Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 5/6-5/12

It was another great week for new music releases.  I’m still obsessively listening to Catfish and The Bottlemen’s The Balance but have supplemented with new albums from Judah & The Lion and SYML.  Matt Maeson also released his debut album, which would normally be cause for celebration, but his show at The Troubadour is very sold out so I’m sulking.  Speaking of sold out shows, Alec Benjamin sold out two nights at The El Rey next week which blows my mind as I clearly remember sitting cross-legged on the floor with some close friends watching this guy play the midnight set (aka basically a private show) at The Satellite not terribly long ago…

This week is bursting with great shows!  There will be some tough choices to make, but the one choice that is most clear to me is Tuesday night where I will be at Madame Siam to see one of my favorites, SUR, as part of We Found New Music night.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/29-5/5

I (read: I supervised) finally put a shelf up in my kitchen.  Its surface purpose is to hold my mugs, but more importantly, I needed a place to display my Boba Fett boba tea artwork because what’s the point of a kitchen, really, if not to display crossover art that showcases your love of both Star Wars and boba tea?!?

Of course, Avengers: Endgame played a big part of my week. Between that and finally starting season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale, I might be a bit emotionally distraught.  Music helps. Specifically, I’ve been listening to new albums by Patrick Park and Catfish and The Bottlemen on repeat.  I was able to see Patrick Park last week for the first time in a few years and it reminded me that he was the first person I told aloud and in person that I was moving to Los Angeles all those years (10+) ago…

Next week, it’s Dead Sara time! Any opportunity to see one of the best rock bands around must be taken and next week the band plays twice at The Echo!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/22-4/28

Happy Easter (my favorite holiday)! I’ve spent the weekend puppy-sitting which adds even more joy to the holiday.  The incredibly soft bundle of cuteness with the foxlike ears and Tigger bounce called Samosa is helping to reduce my frustrations over having to work over the weekend on a last-minute presentation.  Today also marks the day that I can re-introduce boba (aka happiness) back into my life.  I am now accepting boba dates!

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/15-4/21

I’m in San Diego this weekend spending time with some friends and horses. Saturday was Record Store Day and we celebrated at Vinyl Junkies with Creature and the Woods and a poetry reading from the new book by Noah C Lekas called Saturday Night Sage.  I’d highly recommend the book, but, as with most of my media, I don’t think it could get any better than in live performance.

Show-wise, we have some tasty options this week including several Monday night residency bands I’d like to check out and a charity event Thursday night where New Zealand musicians (including Gin Wigmore!) will take the stage to raise funds those impacted by the terrorist attacks in Christchurch.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 4/8-4/14

This week, I made it out 6/7 nights for shows, all of which got high marks. I guess you could say that my April is off to a good start! Between this week and last, I’ve got over half the rainbow of wristbands riding up my arm from the El Rey alone. In addition to the music, inspired by watching the pilot episode of A Discovery of Witches TV series at WonderCon, I’ve plunged into a re-read of the book series upon which the television show is based.  It is very rare to find a character whose life I connect with so well, but the historian/academic central protagonist is written into a world in which I feel instantly familiar…even with the witches, vampires, and daemons….

While I hope to get in more reading this week, the call of the live show is strong.  I’m particularly eyeing Tuesday night which holds quite a list of musical options including Ben Rector who is headlining at The Theatre at Ace Hotel.  This really is blowing my mind as it feels like it was just yesterday that Ben’s early set at The Hotel Cafe started one of the grandest of my grand musical adventures.

Kristen’s LA Concert Calendar: 3/25-3/31

I have a weird sense of humor. And by that, I mean I don’t find funny the things a lot of other people find funny.  This was the topic of conversation at my department meeting last week.  When asked for an example of something I would laugh at, I busted out a video of Joey Ryan explaining the history of the ampersand in the middle of The Milk Carton Kids show.  I am SO ready to laugh this Monday at Largo as The Milk Carton Kids present the Sad Songs Comedy Hour!  It’s the start of a big week.  Hopefully I’ll be ready. Last week, I had to take some time to rest in order to recover from my SXSW experience.  Speaking of, I found a few words (perhaps a few too many) on that week. Plus, I put together a lovely playlist.  Check it out here.
