Local Music Nation

I was going to use this post to talk about how excited I am for my annual trip to Austin for SXSW, but I just read a report about how petitioners are hoping to cancel the event due to the coronavirus. Now, I am attempting to keep my anticipation levels at bay so I’ll talk about something else…   …   …   or perhaps just get to the good stuff for next week when Moses Sumney plays his final residency show at The Bootleg Theater and Saint Motel comes home to The Fonda.

Last week wore me down and by Friday I didn’t have much left. Then, I open my computer to see what new music has been introduced to the world and I spy a new single from Biffy Clyro (fave band alert!).  I press play on “Instant History” and suddenly my world’s problems melt away and for a little over 3 minutes, everything is great.  Between the Biffy Clyro single, Badflower finally releasing “Move Me”, and the Alanis Morrisette version of “Smiling” from the Jagged Little Pill musical, I’d say it was New Music Friday for the win!

The most unexpected frustration about not being able to speak is feeling rude when you’re out in public. Just going to the store offers a series of opportunities to say, “thank you” or “excuse me” and when you can’t physically utter words, it feels impolite. I am currently on day 3.5 of some sort of laryngitis that has rendered me mute.  I am very grateful for self-checkouts and only wish my fave boba place had one so I could order a hot honey lemon drink w/ jellies without using some sort of awkward note.

I hope my voice comes back for next week because we have some hootin’ and hollerin’ to do Friday night at The Viper Room as The Shakers reunite for one night only! Woot!

Band Love Alert: I first saw Canadian band, Boniface, a couple years ago at SXSW. I was instantly captivated by this quiet, introspective presence whose songs would burst forth with an emotional intensity and swelling pop/rock melodies. I couldn’t look away! Two years later, Micah Visser (AKA Boniface) and their band is releasing a self-titled debut album THIS FRIDAY! I’ve been listening somewhat obsessively and last week had the fortuitous opportunity to attend an event showcasing artists from Manitoba and featuring Boniface!  The new music is a logical (and satisfying) expansion from what I heard two years ago, and the live show has an unexpected confidence that increases the palpable emotion as well as the odds of a spontaneous mid-show dance party.  If you need an advanced listen, check out recent single “Oh My God”, or my favorite song off the album, “Wake Me Back Up” and on Friday, give yourself a Valentine’s Day treat and listen to Boniface.

Leading up to Friday, we have a few other shows celebrating new releases including JP Saxe at The Echo and The Lone Bellow’s two nights at The Troubadour. For Valentine’s Day we have two evenings at The Peppermint Club with Evan + Zane celebrating both the lovers (Friday) and anti-lovers (Saturday).
