long weekend to visit friends in Kansas City, MO where it’s a good 60 degrees colder than LA when I left.  We had lunch today at a cafe where they played Saint Motel so I don’t feel too far from home.

Once again, we’ve got a week full of amazing show opportunities. Monday night is the final night of The Cordovas in Los Angeles. If you haven’t gotten to see them yet, here’s your chance.

Feeling introspective at the moment. I’m not sure what the rest of you were doing these last few hours (something involving a TV and snack foods perhaps), but I was on the phone with my best friend. The call started with tears of sorrow but ended, per usual, with laughter. I think the conversation devolved somewhere in between discussing the relevance of “do-nothingism” and musing over Jesus’ potential bladder control issues in Gethsemane.  Regardless, I’m feeling better about life.

And with that attitude I will approach this week of music trying to think about all the good shows I will see and not the ones I will miss. Yes, this is a week of tough musical choices! Approximately T-1 hr. ‘til new X-Files!!! During college, it became a Sunday night tradition to watch an episode or two of The X-Files to reset for the week to come. I really need a good reset this week, so if anything can do the trick, this will. Extreme bonus points go to my college roommate, Colleen, who I will be watching with through some kind of video chat method that we have about an hour to figure out…
