I’m exhausted, but I’m still chanting from my latest encounter with my current band obsession, Biffy Clyro. For those of you who don’t realize what an amazing opportunity it was to see them at such a small venue, you should read this article . Anyway, between Semi Precious Weapons, Parade of Lights, Biffy Clyro, The Avett Brothers, Brandi Carlile, and Truth & Salvage Co., last week will be really difficult to beat…not that this week won’t give it a fair try. Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 9/20-9/26

I’m doing my best to ignore the emails and updates about shows tonight. The fact that Jake Newton is now playing with Austin Hartley Leonard at The Foundry…I’m not listening. I need a night in! Not that I’m complaining. This past week has been fantastic. The number of new bands I was able to check out and enjoy for the first time include Everest, The Daylights, Jennifer Knapp, Assemble the Skyline, Electric Touch, Deluka, Taylor Locke and the Roughs, and Heavy Young Heathens. Plus, I saw the most bizarre combination of acts I could possible imagine in one evening: Trace Adkins and Primus. All in all, not a bad week for music.

And this next week is shaping up to be just as good! Weds night I would especially recommend coming to On The Rox to check out the fantastic night of music featuring another band I’ve been meaning to check out, Lakes.

Then the week will cap off with the Epicenter Twenty Ten festival out in Fontana, CA. I’ll be counting down to the event all week with posts about some of the artists I’m most looking forward to check out over the weekend.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar 8/16-8/22

I’m still flying high over all the glorious weekend I had in San Diego at The North Park Music Thing…either that or this feeling is caused by the combination of acute sleep deprivation and abnormally high levels of caffeine necessary to accomplish everything that needs to be done for Monday.

Anyway, North Park Music Thing (NPMT) is like a mini SXSW that takes place in San Diego every year. During the day it’s a conference with booths, demo listening sessions, and panels on topics ranging from music licensing and touring on a budget to the current state of radio and music and technology. At night it’s a veritable smorgasbord of music with all the local clubs and bars playing host to a variety of showcases featuring mostly local music acts. I love conferences as places for learning and inspiration and I love concert festivals for the discovery and enjoyment factors. The combination of the two was quite heavenly.

Briefly, some highlights of my weekend included a highly entertaining keynote speech by Kim Fowley, seeing Endoxi again, the near mosh-pit that took place at The Silent Comedy set, and meeting and talking to some new music-loving friends. Also, the absolute MAGIC that occurred Saturday night as we venue hopped, listening to and discovering band after amazing band. This included several LA-based bands; faves like Lady Danville and The Rescues as well as some new fantastic groups like The Makepeace Brothers and Shaimus. Seriously, I was floating…

And in my attempt to remain up in the air, there is plenty of good stuff I’m looking forward to this week. And the list goes as follows:

Mumford & Sons at The BellyUp

Yet another British band stole my heart last Sunday night.  I have been casually enjoying Mumford & Sons for some time now, but seeing them live took my feelings to a completely new level and made me aware of so many things I would never have know from simply listening to their album. I had no idea, for example, that most of their songs were preformed with only a kick drum for percussion. Mr. Mumford has the ability to sing, play acoustic lead guitar, and keep the beat…that’s incredibly. Their newer material, however, seems to involve more percussion.  For several songs the entire kit was employed by either the singer or the bassist. This is another thing I would be unaware of had I not been able to see them live. Their newer material, by the way, is equally moving.

But this list of new things I learned about Mumford & Sons from seeing them live goes on. I learned that the bassist has the best facial expressions, the band can instrument swap with ease, the band members have great in between songs banter…and on a related note, like to keep their pants on while performing on stage. They are also a happy band (lots of smiling)…plus, they seem to enjoy performing while various farm animals are strewn about the stage (picture evidence to follow).

So, it was an amazing night learning more about Mumford & Sons, but let’s face it, the real reason I ventured down to Solano Beach in the first place was because of the opening band….The Silent Comedy. I actually got two doses of my fave local San Diego band over the weekend. And even with a more than slightly under the weather singer/bassist, the boys still delivered their unique brand of folk rock, blowing the roof off the joint before Mumford & Sons even had a chance.

And once again I will mention that The Silent Comedy will be venturing up to LA June 17th to perform at an event at Speakeasy. Also performing that night: Queen Caveat! Check out the event details here:

Kristen’s Concert Calendar: 6/7-6/13

This week I write to you from San Diego. Tonight I have a ticket to go see The Silent Comedy open for Mumford & Sons. Needless to say, there is a great deal of excitement involved. Friday night The Silent Comedy played at The Royal Dive in Oceanside so I decided to make a weekend of it in San Diego. Not that it’s been all fun and games…actually it’s mostly been paper-writing, but the change of location was good I suppose. And I get to see one of my favorite bands twice!  And speaking of the marvelous The Silent Comedy, they are coming back up to LA June 17th. Playing a NEW VENUE called Speakeasy over in the Silverlake area. Also playing that night: Queen Caveat! It’s gonna be a good one, so mark your calendar!

Honestly I still feel like it should be March. The last two months were so incredibly busy, they just flew right by. And now, all of a sudden, I’m facing end of quarter deadlines and am freaking out juuuust a tad. And looking at my June calendar it seems that this month won’t be any less busy. Kristen’s Concert Calendar: 5/17-5/23

Last week was a very emotional week of beginnings and endings…and many goodbyes. On the music front, one of my favorite bands, Jealousy Curve, officially announced that they were going to end their run as a band. Their last show will be their record release next Saturday in Philadelphia at World Cafe Live. (yes I will be there). Carney’s record release show Saturday in Los Angeles at The El Rey signified the exact opposite; the beginning of a successful and (hopefully) very long career. Watching the guys be escorted from the back to the signing table where we all had to wait in line to get our CDs signed and say our hellos really made me realize how far the band has come since I saw them play every week at Molly Malone’s. The entire set was a bit emotional for me. I was at once immensely grateful for having such an amazing band be a part of my life for the last couple of years and incredibly sad that they were leaving Los Angeles and I would not be seeing them play again anytime soon.

But such is life. Really it just gives me more time and energy to discover amazing new bands to enrich and fulfill my life, right? Well, that’s what I’m telling myself anyway.
