Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 2/6-2/12

This week I hope to drag myself out of the house for a show or two. I had a super busy week, or so it seemed. I did nap a lot and I spent a lot of it being sore after some really good workouts. I feel like I was productive but I might have undone all that work with the amount of food I ate on Sunday. It was all worth it though. Hopefully I can shake this lethargy and get out to see some bands this week. Hopefully you make it out too!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/6-2/12

I have found something to love about the Super Bowl! While the game was going on, I was able to drive about town with next to no traffic.  I went to the Farmer’s Market and then took to my favorite beach where I went for a long walk, watched the sun set and caught up with my bestie who lives on the opposite coast (also uninterested in football-related antics).  The sound of the water crashing to the shore made it impossible to be unhappy.  Thank you, Super Bowl!

Lots of musical offerings next week to look forward to. I caught a little bit of Asaf Avidan last week at The Hotel Cafe and the room was electric. There are two more chances to see him this week before he heads to France. He tells a great story about singing like a dying cat!

Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 1/30-2/5

I never thought I’d be someone who missed the rain, but after this wind we’ve had the past few days, I think I would rather have the rain again. At least the wind is helping things dry out, so I really shouldn’t complain. However, I have had a scratchy throat off and on so I’m not sure if I’m getting sick, have allergies, or am just dried out from the weather. The joys!

It’s a weird week for shows this week. This is SD at it’s best where it’s all on one day(s) and nada on others. Sigh.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/30-2/5

Saturday night at the punk rock show, Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls transformed a traditional mosh pit “wall of death” into a much needed wall of hugs. He spoke of the importance of being part of a community that extolled the values of tolerance, kindness, compassion, and consideration as he literally transformed something quite scary (I mean it’s called a wall of death!?!?) into a positive, bonding experience.  It was quite the evening full of singing and jumping and jazz hands, but the best part might have been the feeling of pride towards my community of musicians and music lovers that spans the globe.  Hugs all around!

As we venture into another week of the unknown, there are a few great show options to help pull us all through. Listen To This! 01/27/17

Here’s what I’ve been into lately…

Album: The KinModern Primitive

One of my faves released a long-awaited album today. I’ve been listening all day, enjoying songs, a good mix of power and beauty, old and new, modern and primitive(?).  I keep trying to pick a favorite song, but every time I think I’ve settled on one, the next song will come on and I’ll change my mind.  Certainly a record I’d recommend digging into.

Video: Arkivist – “Burnout”

If you want a band to follow from the early stages, check out Arkivist. The recently relocated to LA trio already are developing a definitive style that is very much their own. Their music speaks both to the more intellectual-minded as well as to those appreciative of the more baser notions of rhythm and melody.

Show: Zane Carney at The El Rey

I’ve been to several shows in the past couple of weeks, but this one…this one holds a very special place in my heart. Guitar maestro, Zane Carney, with his backing band (composed, in part, of LMN Band Love Carney) took the audience through a musical journey, rocking and rolling through the best of Zane’s ever growing (and improving) catalog of songs. The journey climaxed with a rendition of “Helter Skelter” that was pretty much an out of body experience. Hopefully his new music will be released soon, but until then, you simply must take every opportunity to see Zane Carey live (I’d post a video, but it wouldn’t do the experience justice).

SXSW Watch: Middle Kids

I’m making my way through the list of SXSW artists and Middle Kids were one to really catch my ear. This three-piece from Australia has an EP coming out Feb. 17th and will be at The Echo Feb. 25th.  Mark your calendars!

New Band Love: Walking on Rivers

I’m sure many people have that fantasy of going off on vacation, perhaps to a foreign land, and falling in love, having that magical night, and taking home a perfect memory that you will never forget. Well, folks, it has happened to me. I went off on an adventure to Berlin and found a new love; a band love of course!

Meet Walking on Rivers:

They bill themselves as an indie folk/pop group, which I suppose is appropriate (think older Mumford & Sons).  The quartet is from Dortmund, Germany which I had to look up (it’s central west, has a football museum and a building with a giant U on top), but they sing in English.  I was drawn initially to the band’s use of harmonies and piano but what sold me at the show was their energy, cohesiveness, and connection with the audience…they even came into the crowd to sing for their encore.  They told me they had only been a band for a bit over a year which was surprising given the depth of well crafted songs on their set list.  They have a released EP that you can check out on bandcamp, but they also have a slew of videos that I think give a great sense of the band.  They mentioned that maybe next year they’ll get to The States.  I sure hope so. In the meantime, I may be the only person in all of this land sporting a Walking on Rivers t-shirt.  Hopefully that will change soon.
