Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/9-2/15

Everyone around me seems to be falling apart. Arthritic hands, the flu, and bruises on my legs from a particularly rough Irontom concert are my personal ailments. Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 2/2-2/8

Last Monday when this post went up, it was drizzly and grey. This Monday is set to be in the mid-seventies and mostly sunny. Bi-polar weather much? I suppose I shouldn’t complain either way living in San Diego and all that. We could be back east with the blizzard and such. It’s a tough life having sun around 90% of the time. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 2/2-2/8

I’m feeling very grateful this week for living in LA. There aren’t many places where you can sit outside and work all day long. It’s quite pleasant until you get locked out of the house because you didn’t think to take your keys to sit in the backyard. Then, suddenly, it just feels cold.

On the music front, I’ve been obsessively listening to Badflower’s “The Jester”, Brandi Carlile’s “The Eye”, Paul Keen’s “Pick Another Part” and Tony Lucca’s entire self-titled album. Tony’s album release party last week featured an appearance from Keaton Simons who is playing three shows this week on Friday, including a double set at my newly discovered downtown club, Mrs Fish. My other show pick this week is Wednesday night at Harvard & Stone where The Active Set will be celebrating their EP release.

If you’re looking to get out for some music, here is what I’d recommend:

My Goodness at The Satellite 1/29/15

P1570741This Seattle trio created a storm at The Satellite Thursday night. As a fan of their album, Shiver + Shake, I was expecting a good rock show, but I was not quite expecting the machine that plowed through song after song with such intense ferocity and impressive display of musicianship. Barely any talking was done throughout the set. The band let the music speak for itself. Singer/guitarist, Joel Schneider, standing off to the side, evoked a bit of a Cold War Kids vibe, taking the mood from quiet to banging with the perfect punctuation of howls and growls. Bassist, Cody Votolato, epitomized the rocker vibe. At one point during the set, he accidently knocked over a cymbal from the drum set, but instead of backing away he embraced the momentum, disrupting the kit further adding emphasis to an already hard hitting song.  Holding it all down center stage was drummer, Andy Lum, a beast in human form driving the beats with a precision and strength that made it hard to look away. I must say, it is always a treat when a drummer is more visible on the stage.

P1570737 (2)   P1570770 (2)

What is most impressive to me about this band is their ability to create “moments”. Tonal shifts mid-song, mini-instrumental solos, and catchy rifts are trademarks of any My Goodness song, giving them movement and making them memorable. It is impossible to get bored at a My Goodness show. See them live and suddenly the band’s name makes perfect sense. My Goodness indeed!

Here’s the first My Goodness song I heard and still one of my favorites:

New Music Tuesday 1/27/15 f. The Lone Bellow

unnamedIf you’re looking for new music on this fine Tuesday, head directly to your music outlet of choice and pick up The Lone Bellow’s new album, Then Came The Morning. This second album from the folk-indie trio from Brooklyn really hits the musical spot. This band won me over when I saw them perform at The Way Over Yonder Fest and this album does an amazing job at capturing the band’s incredible energy and genuine emotion. The album’s title and opening track sets the tone with its gospel-esque choir and powerful blending of vocals. Other highlights include the build-up to the exclamatory chorus in “Take My Love”, the quiet beauty of “Call to War”, and the rockin’ guitar in the foot-stoppin’ “Heaven Don’t Call Me Home”.

Here’s a taste with the band’s live performance from Letterman:

Amanda’s SD Concert Calendar 1/26-2/1

I hopped on the crazy train and decided to try a juice cleanse for the first (and probably last) time. It’s been tough but I’ve somehow managed to survive. I technically have one day left but considering I was riding my 1100 lb horse today and going to a gym class, the juice was put on the back burner. What’s not on the back burner this week is some fresh shows for your listening and viewing pleasure. Wednesday is a tough one with Dead Feather Moon at the Belly Up and an LA invasion by way of Crash Kings, My Goodness, and Irontom. Tough choice. Godspeed.

Tuesday: Mates of State @ Casbah at 9pm

Wednesday: Dead Feather Moon, Shake Before Us, Barbarian @ Belly Up at 8pm

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 1/26-2/1

Oftentimes I have my weeks pretty planned out in advance. I’m not very good with last minute decision-making. Last week, however, was an aberration on several accounts and as a result I ended up at an epic Butch Walker/Frank Turner show at The Hotel Cafe and an Irontom double header at a new (at least to me) venue downtown called Mrs. Fish.  Weeks like this leave me exhausted but also inspired.

I have some actual plans up my sleeve for this week that will hopefully be equally inspiring. Monday night is Zane Carney’s last residency date at the Hotel Cafe. After 5 months of Mondays, here’s your last chance to see him at this venue before he moves on to bigger things. My other show pick is Thursday night at The Satellite. Crash Kings headline with openers Badflower and My Goodness. On that last band, I’d been meaning to see the Seattle rockers since first hearing their head-banging “Cold Feet Killer”.
